Lawrence County Football Coach
lcgrad2002 Wrote:Lawrence County has two solid linebackers returning in Jordan Wellman, and Blake Watson. I loved watching these two play last year, they were all over the field.
I think that may be the best Linebacker tandem in the mountains this year. If the D line can hold they will shine.
lcgrad2002 Wrote:Anyone know of any scrimmage dates/ times for Lawrence County yet?
I know they take on Huntington here at home but not sure about the date. I will find out because my cousin is a player for Huntington high. I think they also take on Russell but don't know the date for that one either. I would also like to know when the date is for the red and black game if it is even scheduled yet.

The Russell game is away I think
Just razzing you a bit. And that isn't a word, but it is... nevermind. Anyway, I know for sure Coach does not read BGR. I know for sure players do.
Like other teens, they are easily swayed and discouraged. Make sure what you say here is fact, is encouragement to those playing and coaching the game and pull hard for your team and you'll be seen as a passionate and classy fan.
My own take on the Bulldogs is this - they will be thinner in depth than recent past. They will be smaller upfront than in recent past. They will be quicker than in recent past.
All this was coming with or without Salmons here and when LC needed someone to take over a team torpedoed by a coaching change and threatening to sink, Cecil stepped up. Glad he did and I would let my boy play for him whether they won games or not.
I agree that this may be one of the best linebacker tandem in the mountains along with the two from Belfry. The defense was pretty good last year despite the record and yards given up, I think the problem was they were on the field way too long. It's hard no matter who you are to be on the field that long and not slip up some. The kids played hard and that's all you can ask for.. I think another kid to look out for at corner is Blake Prince, pound for pound he gives you everything he has every play, love that kid... Is A.J. Cyrus going to be quarterback this year?
Does anyone know if Caleb Bentley is playing or not?
If coach Cecil was an asst. coach under Salmon's then isn't it fairly safe to assume that his coaching style will be similar if not a mirror image of Salmon's style? I would think so. Also,an asst. coach who has devoted his time and energy into a team for some time now (which is more than 99% of the rest of the community) should be given the chance to prove himself without having to worry about those less motivated,in the community, discouraging his players. Now,one can say that "this is a sports talk site and you should be able to talk and discuss whatever you want",but to do that at the expense of the coach and team is beyond me. I wouldn't do that to my team and you'll not find many on this site that would. It would be different if this coach had three or four awful season's without getting any better. But that's not the case here. I don't know coach Cecil and I don't follow LC football but I do wish them the best and hope that they succeed in 2A football.

Lawrence County is 3A

My bad. "3A".

Looks like another tough schedule this year, what does everyone think of the schedule?
I look at the schedule like this.
We have more home games then away this year so that is a plus and all the hard games are home.

#1 Belfry could be even better then last year
#2Pike central from what I hear lost some
#3 Sheldon Clark had problems last year and can only get better
#4 East Ridge??? well east ridge is east ridge lol

Ashland got much better as the season went along but I don't know much about this year
Jackson county??? well a lot like east ridge
Prestonsburg I think will be better last year if we play the whole game like the 3rd qtr we would be in that game
Perry central I think lost a lot but they have a good young coach and staff
Letcher county ??? who knows but I think we should have won that game last year
Raceland it was close last year but I don't know much about

As far as I know AJ is the qb. I loved the last kid at qb but I think AJ will give us a new twist because he can run.
Hayden is a great guy and one thing you can say about him was that he was a proven winner, and a competitor.. I loved watching him grow ever since coming in as a freshman for Chandler Shepherd at home against Belfry. He led a potential game winning drive against the eventual state champ Pirates ( I think) that year. Hayden has dedicated himself to the weight room and this program and he was a leader on and off the field. A.J. is a gifted athlete with not as strong a arm, but more mobile in way and can make plays happen with this feet. Both are great guys.
Ok so I know I have got a lot of flack on here for talking about the head coach so here we go again. I've not said much about this stuff for about a month now and I went to some practice and stuff and now I have a question.
I don't understand why lawrence had no camps or morning practice or 2 a days this year. It is like this staff is doing just enought to field a team and sell some tickets but no more. You would think that in a year where we are as young as I have ever seen that they could use all the extra work they could get. Why do I get the funny fealing that this coach has no plans to be the coach of this team in the future. I don't understand what this staff is doing. If any Bulldog fan on here has any answers to this stuff I would love to hear what you think.

