Tear Drop Wrote:I was simply telling Central's second string nice job in the apple bowl because they played 3/4 of the game. Heck I went to go get a popcorn and the starters were no where to be seen. I just thought they subs did a nice job showcasing their talent because they don't get to play 3/4 of most games and they did it in a great atmosphere. So take the comment how you want it because I'm not losing sleep either way. Just for the record everyone is lucky Matney does have class. Nice job both teams and good luck on the rest of the season.
And why is that?? What was he going to do if he didn't have class? He might have won by a larger margin, but so what, a loss is a loss, whether by 1 point or 90 points. All Matney had to lose by not showing class was to take a chance on getting one of his key players hurt and cheating his subs out of some valuable playing time which can benefit them later in the season. I don't know if you would call it class, but I think Matney showed that he is a good coach that knows what he is doing. He got the job done and took care of his players for the most part. That is smart. Both coaches last night did what they could with what they had, and we all know the outcome. I don't look for the Eagles to have any trouble until the last two games of the season and the post-season. This is a very good JC team and they have potential to go deep. But be aware that Ashland and Belfry are not Paintsville. In fact, I'd say they will give the Eagles all they want. But JC can beat them and make a good run in the playoffs if they stay focused and healthy. Good luck!!

The little dink and dunk passes worked early for Paintsville. They should have stayed with it and worked the ball down the field that way.

A somewhat good post! Sounds like to me JC's coach showed a lot of class with not keeping the starters in and making it a 99-7 game. And again sounds like Pville is a little ****ed with the outcome. Some are saying 5A playing 1A. Well heck...it's the Apple Bowl... when has any other team played in the bowl?...get over it. Congrats JC.

We never hear 5A versus 1A during basketball, baseball or any other sport. I never heard it prior to JCHS's win streak. Just play the game and lets the results fall where they may. Competition is good for both programs. The money is good for both programs. Some like to complain that athletic programs spend too much money, however games like this and the hard work by many from both programs at the booths during Apple Day goes a long way. Now both teams need to work toward the big picture.

Paintsville said that we are classless with are comments or some trash talking. I agree a few on here may have made some ****** comments. If you were at this game anyone with JCHS anything on there car had a hard time parking because they did not us parking around close. JCHS fans was not allowed to sit in there stands witch was about plum empty. They had people standing at their stand guarding it so we could not sit. That IMO that is classless, and that falls on the school and what their teaching!

So JC fans had to stand up to watch the smack down!!! Sorry..... I just thought that was hilarious. Sometimes I tickle myself..

Personally, I don't see why they don't play the Apple Bowl at JC every year now that they have started opening up the track area. In the past, before the track was open, it was packed and jammed and not any more comfortable than playing at Paintsville. At least there is a place to stand at Paintsville and I usually stand most of the game anyway. But now that they have opened the track area up I personally don't know why they don't just play it at JC every year. In the Apple Bowl I support Paintsville, but it wouldn't bother me to hold it at Central every year. It isn't like the teams would have to travel very far and a football field is football field. It would make for a more enjoyable and comfortable atmosphere for the fans and that and the revenue is the only reason for playing the game anyway.

No offense, but these were my observations:
(1) Parking wasn't to easy for either side.
(2) Both sides stands were pretty full IMO.
(3) There were still empty seats in both sides stands, but most people chose to stand.

I agree with you totally!! However, I would point out that a 5A school should beat a 1A school most of the time in every sport, especially over a long period of time. But 1A schools do beat 5A schools, even in football. Lace em up and play is my opinion!!

LOL there was tons of room on Pville side and not one seat on our side. I am sure if you find a tape you could see it for your self.

Paintsville has some good talent and they play hard.
10-05-2008, 03:53 PM
Just as many have said, Johnson Central's line really dominated this game. Deaton was always being chased by harlow, wolford, and brown. The defensive line of JC was way too powerful for paintsville to handle, and the JC o-line did amazing as well. JC is finally proving that their linemen can equal the ability of those such as Ian Welch, Nate Dillon, and Chase Richardson when it comes to the past years.

