From the courier journal on Sept. 30th 1994....
RICHMOND, KY - The football programs at Madison Southern and Whitley County high schools were.put on probation for the remainder of the season, and three players were suspended from last Fridays games because of a fight. The altercation followed Madison Southerns 24-6 victory on Sept. 16th. The previously suspended players, Southern senior Chris Causey and Junior Jared Northern as well as Whitley County's Matthew Stein, are all allowed to play the rest of the regular and post seasons. But the three will remain on probation during that time.
KHSAA commissioner Louis Stout said "I know who started the fight, but after that, it gets a little bit more difficult to pick out the people who were fighting" after he watched gfame film.
Madison Southern beat Betsy Layne Friday while Whitley County defeated Knox Central. "I think the penalties were fair" Madison Southern Principal Jesse Ward said. Ward said Causey sent the KHSAA a letter of apology.
Madison Southern Coach Mike Elkin didn't see the beginning of the incident as he was shaking hands with Whitley County coach Mike Campbell. He said "I expected Causey to be suspended (for his actions) but it was unjust to suspend Northern, he had no business being suspended Elkin said. "All he did was go and break up the fight, we felt like we got the short end of the stick. But were going to live with it. It's their (the KHSAA) job. But all they were judging was the film. They didn't interview a witness or talk to anybody who was there on our end. We felt like it could have been handled more professionally."
Whitley County coach Mike Campbell and Principal Kenneth Powell were not available for comment.

Wow, in today's world the entire teams would have been suspended for the year
nicker:
My how things have changed. It was much better then without the exaggerated suspension and over excitement for little things.

Bring it back to the mountains, Black Bears! You have got to hand it to Coach Creech and his staff for the way they turned their season around!

Who gives a crap about something from 23 years ago. Madison Southern and Harlan Co. have a great opportunity to play in Lexington next week. Talk about that. Its like the other threads that have been on here that last several weeks. Keep it about the current kids playing Friday. Good Luck Black Bears, Good Luck Eagles...

I agree with flyer. Different generation and all the kids have busted their butt so they are talked about. Not their fathers and uncles. By the way , last week was Livingood's 3rd game of year. He missed Collins game, was on field for Garrad and Bourbon games.

Since neither of these teams have a chance of winning the 5A championship, please answer this, would either of them have a chance to win any other class in the state of KY?
11-22-2017, 09:52 PM
If Wayne County wins 4A, I will say yes. Madison Southern played them tough at their place on their senior night. Lost turnover margin, at home or neutral field, would be another tough, hard hitting game that could go either way. I would take Southern in rematch.

That's a very negative and uncalled for comment!

I've seen most all of Wayne's games. This was not a great game by them. According to stats on Riherds, MS had 2 turnovers and Wayne had 3 one producing a Southern TD, so I am not sure the turnover comment is accurate. Good luck against Harlan Co. Good news is Wayne beat them worse. Happy Thanksgiving.

Itâs a great Thanksgiving day to Grannyâs black bears today. One that the good Lord has keep you out of hibernation for at least one more week, hopefully two more weeks. Now go get this win and play for the championship next week and Grannyâs black bears can hibernate until next football season. The second reason is Granny is happy, good luck to Grannyâs Black Bears and pray for a injury free game for both teams.
