Lets get things started with thoughts and predictions.

Pirates sail to victory

Going to be a good matchup.
Henry Clay lost Elijah Bell but should still have a solid team. They were the best Lexington public school last year.
The Young Pirates will have to play disciplined on defense and offensively can't make many of the normal regular season mistakes. Henry Clay also has a long time to prepare for the Pirate offense.

No way to predict this game without first seeing the results of the scrimmages IMO.

Just a side note... everyone needs to remember how good Henry Clay was last year. This is a team who lost a total of 3 games...two of which to the 6A State Champions including a 3 point loss in the Regional Finals.
Had Henry Clay beat Scott County you could be talking about the defending 3A Champs vs. the defending 6A Champs.
Looking at their roster Henry Clay lost Bell and Jackson in the backfield as well as their QB Carter, but still have a nice stable of skill players back. Belfry is going to get all they want and then some to open the season.

I think it will be a very stiff test for Belfry early in the season. Henry Clay isn't Trinity, but traditionally they are a top 10 6A school. They will have very few (to 0) guys playing both ways and will have plenty of athletes to fill the skill/athletic positions. Belfry will have its best shot at winning the game they always have - on the LOS and with ball control football, stingy defense, and protecting the pigskin.
I like the size Belfry will have up front this season, especially on offense. That said, with new guys in critical offensive skill roles and it being the first game of the year, it is hard to know what to expect out of Belfry.
So, I'd like to hear the scuttlebutt that comes out of both Belfry scrimmages and Henry Clay's scrimmages.

Don't know. Tons of speed and athletes but Belfry is rarely strong at pass defense early in the season.
Pieces are there to have one of the bat secondaries they have had.

Hazard should test belfry in there scrimmage before this game and it should help prepare for this game.

Tough first game for the young Pirates. I believe everyone knows across the state just how Belfrys pass defense is from year to year. Last year, just my opinion, was the best we've seen in a while. Even though Henry Clay lost the speedster Bell I'm sure they will have another one to replace him. Looking forward to get the season started and see what kind of team the Pirates have. With my heart id say Belfry 35-29. Thinking with my head. Henry Clay 42-28.

In recent times when these two teams have matched up, hasn't Clay had a very easy time?

Not really.
Belfry beat Henry Clay fairly easily I believe in 2011.
Henry Clay beat Belfry the next year by a fair clip in a game that Belfry led early in the 2nd half until turnovers and a big kick return allowed Henry Clay to pull away.

A lttle info from the last few years between the two.
2005 Belfry 14 Henry Clay 43 @ Belfry
2011 Belfry 34 Henry Clay 21 @ HC
2012 Belfry 20 Henry Clay 40 @ Belfry
Those are the last 3 games I could find between the two since 2005.

Skully, by that stat, it means... it's our turn!
Belfry - 21 Henry Clay - 14 going to be optimistic here but I'm strongly considering it possible that we lose to both Henry Clay and Southwestern if we aren't ready to play - and Harlan County won't be easy.

I would say the same thing. Harlan co. and southwestern both want to avenge the loss last season. They will be ready to play. If belfry isn't ready it could be a 3 loss reg season. And all 3 could come with the first 3 games. When was the last time that happened.

You have got to give Belfry credit. They doesn't mind playing a tough schedule year in and year out.
08-09-2014, 02:44 PM
I hope Belfry can get the win.

This is going to be a huge test for our young team. I will never predict Belfry to lose but we must play a near perfect game to win. No turnovers and controlling the line of scrimmage and time of possession will be critical keys for a Pirate victory. I hope to travel to Richmond, VA next Friday night and watch their scrimmage maybe that will give us a glimpse of this young but talented Belfry team.

History tends to repeat itself so a repeat of 2011
except no missed xp's
35-21 in favor of Belfry

Blue Devils will win this one.

I got laughed at once for predicting that Henry Clay would win 35-8 in a blowout. The actually won 40-20 in a blowout. I don't think this would be as bad as the score if Belfry played Highlands, but I say Henry Clay wins big.

Does Henry Clay play a week 0 game?? I just looked at their schedule on KHSAA & there is just 8 games listed

Hey do some research on the last time Belfry and Highlands played, I will give ya a hint it was a Pike County Bowl, you post the score...lol...another hint it was a Blowout...
