Mark Pemberton named Madison Southern HC
#1
Official.
#2
From what I've seen online, he has over 1400 wins in 40+ years as a head coach. One state championship under his belt in 2008. That's the pluses.
He left a school he coached at for a year in Campbell County, TN. Coached at 8 schools in that time. That's the question mark.

Great hire by Mad South Admin! Coach is coming off a big 2-8 season averaging 11.5 points per game. It's sure to get people excited! Believe 7 wins in the last 3 years combined.

LOL.....yeah....realized that after I had already typed.  They had that on a tv interview where he took over at the Campbell County school in Tennesee.  I was just parroting and not using common sense.  Forgive me....I was diagnosed with Flu yesterday!  Shy  Smile

Not real excited. The guy is old, and has moved jobs A LOT! Only 3 coaches in Madison Southern have ever won on a consistent basis. Mike Elkin, Doug Carter, and Jon Clark (who was not supported by his last principal) I am disappointed that the Madison Southern graduate Mark Scenters did not get the job (pretty sure he's been rejected 3 times).

I agree with FF.  Mark Scenters would likely have had staying power where Southern was his home school.  Mark's a pretty good coach and a heck of a guy.  We'll see what this guy does.

Scenters should have been a NO-BRAINER!

Did Scenters get passed up or did he pass on the position?

did MSHS get stuck with last man standing?

I believe the TN guy was the only one offered.

Sounds very political for what Im told. Pemberton was the 3rd choice according to someone on the hiring committee. This sounds like Madison Co politics and a principal doing his own thing.
#14
Hopefully he has enough stock of Red Solo Cups.
#15
They should just combine with Central. Still have a hard time competing.
#16
Was told there were admin demands is why Scenters didn’t get the position…nonetheless I personally wish Scenters would have gotten the job, but let’s give the new coach a fresh slate and support him.

Anyone hear how the spring scrimmage go?

I'm hearing it's not good at Southern... kids transferring, quitting, they hired a bunch of daddy's to coach.

That's dissapointing to hear.  Hopefully they can get their feces coagulated by season start.  I can believe the "daddy" comment.  It's the nature of the beast in Berea.  I remember that from when my kids played little league ball in Berea.  Good luck to them!

When was it going good exactly at Southern? Seen my flyers play them twice and they were the biggest team we played all year and then they started playing... SOFT as charmin... Maybe them softies needed to move on?

Well I watched Spring Game and it was very unimpressive. Wing T is not a good offense for the kids Southern has. Wish the guy the best but there were local guys that wanted the job and that would have brought community support. Southern will be set back for a long time coming.

What offense should they be running then? And don't give me the good ole generic "spread" answer. Specifically, what kind of kids do they have and what offense best accentuates what talent they have.

If I was them I would install the spinning single wing empty spread hybrid. Utilizing charmin like players as a real advantage over tough, gifted and well coached adversary.

Something that gets the few skill kids they have in space, something where their line doesn’t have to maintain a long times. The line there is TERRIBLE and slow, and a wing T won’t help. They should have gotten behind Jon Clark when they had front office changes, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

Regardless of what anyone else says, talent is the number one factor in winning football games. From what I gather, Madison Southern doesn't have much and will likely be outmanned most times they compete. When that is the case, there are really two offenses that give you an opportunity to compete with less talent. They are number one, the triple option, and number two, the Wing T. I would make the Mike Leach style Air Raid number three, but you still have to have a really good quarterback in that offense to make it go; and those are rare.

The problem Madison Southern seems to have is that the kids are more concerned with being flashy and running what they see on Saturdays and Sundays than with competing and winning football games. It takes a different kind of player to run these offenses. It takes players who are more invested in the team than themselves, which is becoming more and more of a rarity these days. If those guys are the type that are more ME than TEAM, then it doesn't matter what scheme you run. You are going to struggle.

Like many schools that are around the same size as Madison Southern, the talent pool is down. A good coach will find a system, that works for the talent on his team. It may not be flashy, but it's the best option. It may not break records or have flashy stats, but it gives the kids the best chance at success. More teams should consider a wing style offense, by the way.

How many impact players transferred to Garrard Co?

Will any others follow if spring was as bad as some say?

2-3 to Garrad Co, and 2-3 to Estill Co. Also heard 4-5 have quit, including a few big impact players.

Not sure what the issue is, but appears to be going downhill fast.

Estill County doesn't even border Southern's District does it?  Maybe in Red Lick?  That seems a stretch to me.  I could see Garrard County if living near Paint Lick and up Wallaceton Road....sort of.  I live in Garrard County near the Madison/Garrard/Rockcastle lines and sent my kids to Rockcastle.  It was the same difference in the drive to Rockcastle versus Garrard from here though.  Garrard wouldn't let them go to Madison County or Berea and wouldn't sign over the state money.  Berea is five minutes from our home and is where I went to school years ago.  Rockcastle turned out to be a good choice for the kids overall.  They got an excellent education and the sports were above average.  I hope they get things settled down with Southern.  I'll be rooting for them in all but one game this year.

I know there were 3 incoming Freshman that went to one of the feeder Middle schools that lived in Estill Co.
