Seems like these two have hated each other for years.
Actually, I graduated in 1989 from Belfry and don't recall the name Bourbon County ever being mentioned as a school Belfry hates..Breathitt Co-yes, Pike Central-yes, Danville-yes(80's), Louisville Central-YES!!!, Pikeville (until the past several years)-yes, Bourbon County-Nope!

Prestonsburg, Sheldon Clark, Johnson Central were definitely mentioned as hated in my lifetime.

Those too Belfry0304, but as much as Belfry loved beating Prestonsburg, we respected them and cheered for them against others in the playoffs and it was mutual. SC & JC on the other hand....

That's why I said it "seems like" they've hated each other for years. This thread makes it look like the biggest rivalry in the state :ChairHit:

When it comes playoff time I usually cheer for all area teams, heck including Mingo Central and I've been in attendance for Tug Valley's two state basketball titles in the last two years. Pikeville is the only one I have a hard time rooting for to win anything.

Maybe it can become that... Belfry vs. Russell in the playoffs for a few years was top notch!

I think Bourbon may be going to 4A in a couple years so the rivalry might be the most heated and shortest lived rivalry ever seen.

I agree with this. Belfry has played some great teams over the years in big games. Some (Garrard, Somerset and even Central....gasp) have earned the respect of the Pirate faithful over the years and converted some Belfry fans to root for them when not facing the Pirates. Others however have earned a large disliking (Breathitt, Bell and now Bourbon come to mind).
There are others that fall into those categories sure, most of these teams on the dislike list have earned their spot on it over several years. Bourbon however seems to have done it with a single loss against the Pirates and a whole lot of peacocking.

I am curious why Breathitt and Bell are on the disliking list. Regardless, if I like Belfry or not, I am always going to pull for a mountain team, over a team from another geographical area.

Because "B" stands for Belfry!
J/K of course.
There are others on my personal list of dislikes but the three above seem universal.

Nothing personal, just a rival. But most Belfry folk will pull for other mountain teams.

Everyone has their own reasons I guess. Mine are just my opinions formed over the years. Since it was asked however. My personal reasons.
Breathitt - 1999 and 2008. Breathitt has been been the spoiler to the Pirates several times since the mid - late 90's. 1999 was a shootout and 2008 was just heartbreaking.
Bell - They just always seemed to roll into Vipperman with this aura about them. The two haven't faced each other that I recall in quite sometime, the King of the Mountain bs has keep this flame going.
Bourbon - Peacocks.
---
Others:
Sheldon Clark - I will forever dislike Sheldon Clark after the 1998 crawl. They helped cement this dislike in the mid 2000's.
Pike Central - lots of talk from the little engine that couldn't. Were stories of horse crap placed on our football field while I was in school in the late 90's. Which my wife (a Pike Central alum) says she always heard was true.

Breathitt for me, has always just been that slugfest that neither team's fanbase really shows any respect for each other. The Yankees and Red Sox has become too much of a rivalry opposite of this, they seem to hate each other only on the field but then do this and that and it doesn't have that feel of a back yard "nasty" I don't f'n like you brawl such as WVU/Pitt or Ohio State/Michigan. That's what Belfry and Breathitt was to me and tbh I missed that this year.
11-25-2013, 02:32 PM
Bell, not so much for me...always respected them and def pulled for them in their last state title game...Like was said earlier, the King of the Mountains thing got old fast.
Breathitt ...Holcomb...rear end performances too many times with no flags.
PC..talk, talk, talk and no walk, walk, walk.
SC, Pikeville, and some others have sadly become insignificant for me.

Better recap than I can type up, from a thread earlier this year floating around the net:
The Matney thread brought this one back up in memory as this was the game that basically stood as the cornerstone of Jim Matney's rise to prominence in KY HS Football.
Belfry entered as a heavy favorite after defeating Sheldon Clark 42-22 in the regular season in a game that Belfry pulled their starters. This was the height of the Jonathan Wright era at Belfry where the Pirates actually ran exclusively out of the shotgun. The week prior Belfry had defeated Bell County 14-13 in the Final Minute.
Sheldon Clark executed the perfect gameplan as they ran about 3 total plays the entire night and ran the QB keeper no less than 20 times. It was the epitome of 3 yards and a cloud of dust as SC converted no less than 6 or 7 4th and Shorts. After each run they would milk the play clock to the final second before doing it all over again keeping Belfry's offense off the field. From what I recall SC lead 8-0 basically the entire game before Belfry scored a late TD and converted the 2 point conversion to tie it up and force OT.
Belfry scored first and kicked the XP to take a 15-8 lead. SC responded with a TD then chose to go for the win. The Cards handed the ball to RB Moe Spradlin who was stuffed at the LOS then literally crawled a yard into the endzone. The refs ruled it was successful though WYMT had a clear replay which showed he should have been ruled down.

