We had an opportunity to put up 70 or 80 and I wish we would have. But, we at least got the running clock by halftime.

Running clock early in 2nd quarter, no need to put up 70. Get starters out with no injuries, put in younger kids for great experience to keep the talent going next year! When HHS has all starters in on D, the are very good and O is scary good (first and second string RB's did not even play tonight).

Highlands is remarkable to watch. They are simply that good.

FORT THOMAS â Ashlandâs football season began in August in northern Campbell County.
It ended there Friday.
Six-time Class 4A state champion Highlands overwhelmed the Tomcats, 56-6, in a second-round running-clock game at David Cecil Memorial Stadium behind senior quarterback Drew Houlistonâs 238 passing yards and five touchdown passes.
Ashland finished at 8-4 in Tony Loveâs first season. For Ashlandâs seniors, last night was the end of high school football â and time to savor memories despite the tears smearing the eye black.
For quarterback Tyler Rose, there was the the 42-20 win over Ironton on Sept. 20 â he couldn't help but remember his mother, the late Jessica Broughton, who passed away in 2006 when Tyler was 11. He also praised his grandfather, Mike Broughton.
âIt was her birthday,â Rose said. â... (Mr. Broughton) raised me to be the man I am.â
Rose didnât play last year and didnât consider playing this season until Love talked to him about it last spring.
âTyler came to me, and he asked about coming out for football,â Love said. âI said, âHey, Iâve got more important things to do than hold a grudge against a kid. If you think you can help us, the doorâs open, come on.ââ
Senior center Andrew Burgess played through lots of pain. He partially tore his medial collateral ligament in his right knee against Sheldon Clark.
âI just love my team, I loved just being a part of it,â Burgess said. â... I hate it that itâs over now.â
There was this from senior lineman Chris Kitchen: âIt was a great season ⦠We fought hard to get here, we didnât give up, and we stayed together at all times.â
Ashland was playing somewhat shorthanded before it left Boyd County. Leading rusher Quinton Baker injured his ankle against Holmes last week, but he stayed home with the flu.
It didnât make any difference.
Not when Highlands held Ashland and opened its scoring when Houliston found Alex Veneman for an 18-yard score less than three minutes in.
Not after Houliston-to-Justin Weyer from 11 yards away, or after Matt Gall recovered Hunter Prince's fumble, which Houliston converted into 21-0 when he found Jensen Feggins for 23 yards and connected with Veneman again from 25 out.
And finally, not after Houliston-to-Mitchell Cain for a 13-yard TD a little more than five minutes into the second quarter.
âIâd break free to look for any receiver,â Ashland senior linebacker Jacob Gilbert said. â(Houliston) just found the seams. He executed very well.â
The Highlands defense was stingy â it held Ashland to 38 total yards.
Veneman led nine Bluebird receivers with four catches for 84 yards. James Queen led Ashland with five catches for 38.
Highlands (11-1) coach Dale Mueller has seen some pretty good quarterbacks: former Cincinnati starter Gino Guidugli; former Kentucky Wildcat and New York Giant Jared Lorenzen; and current UK quarterback Patrick Towles. So what about Houliston â Mueller's current âall-time favorite quarterback?â
âHe is just brilliant,â Mueller said. âHe makes such great decisions. He is a total joy to coach.â
Highlandsâ Beau Hogeâs run made it 42-0 Bluebirds when he scored from 12 yards out midway through the second quarter, and Griffin Urlage took one of three Tomcat fumbles 20 yards for another touchdown.
Ashlandâs only score was Tyler Suttonâs 7-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and Highlands ended the scoring on Austin Hergottâs 9-yard pass to James Grau.
Love hoped Friday doesnât overshadow what the Tomcats achieved through injury and illness.
âItâs a testament to our kids that they have just continued week after week after week to step up and continue to play hard and win,â Love said. âSometimes that last loss clouds what your team has achieved, and these guys have achieved a lot.â

Good point. It is childish to say I want that. Nice win for the birds against a team that hung in the game last year, and hats off to the young man for Ashland that lost his mother at such a young age and to their team and seniors.

About what I expected, Highlands is a far superior team and it showed all night. Good luck to them the rest of the way!
As for Ashland, I believe they have some youngsters who got some great experience this season and will go into the off-season with the knowledge of what needs to be done in order to play at a high level. This off-season will be huge for Ashland, get this young team in the weightroom and with another year in the new system and hopefully make some noise in the next few years.