First off I think all the adults on here need to stop!!! Most of the kids that played this game are all friends. To them this game is over. I have 3 that played for PHS Thusday night and have spent the entire weekend with JCHS football team. I called one 3 times yesterday and he was at the JCHS sports booth in town. One stayed the night with a JCHS player. So give it a break the kids are all friends all of you get on here and talk your trash and the kids get on myspace and make fun of you. Let just pray they all get to finish this season with no injurys and that both teams bring it back to Johnson County. Let be proud of this county and the great talent and group of young kids we have in it. Let stick together. Our kids do lets lead by their example.

All Apple Day I have watched players from both teams and schools hanging around and staying all night with each other.
The parking was no different this year than any other year at either school. If you don't get there early, you will walk a good piece. Even at JCHS, you might wind up walking a quarter of a mile or so.
Also, all the seats on Paintsvilles side were sold as reserved seating, so if you wore Black and Gold and had a reserved seat there, you would have been able to sit there.
Go to Rupp and see how often they allow youi to sit in a reserved seat without that ticket.

1975 - PHS 19 JCHS 0
Neither team scored in the first half of the game. Paintsville broke the game open in the third quarter by scoring three times. Fred Osborne and Paul David Brown did the damage for the Tigers. Johnson Central was without the services of Rick Adams.
1976 - PHS 26 JCHS 6
B. J. Ward returned the opening kickoff 43 yards to set up the first Paintsville touchdown. Paintsville used a second half touchdown by Ward to roll to the easy win and keep their unbeaten season alive. Bill Branham made the lone touchdown for the Golden Eagles.
1977 - PHS 14 JCHS 6
Paintsville blocked a punt that led to its first touchdown. In the third quarter the Tigers drove the ball 60 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory.
1978 - PHS 35 JCHS 0
Paintsville held Johnson Central to only 40 yards total offense with only 9 yards on the ground. The Tigers rolled up 247 yards of total offense in the game to remain unbeaten on the season. Paintsville's quarterback David Lemaster, now head coach for the Tigers, ran two touchdowns and passed for another in the rout.
1979 - PHS 20 JCHS 0
Don Jarrell set the Apple Bowl rushing record, piling up 198 yards on 22 carries. That record stood for 17 years until Stacey Johnson broke the record in 1996. The Paintsville defense held the Golden Eagles to minus three yards rushing and 30 yards of total offense.
1980 - PHS 19 JCHS 6
The Tigers ran only 24 plays the entire game, scoring three touchdowns. Tony Mayes and Eric Gray each had scores of 56 yards, while Jerry Runyon returned a punt 62 yards for the Tigers' final score. Paintsville compiled 205 yards of total offense for the game.
1981 - PHS 19 JCHS 6
Tony Mayes led the Tigers on offense, rushing for 196 yards on 15 carries. He scored twice on runs of 53 and 27 yards. Hans Doderer scored the only touchdown for the Golden Eagles as the Tigers' defense held them to only 97 yards on the ground.
1982 - PHS 3 JCHS 0
It took overtime to decide the champion of this years' Apple Bowl. Both teams were held scoreless in regulation. Tim Cox kicked the winning field goal in the extra period. Johnson Central had an opportunity to tie but the kick from Darrell Blair hit an upright and was no good.
1984 - PHS 21 JCHS 7
Jeff Baldwin threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers defeated the Golden Eagles. Marty Alger caught a 22-yard pass and Frank Osbourn hauled in a 15-yard strike from Baldwin. Johnson Central got on the board when Jimmy Daniels hit Mo Hall with a 7-yard pass in the end zone.
1986 - PHS 27 JCHS 6
Paintsville decided its best offense was its defense. Paintsville forced two Golden Eagles turnovers that resulted in Tiger touchdowns. The Tigers' defense stifled the Johnson Central offense for the entire contest. After the game Johnson Central coach Ronnie Wells called the Tigers' defense the best team he had seen all year.
1988 - PHS 23 JCHS 20
This was arguably the best Apple Bowl in history as the game was one for the ages. This game could not be settled in regulation. In fact, one overtime was not enough to determine a winner. In the second overtime Tucker Howard kicked a 20-yard field goal for the Tigers in the victory. "It was probably the best two teams that have ever played in the Apple Bowl at one time", said Golden Eagles coach Steve Trimble after the game.
