Week One:
#1 Male
#2 Scott County
#3 Trinity
#4 Saint Xavier
#5 Frederick Douglas
#6 Butler
#7 Central Hardin
#8 Simon Kenton
#9 Henry Clay
#10 Manual
#1 Male [3-0] Won vs Doss 50-0
Male hasn't been facing the strongest of teams this year, but they have decimated everyone on their schedule. Including a Ballard team that played well against Boyle County in Week 0. This makes it difficult to gauge just how good they are this year since they typically win those games. But comparing scores, the 2018 Bulldogs are most similar to the 2015 team, which could be good news for Male since they won state that year. Next week will be the real test and determine the strongest team in Louisville as Male plays Trinity at Trinity.
#2 Scott County [3-0] Won vs Highlands 28-7 (ended late in Q2)
Lightning and storm delays caused this game to be called early, but from the sound of it that was the best for the Bluebirds. Aside from a kick-off return for a TD, Highlands could not get anything going on offense and the Cardinals were not having similar problems. Highlands had been expecting a competitive game, but it looks like they still aren't back to their former power. Scott County continues to roll, but they get a stiff test next week. They face Archbishop Moeller [OH] who is fresh off a victory against Trinity. The comparison will not be perfect since the Trinity/Moeller game was called shortly after halftime due to lightning, but it should still give us a better idea of how these two teams compare.
#3 Trinity [0-3] Lost to Archbishop Moeller [OH] 21-14 (ended early in Q3)
I was hoping the Rocks could cinch a must-need win and I could move them up in the rankings, but it wasn't meant to be. The lack of both the starting and back-up RB was keenly felt in the game as Trinity's offensive output was anemic. The defense stepped and kept them in the game, but Moeller looked powerful on offense and missing the starting safety hurt Trinity's ability to protect against the deep ball. Trinity returns to Kentucky competition next week with a game against Male at home. The good news is that this is their chance to prove themselves against in-state competition and one of the RBs is expected to return. The bad news is that Male could serve them loss and give Trinity a 0-4 start to the year.
#4 Saint Xavier [0-2] Lost to Bowling Green 24-21 (OT)
Coach Wallace was searching for his 300th win against his old team after dropping the opener to DeSales, but Saint X came up short. The Tigers starting QB was back for this game and they payed much better against the Purples than they did in their opening game. Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, Bowling Green just edged them out with a field goal in overtime. Next week Saint Xavier plays Fairdale at home and a win is practically guaranteed.
#5 Frederick Douglas [3-0] Won vs Paintsville 57-7
Paintsville is a great 1A team, but in the end they were a 1A and Frederick Douglas had no trouble rolling right over them. It was 36-0 at the half and the second string played for most of the second half. Much like Male, it's tough to gauge just how good the Broncos are because of the quality of the teams they've played, but next week they play Lafayette at home. Lafayette isn't shaping up to be a great team this year, but it will give them a game in common with Scott County and allow us to better compare the two.
#6 Butler [2-1] Won vs Western 46-0
Butler bounced back from a narrow loss to DeSales and took their frustration out on Western. The Bears dominated the meet-up and Western couldn't even score on the second string. Between teams winning as expected or losing to strong teams, there wasn't any movement in the top six of the class this week. Next week looks likely to shake things up due to the games between Male/Trinity and Scott County/Moeller, but Butler won't get a chance to prove themselves until they face Male in three weeks. The next two games for the Bears are ones that they should easily win: Fern Creek (9/7 away) and Doss (9/14/ home).
#7 Simon Kenton [3-0] Won vs Conner 31-13
This game was also stopped on Friday night due to lightning delays, but the close proximity of these schools made it easy to reschedule and finish the game on Saturday. The Pioneers were looking better with this game, especially comparing it with the score from last year (13-6). Simon Kenton was still moving it on the ground for the vast majority of the game which is serving them well for now, but may be easy to defend against by some of the better teams when they reach the play-offs. Next week against Dixie Heights should be an easy win for Simon Kenton.
#8 Ballard [1-2] Won vs Collins 38-6
This was a game that the Bruins needed. Collins isn't the strongest team they could have faced, but the Titans are good enough that Ballard can feel good about the score. The continued dominance of Male and Boyle County help to keep Ballard's earlier losses from looking quite so bad. They have the talent to do better than they have been and getting a win under their belt might help them pull together as a team. Next week they play Central at home in a game that should help to determine if they truly belong in the top ten.
#9 Henry Clay [1-2] Lost to Johnson Central 33-21
From losing to the top of 5A to playing the top of 4A, Henry Clay has had a tough time these last two weeks. This week they acquitted themselves better and lost by less than two scores, the same margin as their game last year (40-28). Much like Ballard, next week poses a test for the Blue Devils. They play Southwestern, a team that just beat fellow CKY 6A Madison Central 23-7, at home. A win here will helpHenry Clay stay in the rankings, but a loss would drop them out.
#10 Manual [1-1] Bye week
Nobody below the Crimsons performed well enough to unseat them this week, so they hang onto the number ten spot. Fern Creek played as well against Central as they did against Manual (33-13 vs 25-6) so it's still difficult to tell if that's a good win. Next week is a game they should easily win against Western, but even with a win they could be unseated if a team below Manual has a good enough game.
Honorable Mentions:
North Hardin [2-1] Won vs Elizabethtown 34-19
Not only did North Hardin beat Elizabethtown, but their earlier victory against John Hardin (31-0) was validated when John Hardin played close to another 6A team, Daviess County (20-18). North Hardin plays Pleasure Rudge Park next week and a strong win there would propel them into the top ten.
Ryle [1-2] Won vs Boone County 41-13
Ryle got their first win of the season, and while it wasn't against a good enough team to return them to the top ten, it does show promise for the Raiders. Their game against Highlands next week could help them climb back into the rankings, but a loss would be a bitter pill to swallow.
Big Drops:
Central Hardin Lost to Christian Academy of Louisville 49-21
Ouch. I had thought that Central Hardin might lose to CAL, Butler and St. X both lost to DeSales and CAL won this match-up last year (15-0). I hadn't expected them to be beaten by 4 scores. The first half was reasonable, tied at 14-14 going into the 3rd quarter, but then CAL poured it on and Central Hardin had no answer. Next week against South Warren the Bruins aren't expected to win, but a close game would take some of the sting out of this loss.

Apparent parity in 6A this year among the Top 5 to 7. Wide separation from those and the rest IMO. At least this year Trinity doesn't have their name already engraved on the trophy. Difficult to judge where they belong due to tough out of state schedule.

Trinity #1 until somebody from Kentucky beats them

I could believe the top 6 have a shot, but I have not been impressed by Simon Kenton.
