I'm not from Belfry but I made friends with one of their posters on another high school sports site two years ago when Somerset played them in the semi-finals. Good people and program. The Belfry-Central matchup is turning into one of the best in the state. Congrats on your win.
Which win ? Both of them ?

No, I believe you about your boy. Good luck to him. I hope to watch him play on Sundays. I don't however, believe you made a typo. In the first post you didn't just say you were a two year starter. You made it a whole sentence: "2 year starter in college only played those two years."
I could buy it if you'd only said 2 year starter in college but then you went and added that you only played those two years and spelled out two. Then I gave you a chance to go back and admit that you messed up on your post in this thread when you said you were a 4 year starter and you reiterated that you were a four year starter. So obviously you weren't telling the truth in one of your threads. That is why I asked you more than once.

BELLBOBCATS Wrote:Central is better than Bell, Belfry or any other school in 3A. This year(along with the other years) show just that again. Central plays a much tougher schedule that gets them ready for the playoffs. The coaching staff at Central is far above the coaching staffs at all the other 3A schools, Bell for sure included, with the exception of Belfry....I think the coaching staff at Belfry is a close 2nd.
A rivalry does mean that most teams win against the other...not be beaten year in and year out by Central. What we have with Belfry and Bell is this "we almost won." That's not a rivalry.
Step it up a notch with scheduling and the off season preparations and maybe we can one day beat Central.
i dont agree with the coaching part,if haywood had those athletes and all that speed year in and yr out, Belfry would have won those 4 titles, thats what won this games more than anything is the speed...

I hadn't thought about it but both games. I root for UL and all of the other in state schools when they aren't playing EKU or UK.
As for you? I don't know you, so I really couldn't say. I'm just not sure why you felt the need to crow about all you've done unless you're insecure. I did find it interesting that you went from playing two years of college to starting for four over the span of a year. Seems like you get better every year like Reno Hightower....

What's Central got coming back? Of course I know Francis and Styles but what else?
For Belfry, Warren returns (congrats to him on 1000 yards passing, that's uncommon at Belfry. 12 TD-2 INT) along with Taylor, Carr, and hopefully Johnson. Austin Hatfield also returns, and can only get better. Could be a pretty potent offensive attack for Belfry if we get the lineman in place.

Because he's playing for UL and I'm assuming he's from Kentucky. Even if he isn't it helps UL and UK when they send their players on to the NFL. He also must have a passion for the sport to reach the level that he has and I like to see anyone that cares that much about something succeed at it. Good luck to y'all.

So I am have found closure on this game and thouh it stings to see Belfry come up just short once again, it is time to close the book on a fantastic 2012 season and look forward to 2013.
First and foremost this edition of Belfry is one of the favorite squads I have followed all-time. They overcame adversity and injuries and improved dramatically from the Henry Clay game when questions abound about if they had what it took to even get past the Regional Finals. This departing Senior class is the first squad to ever reach 3 State Finals, and they will forver be associated as the blue collar group.
LB's Ghormley and Messer had nearly 1000 combined tackles in their career. Think about that for a moment. Neither will be known as the fastest, biggets, or most athletic LB...but they brought their lunch pale every week and was the heart of one of the best Pirate defenses I could remember.
Tony Messer is what Belfry football is all about. This guy could have been a stat stuffing monster on other teams on either side of the ball. Instead he played within the system and played as unselfish as possible while acting as a leader and mentor for the young Pirates to look up to. His physicality and ability to make the clutch play will be sorely missed.
Zack Thacker and Josh Robinson were th consumate "other guys" their entire career. Thacker was always the CB teams tried to pick on. He had his fair share of hard lessons that came from this, but as we saw yesterday he grew from that and became a damn fine CB. Robinson, like Messer, is the guy who does the small things. He didn't see much action on offense, but he was the glue guy who did the small things such as blocking and making the tough catch. On defense Robinson became the silent assasin in the secondary Belfry could depend on to make a big play.
The place Belfry will be hit the hardest though is on the O-line. Jude, Willis, Taylor, and May came together to become one of the toughest Belfry OL's of all time. Pirate fans will always remember the absolute domination they put on Breathitt County and Bourbon County in the playoff run, where they left little doubt as to what the Pirate's fate would hold.
I know I am forgetting others, but to all the Seniors, on behalf of the Pond Creek Nation...we are proud of you and thank you for your tireless efforts to take the program to the next level.
Belfry is going to be very talented at the skill positions next season.... in terms of shear skill level this may be the largest return of playmakers I can remember aside from 2004... but that means nothing if they don't put in the effort to get stronger and faster and work on their timing so that ankle tackle or shoestring tackle that stopped them this season does not do so next year. For those young men with the dubious task of having to become the next crop of Pirate Linemen or Linebackers... your shoes to fill are large.
I hope Justin Johnson is able to return for his Senior season, and am excited to see what the future holds.

