ouch, congrats to the jumpers

Somerset got their offense going tonight and the Jumper defense was unbreakable as expected. Special teams needs some work but other than that the Jumpers were clicking on all cylinders tonight. Good news for SW, that is probably the toughest defense they will see all regular season. Statement win for Somerset.

Could of been worse.

Jumpers looked like a different team from the one seen last week...well the offense looked different, defense looked the same.

BriarJumpers had close to 300 yards passing, nearly 150 yards rushing and over 100 yards on returns. D held Southwestern to around 150 yards with 40 of that on first drive and about 40 yards with the clock running very late in the game.

I knew this was coming.
SW is not the SW of last year.
SW is not the SW of last year.

Sw is not the Sw of any year to be honest. They I'm sorry to say for the kids are bad.

Anyone have the early line on the point spread for next year's Don Marshall Bowl?
Hope the advance ticket sales are stellar!

Great game for the Briar Jumper defense again tonight. Southwestern got a few first downs on their opening drive but was almost completely shut down until Somerset subbed late in the game. The Somerset offense seemed to get going after the opening series. Somerset does have a few things to work on: they have got to cut out the personal foul and or unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. They gave Southwestern 2 first downs tonight because of them--that will get you beat in a close game. Besides those kind of penalties are selfish... And pointless. Also the punt and extra point units were really bad. There were at least 3 bad snaps tonight and a couple of bad kicks. It seemed better in the second half when they changed longsnappers and put Austin Hill in at kicker. Those are also things that can get you beat in a close game. All in all a dominant performance and a big improvement from the opener. Now they have the off week to work on smoothing out the rough spots.

What was the Southwestern coaching staff thinking with that defensive scheme? They pressed all the receivers and put everyone else in the box with no safety. Why on earth would you do that against a team that has as much of a speed advantage against you as Somerset does--along with a tight end like Williams? It may very well have been the dumbest defensive gameplan that I have ever seen. It looked like a peewee league defensive lineup--just play everyone within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. If Somerset hadn't missed a few open receivers the running clock would have come before halftime.

Cong: to Will Lang (Off. Player of Game) and Tyson Williams (Def. Player of Game). This Team is getting better everyday. Glad the Somerset Fans got to see Williams bring the Wood tonight. He fits in well. Go Jumpers!!!!

I wish Somerset was in this years DM bowl so we would know who would win between Somerset and Pulaski.
Great win by Somerset. Straiten out the special teams and you could make it to carpet.

Umm that's the youth football coaching scheme the the new dc has brought in. They did the same against LCC only LcC didn't take advantage of it, truthfully that game shouldn't of been close either given that fact. I'm okay with coach Stephens but his asst coaches are barely youth league capable. Sorry to be harsh but it's truth. Hopefully Sw can get it together by district time.

Jumpers looked good. SW defense was horrendous. Most of the sweeps and runs that resulted in Tds literally were untouched the entire length of the field. What a break out game for Will Lange.

The offensive scheme was only marginally better than the defensive scheme but we knew what kind of an offense he ran beforehand. I've not seen a defensive gameplan that bad since Hal Mumme was at UK.

I wish both Class 5A county schools could finally stop trying to measure themselves against their Class 2A "big brothers," too. But agreed; I won't be getting my wish any time soon, either.
Nothing wrong with chasing that dream, though.
48-2. Ouch.

Thanks for that one, Norm (not). I just had a really vivid and unsettling Mike Major flashback, lol.

pretty sad the staff cant put kids in a position to be successful. but dont be too hard on the coaches, this is the last year of the contracts on these games. they will probably be more successful when they can schedule the cumberland, clinton, adair, mccreary cent, and casey counties of the world (hope i didn't offend our fine superintendant with that last one). should be able to stay around the .500 mark and then he can continue his career of mediocrity. good luck to the kids, and shame on the administration for creating this mess

Andy was handed a good team last year and the kids also rallied for themselves. This year, well this is an Andy Stephens coached team. This is all he ever has been or ever will be. What was there, 35-40 kids over there? This program is falling apart guickly.

Not since Jackson County came to the Patch and single-covered John Cole have I seen such blatant and appalling defensive ineptitude.
I'm certainly not even implying that this is the case, but IF EVER a principal or athletic director in this freaking town had even the slightest clue about football whatsoever, the Warriors would have a new defensive coordinator by Monday morning.
But we all know that ain't happening. And despite last night's beat-down, the Jumpers still have their own ADministrative issues.

It's just one loss, guys. Last year, SW started 1-3 and went on to win region. Let's just give the coaches some time to find out what works and what doesn't work.
08-25-2012, 04:57 PM
sw will win 3to 4 games, with that bunch of asst
08-25-2012, 09:55 PM
SW showed some ability last night, they had a couple of drives where they moved the ball for a few first downs. Smiddy did a pretty good job running in space when he had space to run in. I'm not saying that Somerset is "All That" but that was probably one of the best defenses Southwestern will face this year. If SW can develop a mid range passing game to get some guys out of the box, I think they will be OK on offense. At least enough to score and give themselves a chance to win.
Defensively...well I don't know...they made Somerset look like the New England Patriots on offense. Defense has a LOOOOONG way to go. Not sure if it's a scheme issue or a personnel issue but the Warriors D needs immediate help.
