Bourbon County did that to a lot of teams on their run that season.

Here are some more I thought of:
1976 Harrodsburg. Lost to Frankfort in the Regional. Henry Parks & Venus Meaux (UK for both), and Gus Parks (EKU). Nick Yeast (EKU) broke his leg early in the year if memory serves and missed the season.
1977 Corbin. Lost in the final to Mayfield (14-13) after beating the Cardinals the year before (6-0). Mayfield was in the middle of a great stretch of talented teams but that Corbin team was rock solid with a huge line on both sides of the ball and talent with strength in the backfield. Can't remember all their names right now but Steve Bird was a junior in the backfield.
Those were some older teams I thought of for conversation.

The only way LC would have won any game after the mudbowl robbery is if they could have taken their refs with them.Breathitt should have 3 peated that year.

I agree completely. The 97' Breathitt team blew out everybody they played that year.(including Bryan Station 40-0 and Lafayette 49-6) I was at the Breathitt/Lawrence game, Breathitt lead 28-6 at the half. Newport lead Lawrence by the exact same score the week before.( while Breathitt beat Mason 56-0)

Yes they did, I believe they beat Boyle and Lex Cath in their playoff run, both beat Bourbon regular season. The weather that year was rainy every Friday night until the regional final.

The 98 Danville team who got the real good running back trasfer from Warren East that year, Jeremy Britt. Lost in the finals. IMO would have to top the list.

Cumberland High School (92-95)- Man they had so much speed and talent for a Class "A" school in those years. I believe some of those great Pikeville teams beat them.
Rock- The two state finals teams.
Middlesboro 97- They won the state in 98, but I believe the 97 team was better.

Those Rock teams were good but they had the misfortune of playing Boyle. Boyle could have been the third best team in the state any class those years.( with the exception of Trinity and Male)

FWIW, it must have been 22-6 at half or so. The final score of that game was: Lawrence County 28 Newport 22.

Middlesboro was handled pretty well by Beechwood in '97 (34-13). Not sure they can lay a claim to being better than the '98 squad.

Lawrence Co. rally beats Newport (E N Q U I R E R S P O R T S C O V E R A G E)
Saturday, November 15, 1997
Newport (6-6) could do no wrong early, scoring the game's first three TDs and taking a 22-8 halftime lead. The Wildcats went up 14-0 after senior running back Dickie Witherspoon broke free on a third-and-short for a 55-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.
Lawrence County scored 28 unanswered points to hand Newport a 28-22 loss in the Class AA regional semifinals at Lawrence County.
I knew it was something like that.

Im going to say Leslie Co. 2005 team... They were loaded that yr. and several ppl had them picked to win state.. Im not going to get into why they lost because I feel as if they were several reasons.. Sheldon Clark upset the eagles in the second round that yr by one pt.

2010 JC lost highlands 20-14 in a dogfight what a game.............

It was either the 91 or 92 Evarts team that went undefeated in the regular season while beating corbin, beating pikeville in the playoffs and then losing to Bellevue in the semifinals in a very controversial game as told by people around my area. That team had mr football and current knox central coach Scott Russell whom broke the state rushing record at that time. I cant remember who coached that team

Breathitt in 97 I think. The only thing that slowed them down was a muddy field in Louisa and a Lawrence County team that was more suited for those conditions.

Montgomery coutny 1987 the best team we may have ever had. I would also say our 1996 team both teams lost one game short of a state championship. The teams we lost to both years went on to win state.

1999 was tragic.
Panthers should have won that one. I think there was something like a minuete left in the game? Pikeville had Beechwood defeated, then an interception, and the Tigers ran out the clock.

I have always heard here that the Paintsville team from 1978 was the best team not to win. Something crazy happened in the fourth that kept them from winning vs. Fort Campbell? I think? Help :please:

The 1983 Highlands Bluebirds. They were state champs and undefeated in 1982 and I think they were undefeated going into the playoffs in 1983. In the playoff game with Conner, the teams played on a field that was knee deep in mud and neither team could do anything. Miles from Conner was fast and able to break away for the only score of the game if I remember correctely. Conner went on to win the Championship that year.

2010 Johnson Central eagles. A chance to win inside the 20 yard line and just ran out of time. The definately would have scorred if they could have continued to run the ball but without any timeouts they had to resort to the pass. Highlands would have went down at the Eagles nest and a state title would have came home to Johnson County.

What class was Montgomery County in those years?

As good of a team as Johnson Central had that year, I think a squad that lost two games in the regular season can't be considered in this conversation IMO.

Are you certain they played Bellvue in the Semi-finals? I don't think Bellevue has been in the finals since the 70's.

I remember Danville played Conner in the playoffs and they were a very nice squad. HHS has had more than a few great teams that lost that one crucial game that kept them from going on in the playoffs. But they've won a lot more than they've lost.

A lot of the older folks around here claim that 77 Corbin team was much better than the other teams of that era that one state championships, such as the year befoe and in 82 i think.
That 77 team was loaded with talent, but there were some major things happen that year.