This is what happens when you bring the "good ol boys" back in town to coach!!!
i just feel sorry for the seniors. We got screwed our senior year by the same coaching staff and from what i've heard and seen its not gonna be much better this year. Sorry to say it, but its gonna be a long year for the dawgs.
Coach Cecil is not only a great coach, but a great person as well. People need to give him time and they will see awesome results. He will teach his players a lot more than just football. They will also learn a lot that they can use in other aspects of their lives. He's a class act.
I think Do-double-gg and dawgfather is the same person. They sound the same and like the same teams.
As for the dispute, Coach Cecil has a total different approach when it comes to coaching. He was still learning just like Salmons did his first year. He has low numbers and a great young bunch coming up.

Ya and I bet you are always the guy who looks for morale victories after every loss and always got a trophy for participation! Results are what will keep a coach around. PERIOD!!!
To all the kids at Lawrence County please read this and take notes. Lawrence County has and will always have some idiot posters on this site. A lot of them have a personal agenda. Over the years I've found some posters to be disgruntled mothers that have no idea about football. Ex Convicts that aren't even around the program etc. When you can hide behind a computer it's easy to cut on people's character with no repercussions. It's cowardly but it is what it is.
D O G G for months you've attacked Coach Cecil on here. He works at the Middle School as the Vice Principal and is around the school all the time. Not a hard guy to find if you have so many problems with him. Perhaps you can take your expertise and win it all! For you to come on here and say he might have no interest in coaching anymore or take stabs at his commitment is absolute horse crap! Maybe you should go over to the field on a Sunday while he's cutting the grass with his two daughters running around so they can be around him! That's right Lawrence Co has such little support he has to cut the grass! I've coached beside him. He puts in COUNTLESS hours of film work etc to put together outstanding game plans. He's had opportunities to go countless other places but has instead chosen to stay here and try to help our kids in Lawrence Co. He has a solid reputation in coaching circles so some putz on the internet really doesn't matter outside of the kids getting fed this cancerous attitude. Cecil is not only a great coach but in my 20 years around football I've never been around a man that makes men better people! If you can have that influence on men then you know he has a huge one on kids.
Bulldog4life. You choose to come on here and bash me personally and the "good ol boys". Let me just go ahead and show how stupid you are for the Bulldog kids that are reading this. You've thrown my name out so here's some of my resume:
4 year letterman at LC
Top DB Sr year with school record still in pass breakups
Graduated winningest class in school history at the time
All State Honorable Mention
Played for Billy Goldsmith and Chuke Williams the top 2 winningest coaches in school history.
3 year starter went 11-0 Soph, 3pts from state Jr, 12-2 Sr.
Worked summers for Chuke and came back to coach with him on Fri nights while in college in the late 90's when LC broke Breathitt's 42 win streak and back to the final 4.
Took head middle school coach at North Oldham and played in multiple Mid Bluegrass Conference Championships.
Helped start the new program at North Oldham High School who has been one of the better programs in the state.
In the mean time started the Lawrence County Legend's Youth Football camp from 3 hours away. Was able to pull kids I coached back like Gerad Parker, Jason Michael, Alan Short, Dontae Wright, Mike West etc to work with our youth guys like Blake Bradley, Hunter James and Turner O Brian.
Went to Georgetown camp with Coach McPeek to help LC when Hoss, Dontae, Mike etc played to help LC there.
Moved to Lexington and Coached with guys like Bob Shire and Bill Letton. Bob is one of the top 2 passing coaches in the history of this state. He has been coach of the year in KY and GA. Bob won state in KY and made it to championship in GA. Bill won state in KY and had one of the greatest upsets in KY history when Pburg beat Danville. We all won a state championship coaching together. The 1st one in the history of Lexington Catholic and the 1st in Lexington in 20 years.
I came back and got to coach under Coach Goldsmith who built the Lawrence County program, Coach Salmmons who was the Coach of the year and Coach Cecil is an extremely intelligent football coach and man.
This "good ole boy" has had multiple offers multiple places. I've left my 2 kids at home MANY nights trying to make the program the best we can be even though I'm working multiple jobs. For almost 25 years I've been involved some way with this program.
I passed up 4 times the money and multiple coordinator jobs (just like Coach Cecil has) to try to help the kids in Lawrence County and build this program. When Coach Salmmons left he offered me the Defensive Coordinator job and a lot of cash. I decided to stay one more year with Coach Cecil to try to help keep the program at a high level.
I've also flown to Dallas, Minn driven to Chicago, Notre Dame, Cincy etc to clinics trying to not only coach with the best guys I could coach with but learn from others outside of here to help be the best we can be.
