Belfry @ Prestonsburg (Aug. 21)
#61
Both teams lost alot of talent but Belfry will still come out on top 28 -7.
#62
I cannot see Prestonsburg giving up over 28 points in this game.

It's going to be a highly competitive game with two inexperienced lines. Belfry doesn't have that standout player this year like years past (Jones, Howard, May, Lee, etc). Varney is good, but he is one of the smaller Belfry backs they've had in quite sometime. Prestonsburg doesn't have that big-time back they usually have. I think this game will be dominated by the defenses. Both defense are quick and swarm to the ball very well. Whichever offense turns the ball over less wins this one IMO.

Belfry has the advantage in the trenches, but I think that Prestonsburg will be able to sustain longer drives as long as they don't make any major mistakes causing a turnover.

Should be the most competitive game we've seen between these two since '04 IMO.

Well... at least someone from Belfry isn't schizophrenic. It seems like the other Pond Creekers make the claim it'll be close only to then make one-sided score predictions.

I would be shocked if Belfry wins this one big.

This Belfry team will be good by Week 9 or 10, but they are going to take some lumps early on. I think truth be told Belfry may ahve a couple TD's advantage, but the fact this game is being played at Pburg has to be taken into account. The Blackcats always bring the pain at home.

Plus, I think Haywood for all intensive purposes will be treating this like a more competitively coached scrimmage. I still expect alot of substitutions for Belfry, a generally conservative gameplan, and a pretty basic defensive scheme.

I would have to agree with you EKU, I think this game will be closer than a lot of the Pirate people think. I think you have the score dead on. I really believe this is the type of game both of these teams need to open with. You have two teams that have some big gaps to fill combined with some really good, talented veterans returning. I think this game could come down to the line play and belfry's ability to get outside. I am pretty sure, based on past Belfry/Pburg games, that DeRossett will load up the box against the run. If Belfry can get to the corners, they will be fine. Also, I believe the ability to play action pass and get a couple of completions could be huge. However, if Belfry is forced to pass more than 6-8 times, it really plays into the hands of Pburg. I think the Blackcats will have some success through the air and I believe a real key will be if Belfry's D can shut down the run. Most of the time, Belfry will focus on really stopping one aspect of the other team figuring that they will make enough plays, in this instance against the pass, to win the game. It really should be a good one. I would be very surprised if this game was a blowout. I can't pick the exact same score as EKU, so I will say 21-13 Pirates.

Like earlier, I belive it will be close, but after the scrimmages this weekend, it appears P-burg may have their offense more evolved than I previously anticipated. So I will go with my heart and say P-burg. If you have a shot to beat Haywood, your better do it early in the season.

cats by a td i think the cats will better than ppl think and im kinda glad u arent givin the cats much of a chance b/c the players they thrive off of the negativity

I'm going with Belfry...they have just the right amount of attitude coming in the new season to make the statement that they are a very good team...no , make that a great team. Good Luck to both teams ...but i say belfry by at least 3 tds.

EKUAlum05 Wrote:Pburg is a large 2A school and Belfry is a small 3A school.... the enrollment difference is minimal and they have frequently played in the same district and class over the years.

Went and took a look. Belfry has 141 more students according to the 08-09 audited school enrollment.

What does that amount to - five extra athletes?

Approximately yes. I say both teams average about a 8-10% ratio of their male student's playing football. Assuming half of those 141 students were male, that is approximately 70 male students. Then if 10% play football you are looking at 7 extra football players spread out through the four individual grade levels. In other words, minimal impact based on enrollment difference.

Prestonsburg only has 27 players currently, so the percentage of kids who play football is much higher at Belfry.

I spoke to Coach Haywood (who I played for many moons ago...) at the scrimmage last Saturday and was lamenting the shortage of players Pburg has this year. He just flashed me that little sideways grin of his and said "You only need 11...".

What is interesting is that baseball and basketball are on an uptick here at Pburg, but the football numbers keep declining.

In spite of all this, if the Cats can stay healthy, they should have a pretty good season.

Only 27 players? Really? That really is shocking, usually Pburg has 27 players on their Freshman Team, let aone total.

I agree, that is disappointing.

I haven't seen Belfry at all this year, I watched Prestonsburg last weekend.

"Only The Dedicated Survive"

Thats a quote from a banner in Prestonsburg's weight room and its so true, because you better believe that the kids that make it through spring & summer are going to give it everything they've got once they step onto that field.

The decrease of numbers isn't a new trend, EKU...it's been going on a long time at many schools. Belfry's getting over the championship hump and having the new stadium has ameliorized that effect for you guys so far.

(I know you got a little carried away, but I've never seen a P-burg Freshman team with 27 players in ANY year...LOL)

The middle school keeps Belfry's numbers flowing pretty good now. Belfry actually has a very small senior class right now and Belfry's best years are ahead of them. From the junior class to the seventh grade class, each class is loaded with talent. Belfry is going to be good every season, we all know that, but they really have an oppotunity to be special in the next couple of seasons.
As for the game, neither team plays well early. Look for a lot of mistakes, but Belfry's depth will play a key roll and Belfry will scratch out a couple touchdown victory.

Depth hasnt exactly been a problem for pburg so far. When they went down to UK to play in the 7v7 tournament, they had 8 players. They went all the way to the semi's against Seneca and barely lost. It takes 11 people to play football, not 40.

Don't get me wrong...the point of what you said is totally correct. Depth is overrated at high school in general, but..... depth matters alot more along the offensive and defensive lines when there is full contact, moreso then when in 7 on 7 with skill guys.

Definitely speaking metaphorically... but, it just shocks me that the number is so low. I know this is a trend not only across KY but nationally, but Pburg's number are nearly half of what they were less than a decade ago.

What would you consider to be the epicenter of this trend? Video games? Soccer's growth? Economy?

Prestonsburg has not shortage of players on either side of the ball with the line.
