Very lucky to win. I guess this team is to good to rotate any other players in. Mitch Redden came in for two plays, he was the only kid on either side of the line to rotate in. Russell has more players than the ones that started that can play. I don't understand this staff
#5
Russell dominated time of possession and yardage and most of this game but almost lost because of stupid penalties and having to settle for field goals.

Redden needs to see some time at offensive tackle.

The defensive lone was solid

Kenton Boggs, Byrd and that Skylar kid are good players. Greenup has much more toughness to them this year.
#6
congrats to Russell
#7
Nick Conley was selected player of the game for Russell. Byrd was selected as player of the game for Greenup.
#8
I wasnt too unhappy with the Devils performance tonight. I thought they controlled the game with the defence playing very good. Just gotta find a way to get it in the end zone but that will come as we are very young. O line play must improve. GC showed some toughness and is much better than last year

#80, right d tackle was blown completely off the ball every time it came to his side. He 6' 205 going against a kid that out weighed him 50lbs or more. This will happen all year. Redden is 6'2 255. I think he could shore up that side a little better. Ironton has two tackles that will out weigh #80 100lbs. Russell needs to beef up the line when and where they can
#10
Nick would be who I would have chose as well followed by maybe....Soucy? He will be our Mr consistent.
#11
Mitch isn't 255lbs. And # 80 is stronger and faster. They do need to sub more and use the beef that they have.

I'll agree with you about that. But once they see it on film I think you will see Redden and some others get there chance. I'd say after game 3 you will see very few seniors on the field.

I thought smith and Jenkins played very well on the defensive line.

Linebacker play to me was disappointing.
#13
Russell's Nick Conley had 68 yards rushing and Greenup's Byrd had 116 yards rushing. The radio station for Russell said Greenup had more total yards rushing and passing but not by much.
#14
I thought smith and Jenkins did a good job. I thought they were getting winded and that's when TV picked up some momentum. Russell has at least 4 kids, 3 sophs and a jr that could have been rotated in to keep everyone fresh. I don't understand this staffs thinking, just letting young talent stand by and watch
#15
Byrd had two long runs that accounted for a good chunk of Greenups offense. It suprises me that they had more yards as Russell had the ball for what seemed to be 2/3 of the game.
#16
Russell did have more yards.

But you can't keep having 8 minute drives that end in field goals.
#17
Is Russell that bad or is Greenup Co. that much better? I think its a combination of both and that spells disaster for the devils with their schedule moving forward!!
#18
Greenup County's run defense is pretty solid. Their pass defense is a work in progress for sure, at times it was awful last night then at times pretty decent on coverage. They had their chance after a great drive in just a couple minutes to end the half that fell just short of a TD and ended up going into the locker room down 6-0. This team has tons more grit than the past two though, it's like night and day. And your also looking a sophomore and junior dominated team especially at the skill positions.

Jeffrey Williams this year is a shell of what he has been with his shoulder issue. He was in for a couple plays and did run the short TD but he is nothing like the player he was. With sophomores Byrd and Hunt developing at rb and qb and juniors Lawson running the ball and TE Cochran having a big diving reception on the scoring drive, they have younger kids developing. They will be fine and will win a couple this year. It's just hard to recover from the depths this program was at.

I think Russell will be fine this year too. They have good size up front and are young also. They will be a lot better as the season progresses. Last night was pretty much an endurance test in the humidity with lots of cramping and there were a lot of gassed kids out there in a grind it out game. Someone posted that this game would be a test of wills and that's exactly what we got.
#19
A little of both but not disastrous.

Ironton is down as well and may even be younger than Russell. The putty tats haven't exactly stopped anybody yet. After that Boyd and the district. If this year is rock bottom we are still looking pretty good.
#20
I agree with Steelermatt. Greenup County is a much grittier team this year. Really shouldn't have lost to Lewis County.

Both these teams will improve as the year goes and should be pretty strong over the next few years.

JV game 10am Monday for those who would like to watch round 2 of Fridays gritty game.
#22
Sounds like Greenup has improved since last year, I know the score was closer than it should have been but the fact that Greenup has stayed close in their first 2 games means they may find themselves winning a game soon down the road. (vs. Boyd maybe????) Congrats to Russell on the win!
#23
greenup co . has a solid defence ,,and offence, you have kids like byrd and boggs who never come off field , they play every snap ,in the backfield ,and linebacker ,you have your veterans out ther like cochern who is a team leader..hunt who is a great qb yes he is young but he plays like a seasoned pro .. so what i'm saying is don't count us out just yet were just getting started......

What field....

@ Greenup
#26
thanks i thought so just was not sure
#27
Hopefully we can see little more scoring on Russells part
#28
I think Russell needs to get faster in spots. I would put Korzep and Conley at LBs instead of safety. Arnold could move up and rotate in on the defensive line to keep guys fresh. Honestly I could see he and Sammy Smith splitting time at NG.

Offensively Van Deren would go to gaurd. Mitch
Redden and Timmy Hammond would get a look at offensive tackles. May could be one end and I would have an open tryout for the other end.
#29
Just throwing it out there. Shouldn't that have been a penalty when Korzep fair catches then ran. I can only assume he signaled a fair catch. Wasn't looking till after he was already running.
