i know where phelps is coming from. i believe in 2010 lc was 0-10 and 4 seed to play bell co. there was zero chance of lc even being able to compete. 35 degrees and poured the rain all the way there and during the game. about 50 people in attendance for both sides. no sense in playing this game. bell co won 60 something to zero. wasted school resources but more importantly risking player injury, travel accident for team or relatives seems senseless. better to give host team some money and forfeit. this should be an option for school systems with limited resources. since district play started including 4 teams instead of top 2 i am not aware of a 4 seed upsetting a 1 seed.

If you don't have enough to play what do you do?
#9
I hate this. I also think Phelps should be penalized for it, unless they have had players drop out and they don't have enough for a game. You lace up and play the game. If nothing else, for pride.

Good luck to Coach Joplin and staff. I hope they can turn it around over there and get more numbers out.

Just last season #4 seed Manual defeated #1 seed McCracken County in the first round.

Hate to see this happen...
#12
I hate this for Phelps, I really do. I imagine it is tough keeping talent when Belfry and Mingo Central are so close to them.
#13
I'd say they didn't have enough kids. If Coach Jop had 11 players he'd go play unless the decision came from over his head. Wishing nothing but the best in the future for the folks over at Phelps. Hoping they can field a competitive program again.

Pheps is actually inelligible for the playoffs.

This is not a decision made just to forfeit this game. Phelps dropped out of district play a few weeks ago, eliminating themselves from playoff participation in the process. That left only 4 teams in their district instead of 5, which is key to this discussion.

District 6 has only three teams and the 5th place team from District 8 was supposed to become the 4th place team in District 6 for the playoffs. Now there is no 5th place team to assume that possition. So Paris gets a bye.

I wonder if they offered that playoff spot to Berea? They are the only 1A team sitting the playoffs out, and the trip to Paris is a short one.

Probably not. Ya see, that's the LOGICAL thing to do and khsaa has never been accused of being logical

Paris needs that extra week to get ready for the Fairview Eagles!!!

a 4 Manual is like #1 in any other district!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it is about time someone said hell no. This isn't basketball so you people that get on here and say you hate to see this you have no idea about football. No way a team that hasn't won a game should be in the playoffs or even one that has won 3 or 4 games. This doenst happen in football. The kids aren't stupid they know they are going to get waxed and so does everybody else. All that happens is someone has a good chance of getting hurt on either team which is bad and the good team if one of theirs gets hurt in that game it is a shame that he cant play in the next round. So I wish more AD's would say we aren't taking a 1-9 or a 2-8 team and playing a 10-0 team or a 9-1 team. IT IS FOOTLISH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many of us saying they hate that this is happening are referring to hating that their program has dropped down to such a low level. So chill out, take your Topamax, and don't sweat it.

While I'm of the belief also that a winless team shouldn't be in the playoffs, the fact is, that's the current set up and as such, they should put on the pads and go play. That's my mindset. You want to talk realistic? Fine, lets talk realistic. Realistically, EVERY one of those kids knew, when they started the year, they likely we're going to have their heinies handed to them on a platter almost every week. Yet they still showed up. And practiced. And played. That kind of dedication doesn't call for their season to end on a freaking whimper, they deserve the chance to go out and play that last game one more darn time. Why? Because the alignment is such that they could have, and I say they should hop on that freaking bus and make the trip. If the alignment as such that no 0-10 teams could make the playoffs, I'd be saying "good luck next year". Personally, I think the administration took the cowards way out and should have waited until the end of the season to drop out of district play. Paris sure as he'll isn't going to put the kind of beat down on them Pikeville could have, and yet they still showed up and played.

But hey, that's just my two cents.

I think the major posters on BluegrassRivals should assemble an all-star team and . . . in the spirit of good ol' Amerkan competition . . . go take on those Greyhounds!

I know I would make the drive to witness such a monumental affirmation of the drama of athletic competition.

C'mon, pontificators . . . Put down those Cheetos, get outta those double-wides, and play some real ball!
#23
I used to live in Paris. There are enough doublewides and shotgun shacks to go around in Bourbon County.
#24
PHS better not over look their next opponent... I heard that a lot of ppl talking already about playing Paintsville... And that they ain't 💩....
#25
I don't hate this because it stops Phelps magical run to Bowling Green. I grew up very close to the Phelps area and I hate the hard times the program has fallen on. Those that think we hate it because they deserve to be in the playoffs know nothing about very rural, mostly poor tight knit communities. I hate it because I personally know coach Joplin and he is a man of hard work and dignity and I know he is teaching those traits to the few kids Phelps has out. Not every team needs a championship to be a success, putting together enough hard working kids to field a team is a success in a community like Phelps, Stopover and Freeburn.
#26
This is a product of the jacked up playoff system...they have no business playing each other in the playoffs. Julian doesnt want to change it because he doesnt want to admit that it was a bad idea to have a 6 class system. In my opinion he hurts Kentucky high school football.
#27
The problem is Districts of 4 teams. Yours could all go 2-2 & 2-8 while mine could all go 2-2 & 8-2. Can't combine the two & take the top 4 - either my District is left out or yours has an 8-2 left out.
#28
Phelps didn't forfeit they dropped out of district play which puts them out of playoff contentions. That's how Paris got a first round bye instead of a first round 0-1 win

They can't play they aren't playoff eligible they dropped out of district play. Which is why Paris got a bye instead of a 0-1 win in the first round. They have enough players to play this is the reason for Paris getting a bye in the first round
