Belfry clubs Paintsville, earns berth into Final Four

Tuesday, July 18, 2006 4:21 PM CDT

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. - Deja-vu could not have been any sweeter for the Belfry 11-12-year-old all stars.

Just eight days after clubbing Paintsville for the District 7 championship, the Bad Boys from Pond Creek slapped Paintsville with a 7-3 decision in the final game of pool play in the state Little League Tournament at Paintsville's Paul B. Hall Field.

"If we could have picked any way to get to the final four, it would be through Paintsville," Belfry shortstop Mark Tyler Williams said. "It's no secret that there's a rivalry between us... We wanted this one bad."

The win lands Belfry into a single-elimination, four team tournament to declare the state champion.

"This is where I thought we could be," Belfry manager Randy Chapman said. "Our kids have something special, and I believe the state is starting to see that also."

Williams got Belfry's offense off to a storming start with a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning. They extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the third when first baseman Keegan "Tader" Fields and winning pitcher Brandon Chapman plated a run on a triple and single, respectively.

Brandon Chapman worked a complete game, fanning six batters and walking just three.

"I had my curve ball working, and the heat was on," Brandon Chapman said. "My teammates did an outstanding job backing me up on the field and at the plate."

Paintsville (0-3) got as close as two at 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Belfry (2-1) put the game out of reach with a pair of runs in the fifth.

Williams finished with three RBI. Fields added a triple, a single and an RBI. Gary Runyon, Josh Dixon, Chris Miller and Josh Francis each finished with a single.

Ethan Daniel worked five innings in the losing cause. He allowed all seven runs on eight hits, while fanning six batters. Tanner Fitch worked in relief.

First baseman Jordan Stewart led the Paintsville bats with two singles and an RBI.

Belfry played St. Matthews Tuesday night in the opening round of the state semifinals. Complete details will be available in Thursday's edition of the Daily News.
