Alonzo Brock scored his fourth touchdown of the game in overtime and then Henry Gallusser recovered a fumble at the 1-yard line to lead Butler High School’s football team past Henderson County 31-24 Friday night to win the Class 6-A, Region One championship. The Bears (11-2) play host to top-ranked and undefeated Trinity next week in the state semifinals.
Brock, a senior running back, gained 97 yards on 16 carries and scored on runs of 3, 4, 2 and 10 yards. The last one, along with Aaron Miles’ extra-point kick, gave the Bears a 31-24 lead in overtime. Henderson County then took over and reached the 1-yard line on its first possession. After a penalty put the Colonels (9-4) back to the 6, they reached the 1 again on second down. Quarterback Hunter Comer tried to sneak it in from there but fumbled and Gallusser, a senior linebacker, fell on it.
Henderson County got an excellent game from Rushad Whitlock, who scored on a 7-yard run and a 96-yard kickoff return.

HENDERSON, Ky. — Bruising running back Alonzo Brock scored four touchdowns in the second half, including one in overtime, to give Butler a 31-24 overtime come-from-behind win over Henderson County in Friday’s 6-A regional championship game.
The Colonels (9-4) ended their season with an overtime loss in the regional finals for the second straight year after falling at Male 14-7 last year.
Brock, a 5-foot-11, 191-pound fullback in the Bears’ power I offense, scored all four touchdowns for Butler which fell behind 17-3.
“When he gets going straight ahead, he is hard to handle,” said coach Scott Carmony, who guided Butler to its first regional championship since 1993.
Brock, who had just two carries for 6 yards in the first half, finished with 119 yards on 18 carries as he broke tackles and often carried a pile of defenders. “He decided he wanted to will his way to a win,” Henderson County coach Clay Clevenger said.
Brock had the game-winning touchdown on the first play of overtime on a 10-yard run. Henderson County tried to answer, twice reaching the 1. The Colonels were pushed back to the 6 by an illegal procedure penalty. After a 5-yard by Keileen Chappell to get the ball back to the 1, Hunter Comer fumbled on the quarterback sneak on third down and Butler’s Cameron Palmer to end the game.
“It looked like we allowed some penetration, and a helmet hit right on the ball,” Clevenger said.
Leading 10-3 at the half, the Colonels opened the second half with a 94-yard kickoff return by Rushad Whitlock, who was nearly downed three or four times on the run back but broke free for the score.
“After kickoff return, I was hoping to make them go to their passing game,” Clevenger said.
Instead, the Bears pounded away with its ground game. Brock had a 27-yard gain on the 63-yard drive and scored on a 4-yard run to cut the lead to 17-10.
“They decided at half that they need to go right after us with the run. They stuck with it. You have to give them credit for that,” Clevenger said.
“We told the team at halftime to keep battling. That we were going to get our chances. Then we give up the kickoff return and I wonder if they’re even listening to me,” Carmony said. “To our credit, we did keep battling.”
Butler tied the game 17 with 6:13 left in regulation after taking over on downs at their own 48. Brock ran the ball four of fives plays on the drive and scored from 4 yards out. Whitlock fumbled the ensuing kickoff, one of three fumbles lost by the Colonels, and Butler recovered at the Henderson County 5. Brock scored on third down from the 2 to give the Bears a 24-17 lead with 5:02 to play.
Recalling two turnovers and punt return for a touchdown that was called back by a holding penalty in the first half, Carmony said the fumble recovery helped turn the tide for his team. “Finally we got a break,” he said.
Henderson County did answer with a 73-yard scoring drive that included a pair of third-down passes by Comer — one a 54-yarder to Whitlock. Comer scored the game-tying touchdown on a 1-yard sneak with 2:33 to play. The teams traded fumbles after that and sent the game to overtime.
Butler scored on the game’s opening drive, which stalled at the 10, and settled for a 32-yard field goal by Aaron Miles.
Henderson County answered with a 65-yard drive that was sparked by a 24-yard third-down reception by Robert Hennigan from Comer. Comer scored on a quarterback sneak from 1-yard out with 1:30 left in the first quarter.
Butler turned the ball over twice in the second quarter and ran just four offensive plays. Jamal Hill intercepted Jacob Morgan at the Colonel 15 early in the period. Henderson County drove the ball 45 yards but had to punt from the Bears 48. However, Butler’s Joseph Brown fumbled the punt return which was recovered at the 9 by Brennan Farley. The Colonels moved the ball to the 4, but Nick Gregory kicked a 21-yard field goal with 1:39 left in the half to increase the lead to 10-3.
Henderson County totaled 255 yards of offense. Chappell had 81 rushing yards on 20 carries, while Whitlock rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries. Comer completed 4-of-7 pass attempts for 91 yards.
Butler had 226 yards on offense with 119 coming from Brock. Morgan was 6-of-15 for 71 yards.
Butler (11-2) will host Trinity in next week’s state semifinals. Trinity beat St. Xavier 42-6 on Friday.