So this "good ole boy" coached with one of the best rushing coaches in the state in Chuke Williams. Coached with another state championship coach in Coach Letton. Coached with and coaching with again the State Coach of The Year in Coach Salmmons. Coached with and won a state championship under maybe the best passing coach in state history and multiple state coach of the year Coach Sphire. Coached with the guy out of all of them that made me a better man and is as intelligent as any of them Coach Cecil. I've been with programs that shut Highlands out at Highlands! Beat Trinity. Lost by a last 2nd FG to St X. Beaten teams like Scott Co, Cov Cath, Lex Christian etc. Coached in NFL camps. Started youth camp in Louisa and gave every penny back to the youth league. Pretty much been involved for 20 years in the LC program.
You're right this "good ole boy" isn't qualified to be coaching at Lawrence Co! There are people all over the place in Louisa that are much more qualified and love the program and kids more. Coach Short sure isn't qualified either. Lets hide and bash him since all he did was lead LC in the late 90's to the final 4 against Highlands. Forget all the huge hits he took great highlights he had and all the games he won. Forget he played QB in college and was a captain! Forget he's coached High School ball before he came here. Forget he's coached COLLEGE football! There are way more qualified people dying to move to Louisa that probably love our program/kids more.
Guess Coach Salmmons didn't think I could coach since for a 2nd year in a row he offered me the farm to come over and help revamp their defense. No trust there since we're preseason #3 in big schools the highest in school history and he has more pressure on him that he's ever had coaching. He's just taking a stab I might know what I'm doing! Ultimately my plan was to go to Paintsville and Coach my nephew until he graduated. Things didn't work out this year but I still hope to have him while I have a chance to be with him. I've turned down money + opportunities before but this time I took it for my family and my 2 kids. My family is in Louisa. I plan to be invested in the program at different levels in the future.
End of the day Lawrence Co has a rich tradition from being a top program in the state in the 90's. They had some outstanding players including some of the best in the history of this state. Multiple D1 kids etc. They had a leader in the Administration that's son is now coaching in the NFL. He LOVED the football program and did everything it needed. When Coach Salmmons went in and asked for 21 things he got ZERO! When Coach Anderson went in to try to work something out he was told good luck in a 15 sec conversation. For all I've done for the program I straight got lied to about being paid and put my family out of a couple of grand but still kept coming back to coach. The two times the job has come open there have been an average of 3 people apply for the football job! The school has been under the gun with the state for multiple years now. There are NO jobs here. This isn't the 90's and the faster people understand that the faster they are going to realize how much time guys like Coach Cecil and Coach Salmmons put in to take care of our youth! We all have different philosophies. That's life. I don't agree with everything either coach has done and they aren't going to agree with everything I have done. The difference is we are men. We go face to face to talk about things and try to get better. If you all LOVE the program so much then go be a man and talk to them. Right now all you are is a cancer to the program. Like it or not our kids get on here and read this crap. They have no idea who it's coming from they just read it. That crappy attitude is contagious and does nothing positive for the program.
For the kids reading this the bottom line is this. You would be shocked at some of the idiots that post on this message board. The majority of the loudest have never played a down of football and have ZERO clue about the sacrifice you all make. If you want to get thumped feel sorry for yourself. Listen to all the neh sayers that try to build excuses of why you will fail or how bad you are going to be etc. If you are a winner you will learn to look at these people like idiots. Like people that are trying to tear down everything you have worked for. You will look at these people like they don't believe in you, your family, our family! You will use the garbage they post that they don't have a clue about and fuel you to be great! You have 2 options. Feel sorry for yourself and get beat or take it all in to piss you off to be great! I hope you choose the 2nd! I know how hard our coaches and kids work. I've lived it. Believe in each other and believe in your coaches. Don't believe in the cowards that hide behind fake names and take shots at good men that sacrifice leaving their families behind to make you better players and even more important down the road men!
I love you guys! Barring something bad happening I'll be there with my family cheering you on Fri night vs Ashland! Leave it all on the field!
Coach Preece
When my older son played for LC under Coach Salmons.. they did not really do 2 a days.. but instead had a very long extended evening practice. They did go to camp, I hope this team will be able to do so in the future. According to Coach Cecil it was because they would not have been able to be in pads at that time.
well said Bulldog42. Some of the biggest whiners on here never even played the game but they are now experts.
As far as two a days go the vast majority of schools do not have them. The state changed the rules a few years ago so most schools do a prolonged one practice per day.

