Alot of the play calling was determined by personel though. Thats why you saw more wildcat and messer at qb this year. Adam had the heart of a lion and great determination. He was a very patient runner, took care of the ball, and the players all had tremendous respect for him. But he didnt h e the arm to open teams up. Next year, if Young takes care of the ball, you will see different calls made. No matter what the system is, you have to call plays that make positive yards attainable. I believe the call sequence and snap count was something tht needed addressed more than the play calling. We always seemed to have anincredible lack of rhythm.

With that said, I think they need to go outside the program and bring someone new. In no way do they need to clean house, though. There are some really good football minds on the staff right now.

The best thing about going outside to get a new coach is to eliminate the ole buddy system. Many times you do not get the best coaches and/or players on the field. That is a fact anywhere.
If this all turns out to be true, we should know by tomorrow, surely Tj would meet with the players he said were "family" and tell them a hotter young chic is on the block and how he would never leave for anywhere but this is "HIS" dream job etc.
I think without any doubt hindsight is 20/20 and it was a huge mistake to invest in Tj knowing one foot was out the door.
Also the timing....remember how the series vs Russell wasn't renewed, kinda makes it easier + the fact that for a couple of yrs, I have heard he won't leave until this class is done and Russell knew that Tj would then be willing, thus McGlone was tossed aside like common trash. This was in the works for awhile .....the timing all fits.
Please hire someone outside the system or keep falling short every year. I do not see Vanderhoof wanting anything to do with it...at all.
As for Salmons, he may be a former player and current asst. but I see him pissing off more kids and parents that it would be counter-prodcutive and his leash would be shorter than was tolerated for say like the Pikeville meltdown last season, where Tj was responsible.

For those crapping on Tj you are ridiculous and need to get a life.
02-16-2014, 10:24 PM
So let me get this straight.. Some of you guys say the "good ol' boy" system needs to go and Raceland should hire from outside.. But then you bash Maynard bc he left due to not being a Raceland guy or having Raceland roots. If you hire from outside, good chance you get another guy who will be there for 4 or 5 years and then move on. So which way do you want it?
02-16-2014, 10:42 PM
I don't think anybody stands a chance, its Salmons or Lewis all the way. Raceland will not hire from outside, never have. Even when they hired Maynard, he was already on staff as DC.
02-17-2014, 09:39 AM
If what I have been hearing is true, the administration does not want Salmons. Not because of his coaching abilities, but because of his position within the administrative office. He has a job that does not allow him to coach. So unless something changes in that regaurd it wont be Salmons. He will either have to step down from his job to coach, or some other plan of action will have to take place if they want him on the sideline next year. I will be shocked if it is Lewis, simply because I dont know if he would take it or not. Imo, it will be Salmons or someone from the outside. Have to wait and see who applies I guess.

When TJ took over for Hoof, I thought it was a good move, TJ had been in the program, new the routines and had previous head coaching experience. I've heard a number of rumors about the next coach (if rumors about TJ leaving are true), one involves Salmons taking Maynard's job at Day Treatment, not sure about the logistics of that one and the other rumor involves either a head coach or OC from a school that recently won a state title, rumor has it the person is originally from the area. If Salmons becomes the head coach, does he relinquish control of the OC duties and pass that onto Grizzle? Does he still have a big part in developing the line? Who's gonna be the DC? Fannin? All in all, I don't think I am totally opposed to Salmons as the head coach, as long as he is the best option.
02-17-2014, 10:44 AM
I know the coach you are refering to. Its not a rumor that he is interested, but interest doesnt make him an applicant, idk how deep his interest runs, especially after what just happened for his squad last season. But, He's a Greenup Co guy and a tremendous football coach and a great leader of young men in general, Raceland would be lucky to have him or his OC. I have also heard a few other NKY/CKY coaches are interested in the job. I think Grizzle, Fannin, Lewis, Francis, and possibly Robbie Logan will be on the staffif Salmons is HC. I also think that Grizzle, Logan(if he is hired), Fannin and Francis will be apart of the staff if someone from the outside is hired. I think Grizzle will become a coordinater. Dont let his career offensive prowess fool u. He was a good DB in jr high and knows how to read a defense like a book, he could be a great DC as well. I see Grizzle at OC and Fannin/Salmons at DC Salmons was a DL at Thomas Moore. So there are alot of options for OC/DC no matter who the HC is. When all this started my gut said TJ would stick around, the opposite happened. Right now my gut says they will hire Salmons. So I'm expecting an outside hire. Imo, thats what Coldiron and Dixon will want as well. For reason's I wont get into.

Sounds like it's official, read on the other site that he met with the players this morning to let then know what he is doing.
02-17-2014, 11:16 AM
heard it is official now, good riddens
this was a done deal going into this sr class final season. 1 1/2 to 2 years ago, was told he would stay that long. Will McGlone support him? publicly...perhaps
Raceland has a chance to go to the next level.......great day for Ram country!

It amazes me how people can turn on someone in the face of adversity. People, itis what it is. TJ got an offer, he took it. No different than when he took the DC/AHC job at Raceland. I'd love to have kelt him at Raceland, but it wasnt in the cards. Do I feel bad for the players? Sure i do. But this is life and things like this happen within it. These boys will band together over this and I have a feeling it will make them even better next year.
02-17-2014, 11:28 AM
no adversity....this is an opportunity!
02-17-2014, 12:01 PM
Why don't you guys just say Jerry Lucas?
02-17-2014, 12:19 PM
Why do you need to ask logical questions?
nicker:

I would just like to say thank you to Coach Maynard for all the hard work he put in while in Ramland. He is the type of coach that puts his heart and soul into the game and out works his opponents. I'm sure there will be a lot of TJ bashing from the Raceland fans but truth is, they couldn't have asked for a better man to lead their program over the past 4 years. He is a great role model for the boys and puts his players and staff first. Raceland football has reached another level because of TJ and his coaching staff. Congrats on achieving your dream job coach and best of luck. Many of us Rams are thankful for all you did here!

