2014 2A top 10
#31
Pirtle won't be the lead back. He'll get a few carries. We go about 4 deep in the backfield. Yes. Nord was a fullback the last two years. He would have started for a lot of schools at qb. He throws the ball well, and can run over you. I'm excited about our Online. They are big. Bledsoe is a D1 player. Team looked great at their scrimmage. They definitely have the horses to repeat.

The Caldwell game will be fun. I really do think the losses of linemen are going to make a drastic change for them. I would not place them in the top 5 until the prove it.
#33
Caldwell is another team that dresses alot of kids and after this year, will be moving to 3a. They don't dress 80, but, they do dress in the 60's and they also had a ton of blowouts last year that gave alot of there younger kids a chance to get some experience. I still think they'll be one of the Top 2-3 teams in the class. When you have a D1 level QB like Sindelar and the RBs and WRs they have, they're going to score a ton of points. Those WRs and RBs are mostly going to be on there 3rd year starting, also, so, they'll be very experienced. Murray will lose it's heart and soul in QB-Boone. They'll return a few good linemen and a couple of there better skill players, but, I see them taking a step back this year, especially with a new coach and system.. Here's how I'd rank them to start:

1) Desales
2) Caldwell Co
3) NCC
4) CAL
5) Bardstown
6) Middlesboro
7) Prestonsburg
8) Murray
9) Glasgow
10) Somerset

Sleepers - Butler Co, Leslie Co..Both of these teams will be better than most think.

IMO, its Desales too lose with NCC a slight 2nd. Everyone else is playing for the playoffs until they come up against one of these 2 teams. Sorry Caldwell you had your chance and didn't take advantage of it. Flip a coin to see who comes out of the mountains, but I'm still going to go with Somerset until someone beats them.

1)Desales
2)NCC
3)Somerset
4)Caldwell
5) thru 10) ?

And for the Mayfield fans who think they are #1 in both 1a and 2a, be careful what you wish for!

With Doan going to Southwestern, Somerset will be hard pushed to win their Dist. With that being said, I think they will be a hard out in the play-offs. Then the following year they will be the team to beat in the mountains.:Cheerlead:Cheerlead:Cheerlead

One thing is for sure, the Somerset players will be well coached and will go into every game giving everything they got, I got the ultimate respect for Coach Lucas and his staff!

Best wishes to Jumper nation!!!TongueirateSho

For the most part, the Mayfield fans call them like they see them. Some years, they think they could of won it all in 2a or even 3a, other years, they don't. The past few years they certainly could have competed for it.

CAL and Desales will both be a strong challenge to not only Mayfield, but, all of
2a. NCC will always be there, as well. No one from Mayfield feels they'll come into 2a and cakewalk right through it. It'll be a tough road.

But, I will say, to those Desales fans who think they're going to run roughshod over 2A for the next 5 years, simply because they dress 80 kids, may need to humble themselves a little. One title in the history of the school doesn't make you a traditional powerhouse and don't think those that are are going to roll over for you and crown you king. You may win your share of 2a championships, but, I guarantee you, if you do, you'll have to earn it.

Let's remember that DeSales had to play in 4A with the rest of the Jefferson county schools for most of the schools history. Mayfield wouldn't have any state titles either if they would have competed in that set up. Mayfield's path will be much tougher in 2A.

I hate to see any of the kids transferring. The Somerset staff had done a good job of getting the program to play at a high level on a consistent basis. Only the guys who were involved in the "in fighting" know what happened and what was said. I just think grown men need to put there differences aside and let the kids play the game. Jmo, I don't want to offend anyone who wants to stand up for their kids.

You all are giving Murray way to much credit. They just lost their coach. That will mean they will drop off significantly. It will take a new coach at least 2-3 years to get them to buy in to the new program. Murray always has plenty of talent. They just don't seem to mesh that talent into the proper program.

I agree with you on murray. New coach that i dont know much about, so i wont knock him, but im sure it will take some time to get the players to learn his system. I think the loss of boone will hurt, i bet caldwel fans are glad he is gone. I think caldwell wins with ease this year, and i would have caldwell in the top 5, but you may be right about the loss of some good lineman causing them to drop off alittle, but i dont think they will be to far away from being as good this year. There defense is my concern as that was there achilles heel last year.

Middlesboro is going to surprise a lot of you folks.
#44
We heard that about Middlesboro last year and they faltered.

1. CAL
2. Desales
3. NCC
4. Caldwell co.
5. Glasgow
6 Murray
7. Prestonsburg
8. Middlesboro

1 Caldwell Co
2 Desales
3 NCC
4 CAL
5 Owensboro Catholic
6 Middlesboro
7 Prestonsburg
8 Glasgow
9 Bardstown
10 Somerset

There are a couple others who are worthy of a top 10 but for now they are on the outside looking in...

Mayfield has played 75 games over the past 5 years. Their record is 70-5. The record against Caldwell during that time is 3-2.
#48
Murray was a mystery to me last year. I don't see how in the world they beat Caldwell. They must have left everything on the field after that game, cause our game looked like men vs children. There was nothing about that team, that could have given us problems.
#49
You're not kidding. I watched the Murray Caldwell game and thought the same thing. I thought Murray played sloppy and Caldwell looked confused. Neither one of those teams would have beaten Desales , NCC or Somerset. I just don't see anyone beating DeSales in the West region.

A little late to the party, but can someone fill me in on what happen and why he left Somerset?
#51
Murray had some real good athletes. The problem was that they may or may not show up on game day. Caldwell just went through the motions for too much of that game and then when they woke up it was too late.
#52
What has happened to danville, I know they are still descent and ranked in the top 10 a lot but that's a far cry from what they used to be.
#53
New coaching staff and l think a lot of their talent has been going next door to Boyle Co.
#54
Caldwell did beat Murray a month before playing Murray in the regional final and blew them out, the playoff game was just one of those games where Murray left it all on the field with Caldwell maybe taking them for granted after beating them so easily the first game, Murray played a great game that night.

Its easy to get complacent when you face a team you beat by 29 points already.
#56
It is a big problem when you have to play a team like that more than 1 time. First, if you beat them big the first time, the players tend to get to thinking they will destroy them. Then you factor in the fact that they have a lot of talent and did have a good coach. They looked at what they did right and wrong the first time and changed some things. Then of course, the team you beat the first time is now a little bitter and fights harder the second time.

I agree with all this. I also felt murray is a bad match up for caldwell. A run heavy team that can move the ball slowly down the field and grind the clock. I felt mayfield should have used that approach alittle more on caldwell would have loved to see the power i with hernandez moving it 5 yards at a time and there qb having to stand on the sidelines that last drive we had it tied with 7 to go. I figured murray had a shot against caldwell same as russellville had me worried good run team that plays good run defense on a night the wind is blowing 25 miles per hour and you cant throw deep with any accuracy. Mayfields d won that rematch with russellville and impressed me. Its obvious the d improved substantially since the first game with them and the caldwell game. Caldwells d never improved the week before an average union county went toe to toe for over 3 qts then ran out of gas. Caldwell just seemed to love a shootout and outscore opponents in high scoring games. They needed to send out a search party for there d i think i seen a milk carton in early dec that had there d line and linebackers pictures on it. Guess they can look at this season and brag about beating mayfield since they cant celebrate anything else. Dreamkiller thinks 1a was that weak but he doesnt realize the progress mayfield made on d. If we switched opponents that night russeville would have beat caldwell.

I'm just ready to kick it off against Holy Cross for the Hibernian Cup. One game at a time.
#59
I think Holy Cross underachieves a lot.

These mayfield boys can't wake for 2A in 2015....:Sad04:
