Class 1a - Best of the Best Challenge
#31
You are correct that the 2012 was very tough. However, I watched them more than any of you, I promise. The 2002 had so much depth that we could lose a player and plug another in and not miss a beat. The case and point is they lost their starting qb to a broken hand in the Marshall Co game, when it was Jacob Shelton. They put in the back up, which became the starter at halftime and never missed a beat. They also lost a starting db in the state championship. They stuck in Brian Boggus and never missed a beat. They had so much talent that there were kids just playing special teams that would have started for our crosstown brethren. I know this for a fact. I had a son that played with them as freshmen. He was a very good athlete, went to school on baseball scolly. He was a very good d end. He figured out real quick that he was not going to get a shot with Saxton ahead of him. He made the freshmen year his last for that reason. He later regretted it but... The 2010 team is the only team that I have ever seen in 1a that had more depth and talent than the 2002 team. Granted 2012 we had a great deal of talent in 2012 but if we lost JJ or Jordan Brown or Jake Guhy, we would have been seriously injured. The other two teams that I speak of, would have been upset but would still have won it all.

I don't remember that 2002 team being all that deep. Seems like they dressed a lot less than they do now, maybe 40 to 45.. As far as overcoming injuries, IMO, Jacob Shelton wasn't going to end up being the longterm QB for that team anyway and replacing a DB wouldn't have been an issue at all for the 12 team either. They could have lost a couple of DBs and it not been an issue..

No, we had freshmen to back them up last year. You forget I was a j.v. dad last year. We had a freshman starting as a safety in 12. We really didn't have depth.

If its any indication, the 2002 has 5 of its key members coaching football now. They have another 1 that has done some coaching as well.
#35
2010 Mayfield
1998 Middlesboro
2002 Mayfield
2003 Danville
2012 Mayfield

Gee, looks like I'm a Homer but I think my list is valid.
#36
Smashmouth, you should know better. I have seen all these top 3. The 2002 team would not lose to 1998. Middlesboro was a very good team but, as stated above, the lost to a 3a team that only made it to the second round. I would say they are a great fit at 3.
#37
1998 Middlesboro could play with any of them.
#38
I agree they could play with them, but those two teams would beat that team. I seen all thre very up close and personal. The Yellowjackets had a very solid team and I praised them a lot. They just could not hold up against these teams. These 2 teams could have won in more than just 1a. Their schedules prove it. They played against good teams in all classes and won, most times convincingly.

1. 2010 Mayfield
2. 2003 Danville
3. 2012 Mayfield
4. 2009 LCA
5. 2002 Mayfield
6. 1998 Middlesboro
I had to go 6 as Mboro is way to deserving that year not to get mention

I think thats to low for 98 M'Boro.. That teams RBs got thru the holes so quick, they were in Mayfields secondary before they knew what hit them. Mayfield's 98 team came into that game at 14-0, with wins over the 3a Tn Champ, Milan, a powerful Marshall Co team, a very good Belleville Altoff, Ill team and solid Tilghman and Hoptown teams. The Beechwood team they beat the week before was also undefeated and had wins over Cov Catholic, a powerful Ironton, Oh team and beat Boyle Co and NCC that year by 40+ points, so, what the Yellowjackets did was very impressive. That team lost to a very, very good Bell Co team in a game that could have gone either way and manhandled 2a semifinanalist Breathitt Co and another Top 5 2a team in Corbin.
#41
I agree. That's why I had them at 3.
#42
It may or not bare out, but, the 2005 NCC team that manhandled Mayfield that year has to at least get a few mentions for one of the best.. Not much talk about that team, but, they were a buzzsaw..
#43
^ I think my list is pretty fair.
#44
The NCC team was tough. I woulda liked to have seen that game with our team being a little less rambunctious the night before.
#45
This thread has about died out, so when do we hear the results?
#46
I did my list by adding up what each team was ranked by points scored, and by points allowed. The 2010 mayfield team won by a good margin doing it that way.
#47
I look for KYHSFBFan to have all top 5 teams to be Mayfeild teams..Confusednicker:

Well, we have 3 teams that won state and were undefeated 64. We also had a team that won something like 30 + games in a row. We have had some really tough teams like 2012 that lost once in a really close game to very tough competition from out of class teams.
#49
If ya'll are ready for it, I'll go ahead and get it out..

Pikeville 1987 was best of the best. Thread title should be "Best of the Rest Challenge"

Here's how they came out in the Final Rankings and I'll do one section at a time and then give you the final point total, since I can't get my chart to copy and paste right on here..1st off, let me explain each category.

1) W-L record - I didn't rank the teams 1-16 in this category, but, all the teams that went 15-0 got 1 point, 14-1 got 2 points, 13-2 got 3 points and so on, so, there were alot of ties in this category. While going undefeated isn't the beall, see all, as some discussed earlier, I do feel it warrents at least a 1 or 2 point advantage over the 14-1 or 13-2 teams.

2) Points Scored - I ranked this 1 thru 16. Again, being the highest scoring team doesn't automatically make you the best, because strength of schedule and other factors come into play, but, when you're trying to determine a best of the best, it certainly one area that should be recognized.

3) Points Allowed - Scored the same as #2 and for the same reasons mentioned.

4) Non-District Opponents win% - I took the records of all the non district teams on the schedule minus the head to head game. This way, you're getting an actual figure of how these particular teams did against everyone else they played. Out of state games weren't calculated in these figures.

5) Non District opponents Avg Size class - Again, ranking 1-16, this was the average size school the teams played. Exp: A team plys 5 non-district games against 2 4a schools, 2 3a schools and 1 2a school. You get 8 pts for the 2 4a schools, 6 pts for the 2 3a schools and 2 points for the 1 2a school. That would be a total of 16 pts divided by 5 teams. Out of state schools were not included in these figures. While your record may not be as good as another teams, #4 and #5 gives you an advantage to make up for it if your ND schedule were played and against bigger schools with a better win%.

6) Avg Margin of Victory in Playoffs - I calculated the last 4 rounds of the playoffs. I didn't use the 1st round because in almost every case, they were 40 to 50 point wins and at least in the 2nd round forward, you're playing a district runnerup who's a decent team. I think it's important when splitting hairs on great teams like these, how dominant were you along the way within your classification.

7) Offensive & Defensive strength - I took the # of shutouts the team had in the season and gave 2 points for each. I then took all other games that you heldopponents under 10 points and gave 1 point for each. I then took all games you won by 35 points or more(running clock games) and gave 1 point
for each. These were also ranked 1-16.

I then tallied the total points with the team with the lowest total being 1st, next lowest 2nd and so on.
