It’s early but, it’s also never too early to talk about basketball. What’s everyone’s thoughts for ranking the region next season? Several seniors graduating will mix things up. Not heard of any transfers yet but here is my top 10.
1. Hazard
2. Knott
3. Breathitt
4. Perry
5. Letcher
6. Leslie
7. Owsley
8. Estill
9. Lee
10. Powell
Knott lost a lot but also has a good young team coming back that can make some noise. Hazard will be the top dog as they made a good run last year and have most of their squad coming back. Breathitt also lost a lot but hopefully has a few pieces to replace the 2 seniors. I think Wolfe will have a hard time breaking in the top 10 the whole season. They lost the most this year. Going to be really hard for them to rebuild losing Banks and Miller.

My daughter doesn’t go to hazard but went to the basketball camp they hosted last summer. Coach Howard was great with the kids and made her feel welcomed. She will be back this year if they have one. Hazard has the talent to make a run the next few years. I think them and Knott will be your front runners for the next 2-3 years unless something changes lots of young talent at both schools. Breathitt should be in the mix returning Combs. But, she’s going to have to have a few more girls to step up if they want a run at the title. Losing Gross and Neace will hurt. Gross really has a great end of the season run with several big games. She is one who found her game when it was time for her to graduate. She would have been fun to watch another year.

I have been hearing several names/key players that may be entering the Portal. Anyone been hearing any rumors?

If Hazard doesn’t have any players transfer out, and I doubt they do, they will be the top of the list pick to win the region this year and possibly the following year as well. They have had this team together since middle school and most started varsity as middle schoolers.

It is Hazards to lose but have been hearing a few from Owsley are headed to Perry. Should make things more interesting.

I think after Hazard you could toss a bunch of teams in the hat as about the same talent level, such as Owsley, Knott, Breathitt, Estill, Perry, Letcher, and maybe Leslie.

I hear Estill has strengthened their schedule up a little bit.

That is why Estill’s softball team can have 10 or more losses and still be one of the better 14th region teams. The last time I checked KHSAA they hadn’t lost a softball game in the 14th but had a record of 12-7.

That’s exactly why Estill doesn’t need to be in the 14th region. I guess the poor little school has to have a shot to beat the less fortunate teams that are 125 miles East of them.

Almost same difference from Estill to Mason County as it is Estill to Hazard/Knott/,Letcher.
Estill yo Mason County is 1 hrs 33 mins.
Estill yo Hazard - PCC is 1 hrs 36 mins.
Hazard, Perry, Breathitt also play bluegrass area teams as well. So do they need to move out of the 14th as well?!?!
05-01-2025, 12:41 PM
Estill needs moved. 14th needs reshaped. Simple as that.
05-01-2025, 12:48 PM
Sounds like someone is scared of little Ol' Estill County
I think if anyone needs moved its the 53rd district to the 15th region.
Move Lawrence, Prestonsburg, Floyd Central and Magoffin to the 14th.

Not trying to be a smart a** or start a fight but its always Estill needs to be moved but in reality the Hazards, Breathitts, Perry Centrals, Wolfe County, and sometimes the Knotts and Letchers play some of the bluegrass area schools as well.
Do they need to be moved too??

It’s not very far from Whitesburg and Hindman to Prestonsburg/Pikeville. Maybe move the schools from those counties to the 15th and pull Jackson County, Clay County, Oneida Baptist, and Red Bird from the 13th to the 14th. Then move Martin County and Lawrence County to the 16th.

Sick of having to book Allegiant flights because KHSAA lets this little school in the outskirts of Lex play where they want because they are a small school that can’t compete with schools in their area. Let’s inconvenience everyone else so they can compete.

So the other mountain area teams that are further away can play those Lexington area teams such as Breathitt, Hazard, Perry, Wolfe and so on but its an issue in some people's eyes that Estill plays the mountain teams and in a mountain region?
Sounds like someone is scared of this "little" Estill teams.
Also, Lexington to Irvine is still right at an hour away.
Estill to memorial gym is 1 hrs and 30 mins.
Estill to Perry Central is 1 hrs and 35 mins.
The closest Lexington school is Henry Clay and they are right at an hour away.
So not much difference in Estill being in the 14th than it is the Lexington region.

Again, so its okay for those mountain teams to come down and play these same Lexington schools and don't say they don't cause they do but its not okay for Estill to play or be apart in a region that most of the teams in said region are roughly the same distances from Irvine to Hazard / Perry as it is Irvine to Lexington?
Also, Jenkins doesn't really play any 14th region teams anyways other than the district teams. Heck most of they're schedule last season was out of state opponents.
Move Letcher and Jenkins to the 15th region cause they're closer to those schools than they are the 14th region area teams.
It's wild that Letcher to Memorial Gym is right at 50 misn to an hour as Knott is only 30 mins.
Estill to Knott is less than 2 hours away.
Estill to Jenkins is only little over 2 hours.
Jenkins to Wolfe is 1 hrs 45 minutes.