Do you want a cookie??

No one cares about your resume, all you do is brag on what you think was such a great playing career. I mean you are seriously bragging about most pass break ups as if people go around the state talking about the all time pass break ups at LC. Hhahahaahah wow...you were decent in high school back in like the 80s or something and you act like you've done this and that as a coach when half the time your not at practice. If people really knew the little input you have on the game plan. Did you even play in college?? I mean if you were this all state player why didn't you play big time college ball???
:biglmao:
Nice so out of all that you got pass deflections. Forget about winning a state champoinship coaching. Forget about being in 3 final 4's. Forget about shutting Highlands out, beating Trinity etc. Forget about coaching with multiple coach of the year head coaches. Forget about 20 plus years invested in our program. Don't know a thing about football. Never had any input anywhere. That's why Coach Salmmons is bringing me over with his best shot ever to win it all. Same reason Coach Sphire did when he interviewd me. They brought me in because I know nothing and work none hahaha! Don't need a cookie! Confident becasue of the work I've put in and great coaches I've learned from! I post my resume because YOU made the choice to put MY name on here and try to attack me. You try to act like the "good ole boys" have no idea about football. Now the people reading this can see that YOU have very little idea what you are talking about!
Coach Goldsmith didn't build the program in a year. Chuke came in at a great time with multiple college players and some huge bigtime linemen. His system fit great with the type of kids we had. Coach Salmmons didn't win a game his first year. There's nobody that wants LC to win a state championship any more than I do but I am realistic that it takes time to build your program if you do it right through the youth league/middle school etc. You guys are on here just slamming the heck out of the staff and they haven't even played a game yet. LC has had the state breathing down their neck for several years. The state department is in the school every day. The enrollment over an eight year span will go from a 4A school to a 2A school soon. Just get sick of seeing our own people constantly battling our own people who try to help our youth. It's in football. Little league baseball. Little league football etc. If all these negative people would take their energy and actually try to help our youth instead of spreading their canerous attitude we would have a lot better place to live and our sports programs would be in a lot better shape!
Do-double-gg Wrote:I agree with a lot of what all of you say,but I hope he is good enough to keep it intact for now. When is someone who knows this game and knows how to run a team who is good year in and year out going to come. I hear a lot of people say it cant happen in Lawrence county because it's a low population town and low budget but how did coach williams do it. A lot of people who are not from Lawrence county don't know that we were the best team in the mountains in the 90's we had more wins in the mid to late 90's than anyone in the mountains and I think we were like 7'th in state in wins during that period and we went to the state semies like three times. I would like to see someone like coach Ratcliff when he is done with his big time coaching or Jason Michaels when he is done with the NFL or what ever he has in mind to come back home. Or Parker and Wright. That would be great!!!:help:

