Nor should anyone who puts the economy ahead of human life. Just because a person is bored or struggling Financially is no excuse to put human life at risk. I agree there will be more people who survive than die, but who wants to be liable for the ones who do die as a result of rushing back? And in my eyes the people who are pushing to reopen without proper testing or a vaccine should be held liable for the results.

Ignorant as it gets, for way too many reasons to list here.

To play devil's advocate...
If the economy continues to crash not only will lives be lost to suicide, but you are potentially damaging the prospects of generations to come.
If you want to hold politicians accountable for those deaths, you equally have to hold accountable the ones wanting to prolong this for suicides, bankruptcy, and a potential increase in alcoholism and drug abuse.
In both cases, it is a preposterous notion.

I don't know about where you are located, but the local economy here in Eastern KY is all but gone... Majority of small businesses will not open there doors again, in my opinion. Those that are fortunate enough to still be working can easily say we need to keep things closed until testing/vaccines are available. Even with the unemployment coming through, many will lose their homes, etc. etc. I think you are dead on, if things continue as they are, many lives will be lost and not due to the covid-19.

I do agree that it is important to get the economy going as soon as possible. I just think there are some things that need to happen before we can do that. Testing or vaccine. I acknowledge the fears people have on both sides of this. It is a bad situation no matter how itâs looked at.

Cancel the 2020 fall sports season? Fine. Keep quarantining and social distancing in effect for another year? No problem. Begin the next academic year online? Bring it on, baby! In my six-plus decades living in these blessed mountains and on this planet, Iâve learned to not second-guess leaders just to make my own situation more convenientâand Iâve grown to distrust shortcuts.
Iâm actually kinda surprised that so much doom, gloom and negativity has found its way onto a football forum (of all sports), but a sign of the times, I suppose. Back in the day, football built character, toughness and resolve. Things change, I guess...or maybe Iâm just gettinâ old.
But I do know that no matter how long it takes to outlast/overcome this pandemic and no matter how much we collectively lose as a result, Iâll be here to celebrate once things return to some semblance of normal. Iâll cherish it all even more, and I plan to do it with ALL of my loved ones (not just the young and healthy).
Nut up, folks. I donât know about some of yâall, but this country boy CAN survive.

I obviously haven't been keeping up with this mess like some of you have (I still have to go to work everyday, LOL) but somebody answer me this. I see why the remainder of the basketball season and all of baseball season has been cancelled. I got it. Things are bleak at the moment. But why are we talking about shutting down football when the first game won't even be played until 4 months from now?
To me, even discussing canceling football is WAY to premature. Not only that, it's just causing more panic. Come mid July or the first of August and things haven't changed for the better, then is when the discussion of delaying/cancelling football should occur. Not four months prior. Even if football is delayed it's still better than completely cancelling it.
ALOT of things can happen in four months people. So why raise the panic level and add more gloom than what we already have? When in four months from now this thing could be nothing more than a bad page in our history books an all COULD possibly be back to the regularly scheduled programs.
Like I said, alot of things can happen before the last week of August. For instance, the warm summer weather could help fight/kill this thing, an antibiotic to treat it may have been discovered, or something else could drastically happen to help end this thing. OR, it's about the same or worse. Then, and only then, should we start making plans about canceling/delaying fall sports.
My point is, why not just wait and see how things progress, or degrees, in the next 2-3 months before we start cancelling everything on the calendar for the next 18-24 months? Some of y'all acting like this is like the Black Death Plague that hit Asia and Europe in the 12th century. I'm pretty sure it's nothing quite like that. Let's just relax, take a deep breath, and see how it plays out and stop panicking.

Football is already back, Tom Brady and Gronk are in Tampa getting ready for the season. Plus Tom Brady got in trouble for being in a closed park where he shouldnât be. #55 PirateFan said it the way it should have been said. We canât get in panic mode yet give it time and see what is happening then.

We have to my friend. We can't live in fear, because that's not living. We just have to deal with what's in front of us NOW and take care of the rest when we get there.

Not sure Cuomo is the right guy to quote in this instance.
If we are out for blood and penance on politicians, no politician butchered handling the situation and costing lives more than Cuomo did. Then in the face of his failures he forced resources to be sent that were not necessarily needing sent that perhaps cost other lives elsewhere.

Well I guess we are just opposites. Far from not second guessing leaders, I think 95% of them are not very bright, full of crap and are out for more money and power for themselves and their friends/donors. And I can't believe you think people who are losing everything and aren't being allowed to work are "just trying to make their situation more convenient." I'm guessing you are continuing to get your check(s)?

I'm still working, if that's what you mean. I appreciate your concern.
My employer is hiring, too, if anyone's interested.

I am glad you are still working, seriously. My concern is for people who have lost their jobs and people who are losing their small businesses.

In just the last month, 26 million people lost their jobs and filed for unemployment. To put that massive number in perspective for America's self-absorbed and innumerate media class: imagine if everyone in NY, NJ, and DC lost their jobs. Then double it.

Thanks, and I agree--there will be huge challenges ahead for many on countless fronts. The potential abbreviation or cancellation of a HS football season should be far, far down every community's list of priorities.

This. The government as a whole aren't protecting lives, they are protecting votes.
As for opening up the economy, I'm not sure what the answer is. It's kind of a double edged sword in my opinion. A couple million deaths could cripple the economy just as much as a shutdown, but a crippled economy reeling from being shut down for several months could result in a couple million deaths.

I hope beyond hope that we have a season, even if it starts a little later with fewer total games, not because itâs of vital importance in the grand scheme of things, but just because it would mean that we are approaching something at least resembling normal. Obviously this will eventually pass, but my big question now is what shape will the KHSAA take? They just had to cancel their cash cows in the basketball sweet 16âs, a huge hit to the KHSAA. Now where will the funding come from to administer statewide sports? Julian Tackett was on tv yesterday and he sure didnât sound like a guy who was too optimistic about the future of his organization. This will affect all sports, just not sure how it will play out.

The average for small businesses nationwide is less than a months worth of cash reserves... most local restaurants have less than 3 weeks worth (i'd imagine far less in East KY). Many small businesses simply will not open their doors once this is over.

Yes this is true, I can see it hurting all these small schools Raceland, Fairview, Paintsville, Jenkins, Phelps, just to name a few I could see getting swallowed up by this in the next 5-10 years
04-27-2020, 03:24 PM
^ Yep, that's something that's not even been mentioned. I know a lot of the smaller schools you mentioned depend heavily on local business sponsors in sports. That is likely to be all but gone after this.

With the governor saying today that he thought youth sports would be back in June or July, I have to take that as a good sign there will be a season.

One thing is certain; you can not play or practice football and observe any form of social distancing, I think if we don't see some type of treatment or vaccine the contact sports seasons could very well be in trouble. May play flag....Joking
