Western High School's storybook season came to a close Friday night with a 20-16 loss to undefeated Allen County-Scottsville in the Class 4-A state football semifinals.
The host Warriors led the Patriots 16-14 with about seven minutes remaining. But Allen County's powerful running game couldn't be stopped when the game mattered most. Senior tailback Brandon Boards capped the Patriots' 14-play, 73-yard game-winning drive with a 2-yard touchdown with 1:52 to go.
On Western's next series, Armon Langford got his hands on a long pass across the middle from Craig Williams on fourth-and-18. But Langford was leveled, and the ball was jarred loose before he landed.
"I can't explain it right now. I'm numb from the toes up," Patriots coach Brad Hood said. "We wore them out physically at the end. We're just as proud as we can be."
Allen County -- which lost its only game last season in the regional final -- will meet Boyle County (14-0), a 25-21 winner over Bell County, in next Friday's state final in Bowling Green.
"I had to hold onto the ball and gain yards and help my team win or the season was going to be over," Boards said. "All the hard work since my class were freshmen is really paying off."
Western (10-4) will hurt for a while, but coach LaVell Boyd said the Warriors will be back next year. He said only eight significant contributors will graduate from Western's most successful team ever.
"We're very proud of them," Boyd said. "The best thing is we have everybody coming back next year. We'll learn from this and next year be a better team."
The Patriots finished with 268 yards of offense, all on the ground. They tried just one pass. Boards rushed 30 times for 175 yards and two scores.
"He is a baller. He is one heck of a football player. I saw that as early as his sophomore year," Hood said. "We were going to feed him, feed him, feed him."
With less than a minute to go before halftime, Allen County punter Thaxton Spears went low to catch a bad snap on a bounce, and his knee touched the ground at the 4-yard line, giving the ball to Western at that spot.
Jacorey Ritchie -- who finished with 62 yards on 18 carries -- was stopped one yard short of the goal line, so the Warriors rushed to line up and committed a false start with four seconds left. Western had to settle for Miguel Fernandez's 23-yard field goal and a 9-7 lead.
Allen County used the first eight minutes of the third quarter on a 13-play, 72-yard drive to take a 14-9 lead. Western needed just 72 seconds to take the lead back thanks to Ken'yon Young's 53-yard TD run, his second score of the game. Young finished with 93 yards on eight carries.

To recap:
Western Bigger? Yeah.
Western Stronger? Not even almost. The totals don't lie, 243 yards rushing by ACS to 151 by the Warriors. And that's including a -11 "rush" on the punting mishap.
Western had a very good team and it was a very good game. Western only losing 8 seniors makes them a very scary team next year. But as I expected, the Patriots move on with their best team in school history. The next task may prove too tall, but they have just about maximized what they could accomplish.

8 seniors doesn't seem like a lot until you see there are only 40 kids on the entire roster. They lose their best player in Ritchie who is one of those 8 seniors.

I am a part of those eight senior for Western.Trust me the Warriors will be back.

Cavery, if you are truely part of the team, my hats off to you. you guys played a very tough game last night. Your #66 was hurt and still played at least the next 4 plays. Thats heart. My only question is where was your community or school support. I was very disappointed with the turnout of your fans. We brought 2000+ and we are 2 hours away. You deserve better from your fans. Keep your heads up and good luck in whatever you do after school.

Most Louisville schools have small crowds at their football games. This year, Western, Fern Creek, and Fairdale brought small crowds 30 miles east to Shelbyville.

For some reason in Louisville when it get cold nobody really like coming out to watch football. They rather be inside watching Basketball.

I cant understand how a western team being that big and fast one game from the state championship with no fans that team was playing for each other and there coaches the town should be ashamed.