Central has Scroggins coming back. He has built Central into a monster. Their talent was down slightly this year but they found ways to win. That is a reflection on the coach.
12-01-2012, 04:17 PM
As for the whole Bell/Belfry debate.
I'll play the hypothetical game your fanbase loves to play.
Let's flip the script and move Belfry to Bell's spot in their district, and vice versa.
Does Bell advance out of the East and reach Bowling Green?
Probably so... Bell would have presented the same mis-matches Belfry did to Bourbon and Breathitt. Although I think the Breathitt score would be a bit closer as I dn't think the Bobcats were nearly as stout as the Pirates at the LB position which means Trent probably has a better game.
Does Belfry lose in the Regional Finals to Central?
They haven't defeated them yet, no reason to assume they would.
BUT, the hypocricy of some of your fans is astounding. If we flip this script Belfry is hosting Central in the Regional Finals at CAM Stadium. Belfry has a healthy Justin Johnson and a Trenity Carr at 100%. Belfry also gets Central without Tayshaun Gibbs the week immediately following his concussion when Central had to change their offense. Bell fans sang to the mountainside the ONLY reason Belfry played Central closer last year was due to an injury to a key player. Subsequently Belfry played Central as tough, if not tougher, with Central having one more key player than the Bell game, and Belfry without their top HB. What's good for the goose has to be good for the ander now, right boys?
With all that said, let me make it very clear that I don't think by any means that this is an excuse for Belfry's loss. As good as Johnson is, I think the outcome yesterday is the exact same... as it would be if Gibbs did not play a down vs. Belfry. Both teams had the depth to overcome the losses as great programs on the Championship level should. With those defenses yesterday and the way they were prepared, I don't think any program in 3A would have put up more points then what we saw scored.
I know this all comes back to Bell's inherant need to be recognized as the mythical "King of the Mountains", as I said earlier this year it is all hypotheticals ecause these teams don't play. Just like the arguement that Bell was the best team because no other mountain team had defeated them (despite never playing Belfry during that run), it is just as much of a reach to assume Belfry would "own" Bell County as Catdaddy said. What I do know is Belfry has won the big games and playoff match-ups in front of them, and subsequently equated themselves as worthy competition to the clear top dog in 3A football to earn the right to consistently be considered the team to expect to be playing on Week 15. In an era of blowouts and mis-matches in the State Finals the Belfry/Central matchup has became the only game people expect to see a high level of football skill, execution, and general nail biting drama.I could care less where Belfry is ranked in the WYMT Mountain Top 10... as long as the Pirates have the big trophy on the line in the 4th Quarter of the Finals I will take that every day.

^ The bolded is what it all boils down to next year for Belfry. I hope I am wrong, but I think they just lose too many quality bigs (DE/LB/OLINE) to be as good as they were this season.
When someone starts a Belfry 2013 thread, I'll give more thoughts.

In three of those games, you are one play from having Belfry 3 and 1 against Central.
In 2007, the last play of the first half was a horrible play call by Haywood (maybe the worst ever in his hall of fame career) which resulted in Belfry being down at halftime instead of up. The rest of the way, neither team could really do anything until it was panic time for Belfry.
2011 Central just made a great drive and play which at this level could just as easily been missed.
2012 was a missed extra point and then a missed pitch on your second chance at life.
This series could easily be flip flopped or tied, would love to see this game in the Pike County Bowl next year. Myself, I love good old fashion hard hitting defensive struggle.

As for the game: IMO, two evenly matched squads with great defenses. Both coaches played it pretty conservatively, particularly Scroggins IMO. He knew he had the advantage in special teams and trusted his defense. I "think" Central could have had some success with quick screens to #1.
Played very much like an LSU/BAMA game. Both defenses were top notch.
Congrats to Central on another title. As for Belfry, you made your community proud.

points has belfry missed in the last 3 years, and would how you kicked a fr.in that game.

So speed is a great deal to do with it, but imo coaching is more to it......that way your offense and defense works like a well oiled machine like Central.

No. Central has the coaching staff and players that can play with anyone. Which goes back to coaching.....while Bell and Belfry plays a semi tough schedule (and thats up to debate also) which doesn't get them ready for a state championship type game, Central doesn't care to play someone that may beat them.

I don't care for the so-called "King of the Mountain" crap. Until you actually play ALL the teams in the mountains then its not even worth mentioning. :insane:

I disagree..Belfry will see a group this good very soon. That 8th grade group coming up IMO will be a powerhouse by the time the kids are juniors and seniors. Maybe sooner.

BELLBOBCATS Wrote:That has some good points and some points that are totally insane. Ok, if we flipped and put Belfry out west and Bell in the east. We can if and but till this time next year and it don't matter.....Central is state champs again. If you'd flip it to where, like you said, would it have made a difference? No. Central has the coaching staff and players that can play with anyone. Which goes back to coaching.....while Bell and Belfry plays a semi tough schedule (and thats up to debate also) which doesn't get them ready for a state championship type game, Central doesn't care to play someone that may beat them.

You did not say which part is insane. You just echoed what I said from what I am seeing?

Just curious, but since Bell only lost to Central by 4, does that make them better this year?
nicker: We heard it all last year of Belfry getting beat by a closer score.
