I'll second this prediction...see this one being tight with not very many points scored.

Garrard is physical. Not the speed they had last year but they are solid.
I honestly feel that Garrard and Russell were the only teams that had a chance of knocking Bourbon off in the region.

I decided to watch the first matchup between these two teams, as well as the other couple games each team had on ihigh. Here's my unbiased taked on both teams:
Garrard County:
+ Abney is a very, very solid HS QB. He throws a pretty ball, plays very smart, and runs the offense well. I sort of feel bad for him as they simply don't have the weapons for him to throw to.
+ The Caudill kid is easily the best skill player GC has outside of Abney. He plays with a great motor, finishes runs, and has nice hands. To be honest I think he is their biggest threat in both the running and passing game, but he is so crucial as a blocking back he doesn't get as many carries as he probably deserves.
+ By and large GC is a very well coached and solid defensive football team. They tackle well in the box, the LB's flow well, and the DL does a great job of creating penetration. They are quite adept in a physical setting.
+ Caudill and Lyon would be welcome additions to practically anyone's defense. Two very, very solid defensive football players.
+- I know GC has a veteran Oline, but to be honest I was expecting more from them. They showed flashes of being solid and giving a strong surge for the running game, but at other points they seemingly gave free pass to defenders. Pass blocking was spotty as well.
- I'll just be blunt. Garrard simply doesn't have anyone at the skill poisitions in the same hemisphere of talent that they had with Hayes, Wilson, and McCoy. W large illiams is a capable HB and hits the hole hard, but he doesn't have the speed and/or power to break tackles and get to the second level.
- Where Garrard is hit the hardest is at the WR position. Hayes was dangerous in space, but McCoy was downright lethal in the open field. The WR's struggled to get separation and simply did not have the athleticism to "scare" defenses into honoring their passing game. Between spotty pass blocking and WR's unable to create separation, Abney's talents are wasted and it usually involves either him scramling for his life or an abandoment of the passing game.
BOURBON
+ There is noone in the Eastern 3A Semi-State with the athleticism at the skill positions that Bourbon posesses. Everyone knows Hopkins is on the short list for the best RB's in the state, but Johnson and Hilander are dangerous.
+ The biggest surprise to me was Pope at QB. I haven't heard much about this kid but he is more than capable as a passer, very mobile and can create with his feet, and he has the prototype size you want out of your QB to run the spread.
+ Bourbon does a great job of using their short passing game to attack the edge and their OL is quite agile and does a good job of getting into the open field to allow their studs to turn a short gain into a big one.
+ I was pleasantly surprised with Bourbon's defense LB's and DB's. They are quick and get to the ball in a hurry.
- I was expecting to see more of a single back set from under center with Hopkins doing his damage between the tackles. I was actually surprised to see the spread and that the Bourbon line wasn't verly impressive in terms of run blocking. Hopkins gains a lot of yards by getting outside and making people miss on his own.
- Garrard and Paris could not expose it, but my instincts tell me that a power running team with athletic backs could present trouble for Bourbon. Their DL is average at best and do not play with a lot of leverage. It seems they mainly fill space enough to let the LB's and DB's come up in run support and finish the play.

As for the game:
- Bourbon is built for the big play and gaining yards in big chunks, they are not built for 12 or more play drives with numerous 3rd Down conversions. Garrard by and large does a very good job of forcing teams to drive on them. There are yards to be gained every down on Garrard, but they are fundamentally sound and well coached enough to keep everything in front of them. Even still, Bourbon did pop a couple of those big plays in the first game.
- Conversely, Garrard is the polar opposite. They simply don't have the home run threats to break big gains. They are better equipped to grind long drives on the ground, mixing in some short passes, and eating up the clock. By doing so they limit posessions,,, help ensure they have a chance late in the game,,, and rely on their defense to hold serve and eventually frustrate you into a turnover.
- The overwhelming sense I got watching the first game was Bourbon was CLEARLY the more dangerous and "better" team. They had more sustained success on offense, and I never really viewed Garrard as a threat to consistently threaten them with their offense. With that said, it seemed Garrard "irritated" Bourbon all night. Bourbon's offense couldn't get free for the long gains they are known for, plays that typically resulted in a missed tackle and a big chunk were being stopped for no gain, and Bourbon was constantly facing 3rd and 4th and 3 or 4 to go. With the clock rolling, and Bourbon's offense seeing probably half the posessions they are used to, the Golden Lions were firmly hanging around until late.
- For Garrard to win...they have to copy the earlier performance and do what they do best and keep it close so they have a chance. With all due respect to the Williams kid, Caudill has to be used more in the offense to attack the Bourbon front as he is the only back that consistently shows ability to get yards after contact. Garrard needs to find enough success passing to keep the Colonels LB's and DB's honest. I'd like to see some roll outs where they drag a receiver with him for like a 4 or 5 yard gain, this will help account for the pass blocking issues and Abney is more than athletic enough to make the throw off the run. With all this said, GC will need turnovers and tackles for loss to really have a chance of shutting Bourbon down.
- For Bourbon to win, they have simply got to play within themselves and execute offensively. Take what GC gives them and force GC to focus inside the tackle box, then pick their spots to attack the edges or let Hopkins bounce it outside. Use their short passing game to move the sticks. I think you may see BC operate at a quicker pace to counter shortening the game. Defensively, BC simply needs to avoid beating themselves; Good fundamental tackling, keeping contain, and playing smart penalty free football. Garrard may move the ball some and eat the clock, but as long as Bourbon keeps it simple the Golden Lions will struggle to put up more than a couple scores at most.

I think the golden lion statue better get ready for some action! Everyone wants to take a picture with that sucka! Colonels by 3 scores in a hard fought game!
I also nominate Tony Sosby for athletic director of the year! An amazing, sensational, tear jerking job he has done this year for the Colonels!

I have been thinking... Will Garrard come out swinging or stay on the ground like they did last game? Thought Scenters had a wonderful game plan.
Also, will I have to my kids and screechs' ears from one ofthe Garrard County coaches who drops bad words on a regular basis? I think he said one bad word 10 times in a 15 word sentence the last game vs. Bourbon and everyone heard him. I think there is no room for that in high school athletics. We never did that at Bayside High.

If Bourbon Co wins can they have the golden lion statue? It would be radical, like the time Jessie got addicted to caffine pills. The Colonels I hear really want that statue!

if garrards defense stays solid..they shud get the "W"..2 defense players didnt play in ther last game, #12 one of the top defnese players, and #61 who plays a key role in many games

I made the long windy trip to Lancaster in early October! AC got a little carsick but that's ok, it was worth the trip! It was a great game my Garrard Co. friends! When I did touch the lion he roared with excitement! It was like the time Screech won the beauty contest against Kelly and Jessie. You could hear it all the way back to Plum Lick the pleasure he exhaulted. I loved the lion! But I do think he would look adorable at Adena Springs Field!
