Actually even the final Mount Top 10 doesn't mean anything. If I'm not mistaken Hazard was not the number one team in the final poll but they were the only Mountain Team to win a State Championship last season. But since there are no games for another 2 1/2 weeks what are we supposed to talk about? It is listed as a preseason poll, if you don't like preseason polls don't read the thread.

I know - it's a masterpiece isn't it?
but I can guarantee you that it will be shattered after the second week (if not the first)

Not to take anything away from Hazard...
that program always strives for greatness and they were rewarded last year...
but I can guarantee you that if the dawgs played Bell County or the Black Bears it wouldn't have been pretty.
The mountain top-10 is a very subjective list because of the class system and Hazard usually gets a lot of love because they are top 2 or 3 in the state in 1A - a few years ago they beat 3 5A teams in one season (Clay, Perry, Letcher)...
so I think that love is deserved for the most part, but I would have a hard time putting Hazard at the top of the list when the overwhelming consensus is that they simply couldn't go the distance with a truly elite team in the mountains.

Couldnt agree more.
I try to beat this through the head of people when we do our rankings each week.
WYMT ignores the class system and goes solely off wins and losses instead of looking at a team and guessing at who would beat who. This is why you see years when a good Bell County or Belfry team get beat by somebody by Lex Cath they'll slip behind and undefeated Hazard, knowing there is no possible way some of those schools cold beat Lex Cath either or hold there on against a Bell or Belfry and others.
The "Mountain Top 10" for more or less is a pretty record list than anything, which is fie because there seem to be a lot of people that love it, however, in now way does it hardly ever list a true top ten. If that was the case you would rarely see 1A or 2A teams other than the Hazards or Somersets in the list.

I don't think he was trying to make a point that Hazard should have been #1.

I just don't see Whitley and Corbin in the top 10. At least not preseason. I don't think Knox will be either.

I don't have to read his mind smart guy. He was talking about how final polls don't matter and used Hazard as an example of how your final game is what defines your team, not the final poll. We beat Hazard at Hazard, I'm pretty sure Norm would not be making a case for them as the #1 team in the mountains last season.

I wasn't trying to elude anyone. I'm getting too old to run away..... However, what I was alluding to was that none of the Mountain Top Ten polls mean anything in the grand scheme of things. All they do is give fans something to talk about. I used Hazard as an example because I don't think anyone would have them as the best team in the mountains last season but in the end they were the only one to take home the big trophy.

do bell and belfry play every year?

No.
They never play.
The only time tthey would even meet is in the state championship.

Rock and Knox will be very similar and should have a really close game and in all honesty, Wburg has a chance to be better than the spot i gave them.
Wburg will compete with Hazard this year.

The list that he posted did not have Somerset in it. I would think that they should be in there over Corbin or Prestonsburg and probably Rockcastle.

I would much rather have a state title than be the number one team in the final Mountain Top 10 and not win a state title. State Championship >>> #1 in Mountain Top 10

Mountain Top Ten:
1. Belfry
2. Bell County
3. Harlan County
4. Breathitt County
5. Johnson Central
6. Hazard
7. Rockcastle County
8. Somerset
9. Whitley County
10. Prestonsburg
I base mine soley on the fact i think the team above each would beat the one below it.

Kenton Adams, BB Bradley, Spencer Childress, the Thomason boys, Clark Rowe (injured much of the last season), Zach Reams, Chris Luna and Ben Lake were the players Rockcastle County lost this past season to graduation.
So of the 11 graduates, about 5 of those really hurt. Lake is virtually irreplaceable, Bradley has a great motor that will tough to replace and I could say something about each player but the idea is the loss will not be as grand as imagined.
There are some VERY good Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors that are going to step up. Every player brings their own element that makes them different so I cannot say that a player can be 'replaced' by anyone else. However, Rock has at least two good RB's to play, there is still a Lake on the team and remember, the QB will only be a Junior!
I will not predict another 9-win season, and I will not predict for them to win their District again. They will be a solid good team and they will certainly be young and/or inexperienced but they will get better as the year goes on.
Russell County will be a dominant team with a chance to make some noise in the playoffs. If it wasn't for that, I would certainly give Rock or Knox a chance to win district.
There are probably 12 legit top-10 teams, it is hard to classify them all.

I may even make a trip out to the rock this year.

I called Rock right last year, and this year im going to say a third place finish in the district behind knox and russell.
IMO, Russell has the best chance to win that district.

^If he plays, I can buy the chance at Knox being 2nd, without him, I don't see it. The Lakers are a CLEAR #1 in that district. Everyone comes into the season playing for #2.
I do not say that to slight the Tigers, Rockets or Panthers, I say that to state the fact that, on a talent basis, Russell County could compete for a State Semi-Final.
