Mayfield 42 Williamsburg 0
mightydog Wrote:Where do the athletes come from? Hard to believe that many athletes with both speed for the skill positions and size for the line are in a small school year after year.

Look mayfield has had that kind of skill set and speed year after year. You'd be surprised at all the talent that's in this area. A Lot of kids drop out so it's kind but surprisingly it's still a ton of talent in this area. Mayfield prolly would have a ton of more appearances had they started running spread offense years earlier. We use to just run and run. But now the coaching staff utilizes more of the players speed instead of having them sitting on the sideline watching.
It's funny you mention that. I was figuring boys that I knew used to play when they were younger and others that I felt like should be playing. I was at 17 boys that should be out there. 1 of those is a burner to match Deon's speed with a little more size. 2 of them would be power kickers.

Glad your wife was able to witness this great feat by your sons. I am sure she is one proud mom.

My prayers are with you and your family. May God be with you all.

Neither is any other team in 1A. Maybe 2 in 2A, 2 in 3A, 3-4 in 4A, 4 in 5A, 4-5 in 6A.

I was very impressed with Mayfield.
Question for the Mayfield guys...Was looking at the State Track results and I see no Mayfield sprinters or sprint relays in the 2013 finals...I know there is speed on the field, do these kids not run track...
We used to have a great track program, that is if you don't compare us to PT. Our track program has not been what it was in say the 90's or prior. I don't think the kids show as much interest in it. I don't think it has anything to do with the program or anything, it's jus that kids have so many other things to do these days and there is not as much of an emphasis on it here. All year long last year I was talking about one of our bball players that should be playing football as well. He could probably match Deon for speed and has great hands. The kid just don't like football. I wish that we could get all of our boys out for track and a lot more of them out for baseball as well.
I get the question from others all the time about Mayfield and how the reload every year the best answer I can give you was quoted in todays Mayfield Messenger and it reads, " the foundation all starts at the elementary level- thats where a ahandful of former players mold wide-eyed ..little Cardinals who aspire for state championships. Football players learn the basic run plays and a couple of pass plays before heading to the Mayfield Middle School where the offense and the defense are expanded" it also reads " Mayfield is blessed with a staff that is comprised of assistant coaches who have been head coaches at other stops and young coaches who are sure to be courted by other schools" I would say that is what sums it up its not recruiting its not holding back students and every once in a while a family does relocate to the area the cost of living is also low for the most part. But pride and tradition never graduate
So by the time the little cardinals become big cardinals say 10th grade they have had 6 years of this same basic offense and defense in their system, so my guess while everybody else may be learning new plays during the summer the Cardinals are fine tuning all they know
Yep, mine will start 10th grade next year. He has been doing the same basic things for 8 years. Now it is just instinct to him. Now all he has to concentrate on is strength and how to apply those principles to each weeks opponents.
I have an idea that I am wanting to turn into a shirt. It says it all. This was created by a cheerleader. I have pitched the idea to the boosters for a fund raiser. It is unknown if they want it or not yet. Either way I will be getting shirts made. The shirts will be like the attached photo except it won't say take state. Across the top it will say Mayfield Cardinals. The bottom will have State Champs. The back will have the team roster. Let me know your thoughts.
Can you addd back to back anywhere on it?
That's a good idea.
In regaurds to Raceland comments on losing alot, I agree. They do loose alot. Tbh, their district is up for grabs. Even with what they loose, I think they will win the District. Paintsville will be better, Fairview will be in the mix, but, with te loss of Roark and McPeek on their line, they will struggle at times. You will see a different Raceland team this year. They have a few 6'1"+ 300lb guys coming back, that move very well. Isaac Wallace will be a soph with a year under his belt(quite a healthy belt i do add) he will probably go about 6'2" 300 by the time the season starts. Then there's the sargent kid at 6'0 300.

But next years line will be smaller and faster, more traps, counters, and probably more passing. Raceland started the year about 60/40 run/pass. Thy ended the year about 80/20 run/pass, simply because their run game was successful. Next year, i feel you will see more downfield passing, bc both the returning abs have stronger arms than Elkins did. I predicted a 6-4/7-3 season for this year, 2nd place in the district, and a reg finals runner up finish. This team proved me wrong.

Next year, Im saying 5-5/6-4 but stikl winnig te district. Their non district schedule will cause them problems but prepare them for the tough road ahead in late november. I expect to see a Mayfield/Frankfort and Pikeville/Williamsburg semi's and its a toss up from there. Class A will againbe very entertaining from east to west and shouldbe for years to come. Just hope someone from the east can atleast make a game out of it next year!
On second thought, the line could end up pretty stout. That is if the Sargent kid is as mobil as he used to be (he was ot thisyear do to injury). The line could go:

Bowling at T around 5'10" 220
Wallace at G near 6'2" 305
Bradley rt around 6'0" 290
Coffee around 6'0 280
Sargent near 6 and 300

Idk if i would like that line against the speed of Wburg/Pikeville dlines though. I hate there such a layover every dang year. Cant we just start football season around The first of the year?

Cool design 55. I bet a lot of teams, including my own, wish they could have one with just 1 championship. 10 is a dynasty.
I think sometimes people here don't realize how big of an accomplishment that is. Thanks for the feedback.

The kid listed above is who you need 4 more just like him. Nice height and weight. If those big 300 lb lineman can't move like a running back then you are wasting your time running the spread. Lineman who can move is what Mayfield puts in place to win championships.

IMO Raceland needs to stay close to the 50/50 run-pass no matter if the running game is working or not. When you get close to the end of the season you have to be able to keep the defense honest and not let them key on one aspect of your offense. Good luck next season!

I agree. Centers and guards need the size, but for tackles speed is more important.

OR add a picture of a mean Black Bear?????
:lmao:
Newjacket Wrote:I agree. Centers and guards need the size, but for tackles speed is more important.

Agreed. Lucas Bradley and Isaac wallace hae great mobility, ver good hand/footwork. Imo i would like to see Wallace down to about 290 next year. His frame at 290 would make a big difference. That is why I look for kids like Logan Mauk, Jared Manis, and others like them, the frosh class this year has alot of them on the line.

Mauk 5'10" 215/220
Manis 5'10" 200
Hall 5'9" 200(very quick)

In regaurds to staying ballanced I agree. I think yo will see more of that from Raceland next year. Simply because they will have a better arm(but will be a 1st year starter at qb no matter who it is), a smaller but quicker line, and no true speedster at RB. The backfield will be made up of several smash mouth, hardnosed runners. Raceland went more to a spread wing several times this year and less out of the ACE package as in recent years. Yo will see more of that and the power I running traps, atleast thats imo.

You have to utilize what u have. An offensive strategy must be in place for organization, lining up, formations, etc. but u have to also look at the team u have and what thy r capable of. I think this year the passing game relied to muh on the screen. The oline moved well from north to south, but outside of risner, not as much speed from sideline to sideline.
What about say a 165lb center that runs as fast as a back?
Wanted to let everyone know that Mayfieldsportsfan's wife passed away Monday at age 47

I think many of you all on here will recall MSF post about how special it was for her to get to see her sons play in and win the state title this year.