^^^agreed. Fball Idk if anyone wanted to be the first one to say it. Imo the statement sounds foolish. I know it to be fact though. He is interested, i just dont understand why he would leave a state championship 4a program to come to a small school. Though it is a school on the rise and I for one think that it would be a incredible hire for Raceland. I have also heard that..some of chuck smith's former coordinators were interested in the job as well. I think that if Raceland wants to continue success, they can win with Salmons. I think getting to the next level though, they need a hire like Lucas.

Any chance a couple of players within the Russell district switch? could be a crippling effect to lose a few.
02-17-2014, 03:51 PM
Doubt it. If they did, it would mean leaving for their senior year. But, with the way things are with transfering back and forth, not one thing would suprise me. I would say alot will hinge on who is brought in.
02-17-2014, 04:11 PM
Raceland would have some very capable candidates if they did keep it "within". But I do feel there would be tons of talented interest if they were to open it up and post it.
If they were to hire within, my opinion would be to either hire back Vanderhoof or go with Coach Lewis. Both have tons of experience and know the kids quite well. Would be an easy transition.

Salmons, Fannin, and Lewis would all do great things for Raceland football. Raceland football is in good hands, I assure you.

Wheels of change are in motion. TJ did indeed meet with players. From what I was told went on, it was a very classy, professional meeting and emotional time for many. Minus one game against Pikeville, TJ always had the kids prepared thebesthe could. he worked as hard as he could while at Raceland and I know he will get Russell back into the thick of things very very soon. Hopefully in the next few years, they can get the RCB back and running. Also heard that Jerry Lucas is indeed very interested in getting back into the Greenup Co area. We shall see what happens once the job is posted. Until then, let the rumors and usual he said she said banter continue...as you were Rivals...looking foward to 2014 and what these two schools manage to do with new leadership.
02-17-2014, 10:08 PM
It is now official, TJ is the new head coach at Russell. There was a players meeting today in which TJ told the team. From what I've heard, it was emotional on both sides and there were no hard feelings. Maynard then left and Mickey Dixon addressed the team.
02-18-2014, 09:14 AM
Spoke with my nephew. He said it was a very emotional addressing of the team. He said that Maynard addressed them, then Principle Mickey Dixon addressed them. The hire will be up to Mickey. With much influence from SI Larry Coldiron, AD Bill Farley, along with members of the school board and tbh, the teachers and community. In such a small, tight knit, area like Raceland, 9/10 times, these types of decisions involve just about everyone they will affect. It boils down to the principle's decesion, but all thoughts, feelińs, and theories will be considered. I'd say there will be a decision made i a month or two. Either way, be it outside or system hires, they will be fine. The weight/conditioning program will continue.
02-18-2014, 08:20 PM
Raceland has officially posted the job opening. I will venture to say some other applicants will make their way out of the woodwork. Salmons, I am sure will apply, I would expect Jerry Lucas to apply sonce he applied for the Russell job and wants to get back into his home area. I am sure some others on the present staff may apply as well. Fannin, Francis (my sleeper from the present staff) and possibly Lewis and Grizzle. Though I feel the strongest applicant on the staff after Salmons is Francis, Im sure many would like to see Lewis take it. I dont think that anyone other tha Salmons and Francis are remotely close to being ready. I feel that those 2 are still a few years removed from taking the reigns as a HC. I just hope whoever they hire, intends on sticking around for awhile.
02-18-2014, 10:44 PM
Why would Raceland not want Salmons?? No one bleeds orange more than he does... He's a young guy who would be dedicated to Ramland for the long haul... You induct him into your Hall of Fame yet he's not worthy to coach your football program?? That makes no sense...
02-18-2014, 11:39 PM
Mike is capable. I just feel an outside guy, someone from a big program may have a positive influence on the program. I in no way want rid of Mike.
02-19-2014, 10:06 AM
If a coach has won state titles elsewhere from a bigger program and is reportedly interested in becoming Raceland's next coach, why the hell shouldn't the school hire him? If he only stayed 4-5 years and brung home at least ONE state championship, that's way more than what Ross, Vanderhoof, Maynard or potentially Salmons would bring. Coaching changes are inevitable, doesn't matter if its JFL, HS, college or NFL. Raceland has had success academically, according to state stats, its about time they do the same with athletics.
02-19-2014, 10:23 PM
As far as I know, the front runner for outside consideration, which we all know now to be Jerry Lucas of 4a Champ, Highlands streak stopper, and story book ending Collins, isnt in the mix any more. Had he been sincerely interested and applied, imo, he would have probably gotten the job hands down. With that being the case, coupled with it being this late in the game, I kind of feel that we will end up hiring from within. Outside of someone coming out of the woodwork, I'd say all big school coaches looking for a job, have found one. Idk how agressive the administration will be at this point. I look for Salmons or Francis to get the knod. Either one is more than capable of leading the team. I think Scott Grizzle will make his way into a more prominant role offensively. Becoming more of a OC or atleast asst or asst to the OC. I believe he has gotten a pretty ood job with the school and imo, will e apart of Raceland Football for a long, long time.
Another thing that I could see happenig is this scenario. Francis or Salmons becomes HC but more on an enterim basis, then test the waters by posting again at the end of next season. Imo, though, this would be a mistake. I say let whoever you hire come in, take their lumps if tey have too and let them instill their style, system, way of running the program. With out outside coaches coming in, you wont see much difference in the look of te program next year.