It may be a case of playoff rewind from last year in its third year playing in Class 4A.
But the Highlands Bluebirds football team is once again dominating those same opponents. Top-ranked 11-1 Highlands did basically what it wanted the entire game in a 56-6 second-round victory over the Ashland Tomcats on Friday at David Cecil Memorial Field.
âYou really can see that it is the playoffs. The guys were so ready to play,â said Dale Mueller, Highlands Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator. âThey just executed the offense and defense so well pretty much every play. It was great play by basically everybody that got out on the field.â
After smashing Boyd County and Ashland in the first two rounds at the same location as last year, Highlands earned another 2012 playoff rematch in the same round against the arch-rival Covington Catholic Colonels (10-2) on Friday. The Bluebirds beat the Colonels, 28-13 for the regional title last year and have won 10 straight in the series including a 42-6 win in Park Hills on Sept. 28.
Highlands could easily play the same five playoff opponents as last year. The Bluebirds beat Lexington Catholic in the state semifinals and Collins in the title game last year. Lexington Catholic faces Mercer County for the Region 3 title next week and Collins takes on North Oldham for the Region 2 crown.
Highlands improved to 98-4 since the start of 2007 and won its state-record 32nd straight playoff game. The Bluebirds have outscored those opponents by 1,115 points for an average of about 35 a game.
Highlands outgained Ashland, 413-38 in total offense and gained 16 first downs to six for the visitors. Drew Houliston once again led Highlands offensively completing 13-of-16 passes for 243 yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore Austin Hergott completed both his passes for 28 yards.
The Highlands offensive line once again showed how effective the offseason conditioning program pays off. The Bluebirds allowed no quarterback sacks.
âWe just run and lift (a lot) to get in shape,â said John Abner, Highlands junior offensive lineman. âThatâs what makes us good.â
Jensen Feggins and Alex Veneman had three catches each for Highlands. Feggins had 60 yards and a touchdown and Veneman had 39 yards and two scores. Evan Allen followed with two catches for 64 yards and Mitchell Cain had 25 yards and a touchdown to go with his first two catches of the year.
â(Wide receiver) is a hard spot to play,â Cain said. âThere are so many people that are great players. You just have to wait your turn and youâll get your chance eventually. They you have to show what you got.â
Defensively, Highlands faced a Pistol-formation option offense. The Tomcats like to fake or hand off up the middle before quarterback Hunter Prince goes outside and either keeps it or pitches to the running back.
Ashland played without sophomore running back Quentin Baker. He was out sick and the Tomcats missed his 1,604 yards of rushing on 185 carries and 17 touchdowns.
The only Ashland touchdown of the game came by sophomore Jake Long. Long scored on a 7-yard run with 8:33 left in the game on a run around the right side. Long appeared in just his second game after transferring over the Ohio River from Ironton (Ohio).
âWe planned for the option,â said Kyle Martin, Highlands junior defensive back. âWe just have a game plan where one person has the quarterback and one person has the running back. We read our keys and contain them. We found out before the game that (Baker) wasnât playing. But we still played the same way.â
Highlands had 9.5 tackles for a loss, a sack and recovered three Ashland fumbles while turning it over just once. Joey Kruse, Jacob Noe and Rocco Pangallo had fumble recoveries with Matt Gall, Braden Hicks and Brady Murray all recording two tackles for a loss each. Seth Hope and Kruse also combined to sack Prince.
The Bluebirds hit the running clock with 7:12 left in the second quarter. Thatâs when Cain had a 12-yard pass from Houliston.
They jumped out to a 29-0 lead after the first quarter. Veneman had 18 and 23-yard scores with Weyer and Feggins scoring from 12 and 25 yards out respectively. Brandon Hergott recorded the two-point conversion after Venemanâs second score.
Highlands led 42-0 at halftime scoring on all six possessions. Nick Kendall scored on a 12-yard run. He finished with 70 yards rushing as the Bluebirds rested senior running backs Zach Harris and Jaylen Hayes.
The Bluebirds scored once in each of the final two quarters. Joey Kruse returned a fumble 22 yards for a score with 5:01 remaining in the third and James Grau scored from nine yards out with 3:34 left in the game.
Highlands only found itself in third-and-long twice and converted on one of them. Ashland converted 2-of-8 on third down and once on fourth.

You know, when you say things like "bafoon" and "inbread", you certainly identify the person of whom you speak, but probably not in the way you intended. But you're still a great troll, and I commend you for your tireless efforts.

Yes because teams like rock castle and bell co have never advanced with highlands in there region as well. The defeatist attitude is part of the problem with the birds. Coach love said it best. They are still just high school kids. They are well coached and do the fundamentals well. So you just have to do them better.

I'm not implying that Ashland shouldn't try to catch up but the reality is that Highlands has won 6 strait state championships and will soon win their 7th straight.