1989 - PHS 13 JCHS 0
Paintsville halfback Greg Slone rushed for 123 yards on 12 carries, including a 36-yard touchdown in the third quarter that put the game on ice. The Tiger defense did not let the Golden Eagles offense get started as the Eagles never threatened the entire contest.
1990 - PHS 15 JCHS 8
The Paintsville quarterback scored both Tigers' touchdowns as Paintsville took the close contest, the first of which was a 48-yard run. A bad snap on a punt set up the Tigers final touchdown. "We needed a break like that," said Coach Walter Brugh. "We have been down the past three weeks and needed a break".
1991 - PHS 27 JCHS 19
This Apple Bowl belonged to Brad Tiller and the Paintsville Tigers. Tiller rushed for 195 yards on 14 carries. "We've seen some good backs this year but Tiller is the best we've seen", said Johnson Central coach Steve Trimble. Tiller scored the first two times he touched the ball on runs of 24 and 76 yards and added a third score late in the contest.
1992 - PHS 14 JCHS 12
Paintsville used a comeback in the third and fourth quarters to win its eighth straight Apple Bowl. Paintsville put together a drive in the fourth quarter that was highlighted by a 37-yard pass from John Holbrook to Brent Hamilton that set up Byron Dixon's 1-yard touchdown run to give Paintsville the victory.
1995 - PHS 16 JCHS 6
Sophomores Mike Burchett and Brock Taylor combined for 233 rushing yards. Burchett pounded out 107 yards on 30 carries, while Taylor added 96 yards on six tries, including a 70-yard TD run. Senior Gary Roe added the other score as PHS coach David Lemaster won his coaching debut in the Apple Bowl
1998 - PHS 27 JCHS 0
Senior quarterback David Castle ran for a two-yard touchdown and threw a touchdown pass to fellow senior Seth Lauffer for the Paintsville Tigers at Memorial Field. Junior safety Parker Diabo intercepted a pass and ran it back 30 yards for another PHS score which preserved the shutout. Johnson Central running backs Josh Banks and Shannon Price had 163 rushing yards but neither could find a path to the end zone.
2001 - JCHS 22 PHS 40
Last season's Apple Bowl featured everything a good rivalry could have. There was passing, running, interceptions, hard hits, and penalties. Twenty-eight penalties were called last season and 62 points were given up in Paintsville's 40-22 win over the Golden Eagles. The score by quarters was Central 13-8 after one, Paintsville 24-13 at the half, Paintsville 32-22 after three quarters and the final, Paintsville 40-22. Tiger duo Chas Harmon and Dustin Hall connected five times for three long touchdown completions and 145 yards through the air in the contest. Harmon went 12 of 16 for 218 yards through the air. Kyle Murphy had 10 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown. Tate Harmon had 52 yards, a touchdown and an interception, while Justin Arms had six tackles and an interception. Johnson Central quarterback Kevin Slone went 4 of 7 for 96 yards through the air, had seven carries for 26 yards and two touchdowns. Brenton Dials had14 carries for 118 yards, one touchdown, tow catches for 52 yards, five tackles and a sock. Phillip Webb had 10 tackles, Garrett Conley had eight tackles and derrick Sublett had seven tackles. Paintsville went on to make the state semifinals last year with their 11-3 finish. They lost to Newport Catholic who lost to Danville 14-13 in the state championship game. Johnson Central went on to win one more game before finishing the year 2-8.
2002 PHS 45 JCHS 30
TIGERS RETAIN THE APPLE BARREL. Paintsville scored forty-five second halftime points, erasing a twelve point halftime deficit to win their 19th Apple Bowl.

It was actually 22-0 I'm pretty sure when that happend. It was supposed to have been a punt, but Ian Welch told me that he seen the Paintsville's D overloaded to the right and saw a seem and just tucked it up. It wasn't actually called, but a choice made by the senior before the snap.

All I can say is congratulations to the TIGERS! They kept their heads high and played the game. I haven't heard anyone quote the difference in numbers of players on each team. (Approximately 138 to 32) And yes, Paintsville is 1A and JC is 5A. When you are playing a contact sport, this must be considered. It has just taken JC a WHILE to build their program. NOW the 2008 Apple Bowl is over maybe JC needs to look into playing more 5A schools.