I love your passion for the program. I think you honestly love LC and want them to be on top. I coached with played for and coached with Chuke. I coached with Salmmons+Cecil. Totally different! Chuke got insane money compared to the money around LC now. He had 100% backing from a guy in charge that has put as much time in for the program as anybody. He had Multiple D1 athletes and massive linemen for the most part.
The reality is Phil Ratcliff is not leaving the opportunity to coach at a new Division 1 football program in UNC Charlotte to coach LC. Jason Michaels is not leaving coaching the San Diego Chargers to Coach LC. Gerad Parker is not leaving Marshall to Coach LC. Dontae Wright is not leaving Centre to Coach LC. I agree they are all great and I love them all to death. Those guys have too big of futures over the next decade to come home.
LC has a tough schedule with a young team. Of course everybody wants to win state. The best thing they can do is build for District games with the young guys they have. Go beat Sheldon Clark + Pike Central then put themselves in a position to win District. They would be a huge underdog vs Belfry but we've won as huge underdogs before. If they can get a home playoff game or two then play Belfry in the playoffs in a win or go home scenario late that would be a successful season right now.
I don't know how we got got to the point in this country where we look to a high school coach to be our kids hero and role model. Parents in this country are so lazy. This is the parents job to teach our kids life lessons and to be better people. A coach has a kid for a few hours a day during the season so I would love to know what life lessons they are teaching the kids. The job of a football coach is to coach football, nothing more nothing less. I don't want my kid learning life lessons from a coach that I don't even know. If I hear one more person say that a coach teaches kids to be men and better people I just might puke. I think some of you have seen movies like remember the titans a few times to many. As long as my kids coach conducts himself in a professional manner and does not use bad language and has the common sense to keep my kid safe I don't care what kind of a person he is. I am also sick of how you judge a person on the job they are doing and people act like you just said the coach is a bad person. I challenge you to find one time in any post where I said he was a bad person or is bad for the kids. I have a job and I get judged on my performance every day by my boss and fellow workers and the customers. This is just a part of life. When a person takes the job of a head coach they know when they take the job that a coach job is in the spotlight more then most. It is a part of the job so if you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen. I hear a lot of people say that he is a great coach and a very football smart person but you never give an example of this. Show me one thing from his coaching past that will show that he is a good coach and I will shut up. And if he has got so many offers from other places then name the places because after you do people on here who are from those places will be on here calling you out. I also hear a lot of people on here talking about the players being on here reading this stuff. I think you don't give the kids enough credit for how smart they are because I know they are smart enough to tell if you are judging the man or judging the job he is doing. I have not had one post on here from someone claiming to be a player who was willing to argue with me about what kind of a football mind he is so if they are on here then they just might think some of the same things I do. Yes that is right in the real world far away from remember the titans land players sometimes don't like the coach either like it or not. I am done posting on this stuff because it is getting old and I am getting ill from all the old football cliches being thrown around. :please:
Do-double-gg Wrote:No I was not the kid on the bench because I did not play football in school and I was never a coach either and I doubt you were either. That is a lot of stuff to claim on here with me not knowing who you even are and all. It is a shame that you cant see that I am not hurting the team by speaking the truth. I will tell you what will hurt a team is going 0-10 and players not showing up and coaches not being with the team when they should. You should read more of the post on here before you talk about things you know nothing about. Are you from Lawrence county because I am. Did you go to school here because I did. Do you live in Louisa because I do. Do you know anything about this coach because I do.
