Russell will win big. Running clock late in the 1st half. The Hawks have given up and looks like there ready for the season to be over. Hopefully my Hawks can turn it around next year but as for this year there done.

Yep. It sucks but it is what is. I was looking forward to Lasrence County coming to Russell. I really liked that matchup in Russell's favor.
You may see 3 teams from district 5 advance.
As for a second round matchup at Belfry. I'll hold off a week.

Agree, Russell's season ends at Belfry for sure. Five O lineman with no tights ends, and running backs without momentum toward the line of scrimmage stand no chance. This scheme hasn't worked all year against a decent oponent and it will not against the Red Army. The short passing game against Raceland was a welcome sight and showed this offense has progressed but not enough to beat a quality team.
Ps.. Raceland couldn't run the ball either out of this offense.

So I take it your not a fan of the Franklin System?
For it to work you have to get your athletes in space. If they outnumber you in the box, you have two options really. Screens and slants to your receivers in space or slide a slot down as a tight end and get an extra blocker. We have seen a little of both from Russell. The offensive line has struggled a bit this year as compared to last year. That, I think, is the biggest reason for the inconsistency offenly this year. Also don't have that power back or lead blocker that you had in Korczep last year.
Defense has been pretty darn good all year.

Agree defense has been very good this year. Agree on Korzep. I would have loved to see the kids we have right now with double tights with a full back running right at a defense. If you remember 2005 , Ivan went away in part from the wing t and ran alot of power football especially in the run to the state championship. This group of devils had the same grind it out kind of kids.

the line for Russell this year does not even compare to last year but I think conley should be getting the ball a lot more than he is I heard he only touch the ball 3 times in the third quarter two passes and one rushing against raceland hes your horse use him
11-02-2015, 03:08 AM
Agree. Last year against Belfry that line stood no chance. Same thing happened at Pikeville last year , the same line had no chance. It was the scheme in both those games as it continues to be this year. We will never know but two tights a fullback and an inside runner would work with all these seniors.

that thing called overall team speed hurts Russell this year and last year especially in those games you mention

This year's offensive line, as a whole, doesn't hold their blocks nearly as well as last year's. Landon Arnold, Logan Suman, and Brandon Scott were tenacious blockers.
I agree wholeheartedly about Korzep. Bronson's value to last year's team on both sides of the ball can't be overstated. As great as he was on defense, I think he's actually missed more on offense. He was extremely versatile and a strong physical presence as a blocker. No one has stepped up yet to fill that void.

Agree ,but I go back to 2005 , those kids were slower as Gross and others had graduated. But they along with this years group were grinders who ran power football. Kasey Clark and company were not fast.

I don't think this group is nearly as physical as that 2005 group up front. Lining up double tights and saying here we come isn't going to be their cup of tea. If it were that simple it would be done. Don't forget they ran quite a bit of power I last year.

it could not hurt to try some good old smash mouth football for Russell but the games I have seen this year they just don't look very physical(offensive line)imo anybody can look good against some of the teams they had played but don't get me wrong I want Russell to win as the other area team I just go to different games on Friday nights(That's the good thing about retirement)I might have seen Russell on a bad night

#79 from last year is wearing #60 this year. His name is Daniel Mell. I'm not sure why, but I don't think he played a snap vs Raceland. Might be injured.

thanks for the info I will look for him at the belfry game but you are right about the line not staying with there blocks that line last year were very aggressive Arnold #70 on one side scott at center Hammond and suman on the other side I watched that Ashland thriller last year one of the most exciting games I have seen in awhile

I wish you red devils the best of luck in the playoffs I love coming to Russell to watch a ballgame everybody seems very friendly and have a lot of class and the players and coaching staff have good sportsmanship and I think that hole school system is a class act

Russell should win this contest with ease. If they do it's probably gonna get ugly the next week when they have to travel to Belfry WV.
11-04-2015, 04:18 PM
After watching Raceland beat Russell last week both teams made big mistakes that lead to the other team scoring twice , what I got from watching Ruseell is they aren't physical at all and their running backs do not like contact . If PCC comes out and smacks them in the mouth they can win this game.

The only difference is your season ends on the road instead of at home, in any case week 2 your season is over.

So you've come to the Russell/PCC thread to insinuate that had Russell gotten the 1 seed, they would have lost to Lawrence Co. in Round 2. That's awfully presumptuous. It's easy to sit back and say something like that now that it's unlikely the two schools will meet this year.
If I were an LC fan, I'd be a little more concerned with Fleming Co. and then maybe West Carter. Good luck.

david5164 Wrote:I don't understand how opposing fans for Russell can get on here and say how weak Russell is and they have weak spots. The Ashland game everyone knew how strong Ashland was this year and would get beat. The other 2 defeats were on miscues plain and simple. The Fleming County game everyone blamed the rain but when you have a 95 yard interception return when you getting ready to score and then on next downs we go for it on 4th down in their territory was the reason we were beat by Fleming. We only gave up a total of 103 yards all night. Then the Raceland game 1st TD was due to the horrible snap over punters head to the 5 yard line to make it 7-0 raceland. Then in 2nd quarter we hold Raceland and we have a Roughing the kicker call and Raceland scores off the penalty. Then to end the half we have a great call with fake FG and we have an ineligible man down field that nullifies that TD. We could have been easily up 21-0 at half and then 1st TD in 2nd half by Russell would have been the KO at 28-0. Mckee throws for 211 and 3 TDs and he has been looking better in the last 3-4 games at QB. In those 2 games Fleming and Raceland too many mistakes by Russell that led to these TDs! In both games we gave up 26 points off mistakes out of the 39 scored. Russell should be 9-1 heading into 3A playoffs this year.
I would say lack of execution and discipline are weak spots. wouldn't you?

The RBs, as a group, probably aren't the most physical. Conley, however, is as physical as any running back in the area, if not more so. I've watched him for three years now and he definitely seems to enjoy contact.

If that's the case then the Ams aren't very physical either. They were very fortunate to win that game.
I guess that's why Paintsville made them look like a powder puff team.

To say that Russell isn't physical is asinine.
