People are failing to give credit to either defense for forcing fumbles, making the ints, or pressuring the QBs, causing a rushed pass or a split second decision throw. Both of these defenses played great. Raceland's defensive front 7 was solid all last night, but in overtime they absolutely went off.

The crowd was pretty weak for both schools. Ams didn't bring a lot either. I was disappointed in both crowds.
As for senior night they were honored before the game. I know that not all seniors got to play every senior night when Ivan was there. "You play to win the game".
It was a weird game. Not the best execution. Both defenses dictated things. I thought Russell was really in control most of the game except for the last 6 minutes. Having to kickoff from the 25 after they went up 21-14 was huge. In the end it was a tight game between two pretty even teams and The Ams excuted better down the stretch.

"The Ams executed better down the stretch"....
That suprised me. I thought it was over when it went into over time. With all Russell had on the line, I thought they would pull the win off. Id have Ran, Thrown, Ran, Thrown if I were TJ. Especially with the success the Evils had with the passing game in the RZ.
My detailed thoughts....
Both teams made mistakes and had costly penalties.
-Raceland: on 3rd and short situations in the first half, we had a couple false starts, causing us to stall twice in the redzone (thats 14 points left out on the field). But, managed to capitolize on two giftwrapped (Maynard's words) opportunities set up by Russell mistakes. 3rd quarter was a defensive chess match. Then ties the ball game up with some trickery to get the tieing score. Couple solid drives that stalled out left points off the field.
-Russell played smart in the first half and didnt let the emotions of the game cause them to make dumb mistakes, they had a solid drive to get their first score mixing the run and pass very well. Beating Raceland at their own game with a reverse pass. Again, the third quarter was dominated by both Defensive fronts. A botched fake punt was a gift on a silver platter to allow Russell good field position to take the 21-14 lead late in the game. They also had a TD called back to an ineligible reciever down field. So there's 7 more points left off the scoreboard for the devils.
-Both teams leading Rushers were held in check for the most part. Both defenses play solid ball and didnt give up big plays to either rushing attack. Russell's offense was more effective in the RZ. Raceland was more determined in the last 6 minutes and over time.
The refs (from the sounds of things) missed alot of calls on both sides and seemed like they had made up their minds from the opening kickoff that they were going to let these two teams play a little rough (btw, you could hear the crowd's reaction to Wallace's sack on McKee over the radio, that had to have been a serious hit).
This was a great football game that, imo, solidified the fact that the Rail City Bowl needs to remain in exhistence.
Glad to see the Rams wake up and good luck to the Devils in the playoffs. Neither of these two teams have an easy road ahead if they want to repeat (3-peat for the Rams) as region champs. Hope everyone came out of this game healthy.

Personally, for me, what this game does for Russell's playoff path overshadows the fact that Russell has now lost six in a row to Raceland. I was looking forward to the possibility of Belfry making the trip to Flatwoods for the first time in ten years. Now, barring an upset, it looks like Russell will be on the road at Belfry again. Russell's season probably ends at the hands of the Pirates either way, but I would have liked our chances better up here as opposed to down there.

The Rams were more physical all night big hit after big hit, starting with the first play of the game Issac laid a nice hit on Ruseell's QB. Then put another on their running back next play and the rest of the team fed off that , Kane put a shot on Caldwell , Howard laid the boom on Caldwell and on 4th down in OT I was hoping McKee seen Isaac coming and would get down becaue it would've been ugly thank goodness he seen him , those are just a few that stood out . To be honest I thought the Rams season was over the team wasn't playing together but last night they looked like the Rams I know tough , in their face defense , hard hitting and never quitting , I felt this game couldve gone either way during regulation but in OT it was all Rams even before it started it just felt like they were gonna bring home the W

Does anyone know how many touches Conley had in the 2nd half/overtime? It didn't seem like he touched the ball much after halftime. I can only remember three... two carries(one in OT) and a reception where he fumbled early in the 4th.
I think he had about 60 yards rushing and some good yardage receiving in the 1st half. I know Raceland kept the ball for nearly all of the 3rd quarter, but still, Nick's been the go-to guy in the 4th quarter of close games this year. Last night, not so much. Gotta feed #4 the ball.

I think Russell saw the weakness in the Rams secondary and tried to take advantage of that and attempt to spread us out and get 5 guys off our 5th guy off our DL. We got tricked by our own play with the reverse pass, but all in all, our DBs kept the big plays from happening. I thought russell's wr would give us fits, but they held it together. Really wish i could have whitnessed this ball game last night, had to settle for the koolhits though. Outside of consistently getting the rosters mixed up, their play by play was a bit more educated than the regular raceland guys. Anyone know if the game was archived any where?

Scotty, you can go to YouTube and search "Russell vs Raceland" or "Hank Bond" and check out his YouTube channel.

The Ams werent more physical. Both defenses controlled the los all night. Hard hits both ways. The hyperbole by some is comical.

They were more physical that's a fact

Fixed that for you. Both front 7's were stout last night. Running room was scarce for everyone, save for a couple of nice runs from Conley and Snyder. Both teams hit hard. Both teams were physical. Raceland won. Good luck in the playoffs.

Russell was better for most of that game. Ams got momentum late and pulled it out. But in all honesty Russell controlled the line of scrimmage all night.

Here comes more hyperbole.
10-31-2015, 11:01 PM
Russell only got big yards from screens or dump offs to Conley I don't think Russell had a big run all night
10-31-2015, 11:04 PM
Not many. Conley hada couple nice runs but want much running room. That seemed to be the game plan. Sell out on he run and make them beat you passing.

It was a great game between two evenly matched teams. Both sides had their fair share of big hits and stupid mistakes. I was surprised by the lack of touches that Conley received in the second half. This game has a different outcome if the Russell kid keeps his composure and doesn't spike the ball after the go ahead score.

I stand corrected Slic. Didn't rewatch the game till Sunday. From the stands it looked totally different. Don't even know what I was seeing in real time. Watched the game from beginning to end and to be honest that was a really hard fought game in my opinion on both ends.
