20 Best Programs of the last 20 Years
#1
EKUAlum05 inspired me to create this thread.

I wanted to create this thread because posting in this requires some knowledge of high school football and some history or it. It also separates truly great programs from flashes in the pan. We can have GREAT debates here too.

Great list. I might place Danville higher. In the last 20 years they are state champs in AA in '91,'92 and '94 and in Class A in '00, '01 and '03. They were runners-up in '98 and '04 and '06. Add to that the '93 team that may have been the best of them all but lost by a point to P'burg in the semi-finals and I think they are above Mayfield (who lost to Danville a lot of these years when they shared a class), Ft Campbell, Bowling Green and even Belfry. (based on titles IMO) I could even submit them as a better program than Central based on the entire 20 years. (Central's reign of terror has been limited to the last 5 or so)

Actually I need to re-do mine. I thought it was the Top 20 of the past ten years. Otherwise I totally agree, Danville is definitely on the short list over the past 2 decades, Beechwood will get a bump up too and my beloved Pirates have to take a trip down as they had some dark years in the 90's.

I would venture to say that the best team not in the Top 20 would be Rockcastle County. They were 191-59 over the 90's and 2000's for a 76% win percentage. In the 90's Rock was 93-26 for a 78% win percentage and in the 2000's they were 98-33 for a 75% win percentage. Two State Runner-ups, and at least 4-5 State Semi-Finals appearances, maybe 5-6 Regional Titles. Winning an average seasonal record of 9-3 or 10-3 (9.5/2.97, you choose to round however you please, lol)

However, there are two major knocks on Rock being in my Top 20. The #1 glaring weakness is no titles. The games is played to be the best, if you cannot say that even one time you were the best, it is hard to defend your case.

However, to defend that I will say this: Who has been a better NFL team over the last 10 years, Tampa Bay or San Diego? Without a doubt we would probably say San Diego because they have consistently been a 10-12 win playoff team, but no ring, Tampa Bay has been very up-and-down and mostly down recently BUT 10 years ago, they won the Super Bowl.

That point all comes down to how important the ring is. Would you trade consistently great performance for that shining moment or vice-versa? I tend to fall somewhere in the middle, maybe you do too, fans are often split when it comes to decisions like these.

The other knock on Rock is that they had a 2 season rough patch where they had a tie record at 6-6 and then had the first losing season in what I would guess was 20 years or more.

If we were making a Mountains list, they would EASILY be in the Top 5-10, but State-wide, it is tough to make the case for me, and I am an alumnus.

LWC, ROCK football has accomplished the following from 1990-2011:
*204-69 overall record
*108-24 home record
*9 District Championships (91,92,95,97,00-02,06,11)
*8 District Runner-Ups (93,94,96,98,99,03,04,07)
*4 Region Championships (00-02,05)
*4 Region Runner-Ups (91,92,99,06)
*4 State Semi-Finals (00-02,05)
*over 30 Bowl victories (20-1 in their RV Jamboree Bowl since 1991)

Im just suprised only a few recognized ROCK on the list!

Mayfield at 14, 15. or 16 is ridiculous somewhere in the top ten but no lower than that.

Jack Lambert Wrote:How could you put Danville ahead of Boyle county?Boyle county has owned Danville the last 17 years.

Boyle started their run around 98. Before that they were nothing. If it was last 10 I would have them ahead of Danville. And honestly Danvilles long history of excellence puts them ahead in my opinion. But Boyle is definitely on top now. Like any list these are very subjective and will vary from opinion to opinion.

Boyle's run really started in '96.

That was the first year they defeated Danville since '79. They advanced to the AA semi-finals and lost to eventual champ Breathitt 12-7. The Rebels went unbeaten in the regular season but were upset in the 2nd round of the playoffs the next year.

Since '92 (the 20 years this encompasses), Boyle has a 12-10 record vs. Danville (10-3 in last 13), 7 State Titles, 1 Runner-up. 6 unbeaten seasons.

Danville has 4 state titles and 2 runners-up spots in the same time frame. 1 unbeaten season ('94). Boyle defeated the Ads in the other 2 state title seasons.

do the math and your opinion becomes flawed.

Boyle Co beat a very good Middlesboro team in 1999 too.

Like I said. Danvilles longer history of excellence probably swayed me. I know it says 20 years but I can't help but give Danville credit for the bigger picture.

Is that flawed? Probably. But it's my opinion.
#26
Boyle should be a clear winner over Danville for the mere size alone, 1A vs 3A-4A. If you have that many more people to put on a team, you would figure...... Big Grin
Now I will sit back with my popcorn and watch the chaos ensue Wink

With a mindset of a statistical/mathematical approach was taken to the task of listing;
20 Best KY HS Football Programs over the last 20 years (1992-2011).

First, a list of teams that played in the state championships was used as a starting point. There are 60 high schools that have had a team in the state finals in those 20 years. The following teams have been in the finals at least six times during that time, when teams are tied, they are listed them in alphabetical order (the number championship that they won during the last 20 years are in parenthesis): Highlands 13 (11), Trinity 13 (10), Beechwood 12 (9), Mayfield 9 (4), St. Xavier 9 (6), Boyle County 8 (7), Danville 8 (5) , Newport Central Catholic 7 (3), Bowling Green 6 (2) and Male 5 (3).

Second, the KHSAA.org website was used to obtain the team records for each of the last 20 years. This was used to calculate their total number of wins, their winning percentage and the number of winning seasons during that timeframe. While doing this, several other schools were added to the list. These were teams, such as Henderson County and Ashland Blazer, with high winning percentages that had not been in a state championship game during those 20 years.

Once this was done, several lists were calculated:

Most Wins
1. Highlands
2. Beechwood
3. Trinity
4. St. Xavier
5. Mayfield
6. Bowling Green
7. Danville
8. Boyle County
9. Bell County

11. Breathitt County
12. Belfry
13. Newport Central Catholic
14. Hazard
15. Rockcastle County
16. Russell

Most Winning Seasons

14. Rockcastle County
15. Hazard
16. Russell
17. Newport Central Catholic

Obviously just don't like Boyle. Even has Bell on top of Boyle. Which is fine, it's your opinion, but you make no secret you don't like them.