I can recall that game to this day, as he tried to crawl over the goal line and he didn't make it over, the good ole days at Vipperman Stadium. I was standing on the inside of of Vipperman Stadium on that end of the endzone where he was clearly stopped before crossing the goal line.

It was an amazing game and kept me from announcing a "bucket list" game the next week at Vipperman. Belfry would have hosted Highlands and to this day I haven't announced a Belfry/HHS game. Highlands went on to defeat SC at SC and then they rolled Waggener 56-7 for another state championship.

And now the cheerleaders of both teams are exchanging hilarious
comments on twitter. Some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen. Like someone said above,
If I didn't know any better, I would think this was a huge rivalry game.

When was the last time Bourbon played in a game with as much hype, and with as much on the line, as this?
I know last year definitely is congruent in terms of what was on the line...but I am wondering if Bourbon has ever played a game with the enormity of this Friday in their program's history aside from the State Championship win.
Even in that Championship Game Bourbon entered basically with the stigma of "Nothing to Lose" being such a dark horse team that made the run... not nearly the pressure as what they have entering this week.
The next question that goes along with that is will it have an affect on the mental aspect of this game?
Belfry has been on this stage numerous times...every single player on the team has played for a State Title (even the Freshmen who played for one at the Middle School Level).. for the Seniors this is their 4th Semi-Final in a row and I would say they have played in 8-10 games where the environment was electric with their season on the line (3 State Finals, 3 Semi-Finals, the past two Breathitt Regional Finals).
There is no doubt from comments on here and on Twitter that the Bourbon players are obsessively thinking of Friday.. and with time off for Thanksgiving, that will only amplify. This could be good...but I think we can all agree that it could also be a bad thing for Bourbon if they come out tight.
The players arent thinking obsessively about the game, they are actually pretty relaxed. It's the fans who seem to be obsessing. This group of seniors have had a great run of success, even through Middle School going undefeated in their 7th and 8th grade season. That being said, you are probably correct in saying that this game will have the most hype and expectations behind it. I promise this game will not disappoint!

I am happy with where Bourbon is. Year 2 and the new staff is playing for a chance to go to BG for the second time. One thing Belfry has on their side is these kids have run their same Wing T / Belly Read since they were knee high in diapers. Bourbon's seniors went from running a playground offense in Middle School (passed down from the HS team) to a generic Power offense their Freshman and Sophomore year, to a full out spread offense as Junior's and Seniors. If they play their game, I like their chances, if they come out and pee down their leg like last year, they will be lulled to sleep again by the treacherous Belly Read/option!

Zach Morris made last years game... He could catapult this thread into legendary

We will be hearing the pads POP early in this game! I think the Pirates will over power Bourbon in the end, and it won't be as close as what people may imagine. Bourbon hasn't played against an O-line and backfield like Belfry this year and won't be able to go 4 quaters with them. Belfry's D has played with some high powered offense's this year and have been successful (minus JC). The new D is also better than before, although I like Dakota Stanley better than Catron at LB. Catron isn't bad, but he lacks the size to stuff a big gaurd or tackle at the LOS IMO. He will definelty lay the big hit though.
It put a smile on my face to see Hatfield get some carries last game! Hopefully he gets more this week. Carr is a great FB, but I like Hatfield better at that position. Johnson, Carr and Hatfield is one deadly combination in the backfield!
Belfry 42
Bourbon 14

I have to say Bourbon County is one of the prettiest places on earth, and I love the town of Paris. There may not be a lot to do there, but it is a nice little town. With that being said, I am a Paris Greyhound man. I hope Belfry spanks that a$$.
