Game was 7-7 at the half. Big win for the comets... now on to Bath County!

Congrats West Carter.

Surprised by this one for sure. Anyone got any details?

0-0 end of first quarter. The only score of the first half for the comets was Perry to Bond in the 2nd quarter. Dalton Meade answered with a long rushing touchdown to make it 7-7 at the half. The comets came out and scored 26 unanswered points. Bond had a 50+ yard pick 6 to go with Cline’s 3 rushing touchdowns.

Huge win for West Carter, congrats!
#8
Shocked by this one!!!
#9
West Carter with a statement win and now look to be the favorite to win the district.

Congrats Comets!

Not very familiar with West Carter but this is a surprising final score imo. Thought Valley was the favorite by far in this one.
#11
So much for SV deserving a Top 10 ranking.
#12
Good win for West Carter
#13
No one should be shocked here unless they are east KY homers. West is the district favorite this season and next.

Looked at the final stats, and it ended up West Carter 328 yards to SV's 290. So while a 26 point loss looks bad, and West was definitely the better team, it sounds like the game wasn't nearly as lopsided as the final score makes it seem.

I was not there, so I am only going on what I was told, but apparently Valley drove into the red zone twice in the 3rd quarter only to turn it over on downs both times. If they are able to finish those two drives off with TD's, then maybe the game plays out differently. So major credit goes to West Carter's defense for stiffening up when it mattered.

Also, with the score 13-7 in the 3rd and the game still within reach, Valley decided to put the ball in the air and it ended up a disaster. The Comets returned an INT all the way for a score, and that pretty much decided the game.

Congrats to the Comets, it sounds like they are in the driver's seat for the #1 seed in district. Valley has a lot of work to do before they go back on the road to Martin County in a couple weeks. If they don't learn how to finish off drives with scores, they may not even get to host a playoff game.

Not shocked by the result, although the margin does surprise me. I had actually predicted West to win a close one in the pregame thread.

That said, I don't think the people that said they were shocked are east KY homers. I think it's more of the fact that West is new to this district and folks from this area don't know much about them. Not to mention that since they just dropped down from 3A, no really knew how they would fare against teams they may have never faced before. SV is the defending district champion, so most just assumed they were the favorite to repeat again, even though this team is not as strong as last year's SV team.

Congrats to the Comets again. It looks like they will win district this year, and would probably be the preseason favorite next year as well. Everyone else will just have to get better if they want to take it from them.

West Carter’s defense played tremendous all game Friday night despite not having starting linebacker Ethan Jordan. The lone score for SV was a 65 yard run by Meade in the 2nd quarter. Valley entered the red zone once in the 3rd quarter from what I remember. The comets offense took off in the 2nd half led by Cline and his 3 rushing touchdowns. I expect Shelby Valley to win out and be the 2 seed in District 8 for the playoffs.

The score differential is the shocker in this case.

Also, according to west carter’s stats Shelby Valley had 252 yards of offense but Shelby Valley had themselves down for 290 so I’m not sure which is more accurate

I just obtained the stats from the khsaa website (I assume each team reports their own stats). It lists SV with 290, of which 288 was on the ground. Dalton Meade had 151 yards, and Jayden Newsome ended up with 101. Not sure about the discrepancy between the two teams' stats.

Still though, even if SV was 252 instead of 290, a 76 yard difference in yardage does not jibe with a 4 touchdown margin on the scoreboard. Clearly, Valley was able to run the ball with some success, but could not finish off drives with points. And credit for that goes to West Carter's defense.

Looking at the passing stats, SV was 1-7 for 2 yards. Considering that one of those incompletions was a pick-six that broke the game wide open, (and seeing that they had two 100-yard rushers for the game) one wonders why SV was passing at all? I understand keeping the defense honest, but when you've got a QB that is brand new to the position, forcing pass plays may not work out.

Oh well. Hopefully Valley will get another crack at the Comets in the playoffs.

I full expect these two teams to meet again for the district championship game
