Brent Holman - Bourbon Co.
#1
Bourbon gets very little Pub. (outside of me) on this site, but I just thought it was worth mentioning the season this kid is having.

Going in to week 10 ....

1200 yds rushing on 91 attempts (13.1 ypc) and 21 rushing TDs.

172 yds receiving on 9 catches (19.1 ypr) and 5 rcv touchdowns.

I know Bourbon's competition has been less than average, but for a kid that only plays about a half of football per game, these are pretty remarkable stats.
#2
Bourbon is very good. I think Belfry will find that out very soon.
#3
Wow. Nice stats for this young man.
#4
Awesome stats HSF! 13.1 yards a carry is ridiculous.

Hey now...I am always willing to chat up some BoCo with ya when you start threads

Hey "The Rock" isn't that what they said last year as well?

Maybe so...but you had a good running back last year to...only time will tell...i hope it is a good game...but we both gotta make it to there...we been playing like crap lately but hopefully we get all cylinders goin
#8
I dont even remember last year. I do know Bourbon beat the pee out of Breathitt and Breathitt is a pretty good team. Not a powerhouse but pretty good.
#9
Belfry shut down Hopkins last year, but that was a defense that was very stout against the run all season. This years version of the Pirate defense gets gashed by the run pretty consistently.

I am not so sure Bourbon is the favorite, but I think the two teams are much more even than last season.
#10
I agree both teams have to make it there and if so should be a great game. Rumors still flying around quarterback will be back by then.....
#11
Forgot what thread was even about.....Holman-I have seen this kid run, hard to bring down!

This is true...

Maybe I should have said there are very few Bourbon Co. fans on this site to start the actual threads!

HSF, how is Dalton Pope doing?

You nailed it on the head, Bourbon had a highly touted and very gifted runningback last year, but a very subpar line. Holman is not better than Hopkins overall, but runs much harder and finds his hole full speed. The line is much better this year making the holes a little easier to find.

With Pope, I truly thought Bourbon had a chance at state with a very dynamic offense and more than capable defense. This game would have been the game of the year in 3a football IMO.

Without Pope, Bourbon is very one dimensional and will need its defense to keep them in the game with the Belfry's of the world as they are a big play team, and those big plays will be very limited against higher quality opponents.

It depends on who you ask....

I know he is in a boot and walking without crutches. The original diagnosis was 4-6 weeks (which he seems to be on schedule with) putting him back for the second round of playoffs at the latest.

I also know that he has committed to play baseball at Morehead St. and that there is a good chance no matter how well he heals or when he can come back he will not play football. A decision I completely understand.

Some say he is will play, some say he won't, and i'd say we probably won't know until Week two of the playoffs.

Barring both Belfry and Bourbon make it to the Semi's ... and any unforeseen calamity.. I should be able to come back to watch the Semi-Finals. I am hoping Pope is back..think Bourbon/Belfry could be an instant classic this year with the two teams' offenses.

Holman is a heck of an athlete and a really good football player. Did he even play much offense last year behind Hopkins? I heard he was mostly a defensive player last year and now he is carrying the load both ways.

Rushing

Jersey Player Games Rushes Yards Touchdowns
27 Duncan, Jonathon 6 7 30 0
9 Edmonds, Jordan 6 18 72 0
3 Holman, Brent 9 91 1198 21
15 Pope, Dalton 6 26 273 8
4 Hill, Marquaze 7 39 456 7
13 Lucky, Trevor 8 12 44 1
2 Johnson, Charles 9 18 307 4
7 Thomas, Chandler 9 9 -33 0
48 Ishmael, Tyler 9 2 -1 0
12 Cox, Houston 8 2 8 0
1 Roberts, Terrell 8 1 4 0

Holman on Offense is the primary go to based on Rushing stats; without
Pope receiving has dropped off. But, the main key is the OLine. They are
much better than last year.

As for defense, Holman makes his presence known. He has 53 Tackles. But
I think Dakota Mitchell is much more impressive on the defensive side. He has
86 Tackles. He has quick penetration and does a very good job reading the
play. Also, the Dline as improved and is doing an excellent job sealing the
holes, attacking and collapsing on the ball behind the line of scrimmage.
#19
Yeah, I remember hearing Mitchell's name called quite a bit when I saw them. Looks like a kid with a good motor
#20
Last year he saw very little offense. This year he is offense and linebacker on defense. Most of bourbon players have to play both sides of the ball which I think is a huge disadvantage when you play teams like belfry that are big strong and few players go both ways.

Belfry only has 3.5 guys who start both ways.

QB/CB Sani Warren- Who did the same last year

SE/CB Keaton Taylor

On the Line:

FB/DE Austin Hatfield- Belfry typically keeps him fresh on offense since Carr and Fletcher can each play FB

OT/NG Michael Barnes- Barnes typically plays 50% of the snaps on defense and against a spread team like Bourbon would probably only be used in short yardage situations and wouldn't even be considered a starter
#22
Boco defense is a lot better then people are giving them, up until pope got hurt the D was only playing half a game for the first six weeks or so. Now that the D been the whole game BOCO only gave up 6pt. belfry will have a hard time scoring the ball and a hard time stoping BOCO if pope is back
#23
I hope Pope is back so wecan have a great game between two very good football teams.
#24
Ok i'll say it, Bourbon wont make it to belfrey, mason co will beat em in a close one

They have a fast defense, good at sealing the edge, but teams like mason and belfrey are big teams who can run it right at you, bourbon is a good team, but i think they are a level below teams like belfre, central, PT, and wayne co
#26
I disagree, I have seen Bourbon play. When healthy they are clearly the best team in 3A hands down

Maybe Mason has vastly improved from last year, but this is the same Bourbon team that beat them by 42 last year at Mason in what would be the same game. The only difference is last year they were sophomores and Juniors, this year they are Juniors and Seniors.

Now I believe Mason is probably a better team than last year, but Bourbon only lost 2 starters off that team, and IMO is much more sound all the way around than last years team who struggled with a few teams they shouldn't have in the regular season.

You clearly havent watched much football this year. Bourbon is very good...but to say "they are clearly the best team in 3A hands down".....is a definite overstatement. Until a 3A TEAM BEATS LOU CENTRAL...there's simply no equal....let alone...a better team.

The delta has closed form last year as I think Mason had more room for development. Once you play at a high level it is much tougher to improve.

With that said, even though Mason is a better team and it will be a closer game..I still consider Bourbon a substantial favorite

I kind of agree with what you're saying, but to that I will say this year's Bourbon team is better than last year's Bourbon team, and IMO is right there with last year's Belfry team. So while I think they played at a high level last year, I think they are at an even higher level this year.

People can say Bourbon hasn't played a soul, but they have hung a running clock on every opponent they have played, and have only been at home 3 times this year. Had Bourbon gone out and scheduled a JC caliber team it would have better prepared them for a rematch, but I don't think it would have made them any better or worse than they are right now. If Pope gets back for Belfry I believe Bourbon will shock some people.
