D IT UP Wrote:What has Ashland accomplished in the that time period since Matney has left Sheldon Clark. A 6-7 playoff record? That's not quite elite status for a school that's the premier program in Eastern, KY. Hell, you might not even be the premier program in a 20 minute radius, let alone within EKY. Belfry has had that on wraps for a few years now. The Ashland relevance of the past, no longer stands. Get up with the times.
I will start this off by saying I truly respect the belfry players, fans, and program. However they have only beaten Ashland 3 times I do believe and never at Putnam stadium. So I don't know how you can say belfry has that on wraps when both Ashland and Johnson Central have consistently beat them over the last 6-7 years.

I think this kid has a bright future regardless of where he finishes his career and Ashland should be proud of their current success as well as their rich football history, but some of these comments are head scratchers.
"premiere football team in EKY"???
Best team to lose in the second round of the playoffs year in year out maybe. Also why talk down to a Sheldon Clark fan? I have no dog in this fight but a friend of mine used to coach there and I was told they have a lifetime record of 3-2 against the premiere football team in EKY. They have also made it further in the playoffs in recent years all be it against smaller competition.

I dont buy the we made it farther into the playoffs argument . It's easier for schools in other classes to say Ashland chokes in the playoffs every year knowing they themselves will not play a school the caliber of highlands or cov cath and if they do it won't be until the state championship not the second and 3rd round. And yes Jim Matney had a good record vs Ashland but if you look at the two programs success against common oppenents the last decade it is clear to me its Ashland,JC,Belfry an everyone else

Considering since Matney arrived at JC Ashland has a record of 2-6 vs JC and an impressive 2007 season of 2-8 I would think that it is JC, Belfry and everyone else with the Kittens included.

I'll throw Russell in ahead of everyone else too.

I would agree with Russell. They are like the model of consistency.

Yes once again Jim matter is a good football coach any program would be lucky to have. But historically before matney JC was nowhere near Ashland level year in and year out. Now yes the last 7 or 8 years the eagles have been very good. But it was only a couple if years ago they got there first win against belfry a program Ashland has had consistent success against. So while the eagles have had a great run with no sign of it ending they haven't exactly forced Ashland into irrelevance as you pertained in your previous post when you lumped the "TOMCATS" in with everyone else.

What happened to this Baker kid, this thread seems to have made a left turn somewhere. As for Quin, he will be @ Ashland till he graduates. As for Ashland's place in the eastern part of the state, I'm sure we all know who the Tomcats are and in the end that should be enough. Belfry and their fans state their respect for this program, as do the Johnson Central faithfull. Quinton will get plenty of attention no matter where he plays, he is that good. If you don't already know this then feel free to come out and watch him on any friday night. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Couldn't have said it better myself. However the debating has gotten quite fun.

I'm obviously a Boyd County faithfull, but I fully intend on going to both GW and Ironton. Ashland's offense this year is nearly perfect for him.

Yeah both of those games will be truly entertaining. And your right he fits in perfect with all the other skill guys Ashland has.

Not sure what any of this has to do with this thread but, Q has been with us since the beginning. Except for last half of year in seventh an first half of 8th. I'm good friends with his parents an the whole time he was there they were talking about his freshman year at Ashland for just the purpose of more exposure than BC I'm sure its not as much as the University's in northern an western parts of the state they are very content at Ashland an Al has dealt with these things before with his own football career which took him to the NFL for a short time. I THINK HES IN GOOD HANDS. MOM AN DADS!

I think Quinton is a good running back. Is he a great one? Too early to tell. I don't think he will be the next Juan Thomas but then again who am I to say. I say just let the kid play pressure free from all the media hype and let him do his thing. I know Russell has a freshman back that could have done as much damage to LC behind that Ashland line.

I don't think it is fair to say that Ashland chokes in the playoffs. The reason they always lose by the second game is because they are always playing a much superior team from northern Kentucky. Other than Johnson Central, Ashland's district has nothing but annual weaklings. I know Ashland must play its district foes but it certainly doesn't help them get ready for the CovCaths and the FTHs (and occasionally another school or two) from up our way. When that happens, the Ashland season ends in what is usually a blowout.

Ashland like anyone else has to play their district, but their nondistrict schedule ain' a cakewalk. George Washington, Belfry, Ironton, Russell to name a few. These may not be HHS caliber, but they can play football non the less. Of those nondistrict teams only GW beat them last year and only by4 points. If you're looking for some Eastern Ky or Mountain team to consecutively compete with Highlands, Then I'm sorry to disapoint you, but it ain't gonna happen.

Compared to the schedule of highlands and cov cath that schedule is weak. None of those teams would compare to lasalle,Cincinnati elder,or Boyle county. The problem is travel its a lot easier for the NKY schools to play tough competition cause it's in there back yard. For Ashland to play that type of schedule it would require 3-4 hours of travel. So you figure 3 busses a game with travel, gas, and bus driver pay that gets pretty expensive.

Excellent analysis of the situation. Ashland is just stuck in an area where high school football is, at best, no better than average.

You have hit the nail on the head my friend. Ashland will realistically only ply 4-5 teams on its level this year those being belfry,gw,Ironton,JC,and possibly Russell(not to sure how good the devils are I believe they will be better than most think). But none of those teams are the Caliber of FTH or Cov Cath with maybe the exception of GW. So as we have all stated it comes down to an administrations decision, money or championships? I would imagine hosting an extra playoff game or two every year would negate the travel cost somewhat. So it doesn't make sense why Ashland doesn't schedule these programs. Ashland was once one of the premier programs in the state regardless of class. So if it happened once before it can happen again. But we are not going to get there by playing teams like Lawrence or Raceland.

For a freshman playing his first game at tank he acquitted himself better than most. Idk of to many freshman that have had that succes against an Ironton

The sky is the limit for this young man and I am not sure if this has ever happened, but I would think he has a great shot at being named the All Area Player of the Year that is awarded each year by the local newspaper. The coaches have to vote on it, and I know they like to reward upper classmen, but if Ashland continues to have a great year and he continues to be one of if not the key contributor, then I say let the best player win.

If that's the case it would go to Cade OBryan or Shannon Justice.

The Baker boy has a fine pedigree. His father was outstanding at Trigg County. However, I would caution you boys to not put too much pressure on him. He is only a ninth grader.
Ive been saying this for awhile but we got a glimpse of #3 Jeremy Jackson against RC he is by far the best runner on the team an the fastest. He was sidelined in the ironton game for discipline reasons late for practice couple times that week. I believe he will be in full force Friday. An will take a load off bakers back. He hits the hole at full speed an is just wicked fast.

Hopefully over these next few games coaches limit his touches to keep him fresh for the playoffs.
