Billy The Kid
#1
Billy, whose real name no one seems to know if it was William H Bonney or Henry McCarty.

He was an American Outlaw with the Regulators who tried/wanting to bring peace back to Lincoln County New Mexico. They went to war against the Seven Rivers Gang.

Theirs many conspiracy theories out there surrounding Billy The Kid's death.

The main story and what seems to be the most factual story is that Billy went to his friend, Pete Maxwell house in search of food, one of Billy's longtime friends, Sheriff Pat Garrett was already in the house in Maxwell's room questioning Maxwell about Billy when Billy walked in. Garrett's two deputies Poe and McKinney were on the porch.

The story goes is that Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid.

CONSPIRACY THEORIES:

1. The theory is that Pat Garrett shot the wrong man allowing Billy to escape.

2. The other Theroy is that Pat Garrett helped Billy escape

After Billy The Kid's "death" their were two guys that went around claiming to be Billy the Kid.

- John Miller claimed to be Billy The Kid. He had the same exact pistol that Billy had, even had the 21 notches in it that was on Billy's pistol.

- Ollie P. "Brushy Bill" Roberts also claimed to be Billy The Kid. He went and tried to get the New Mexico governor to pardon Billy The Kid.

So the million dollar question is; what really happened on the night of July 14th, 1881 in Pete Maxwell's bedroom in his house?

Did Pat Garrett shoot and kill Billy The Kid or did Garrett help Billy escape?

BTW, the movie Old Henry and the TV series on MGM+ "Billy The Kid" are MUST SEE. They're good. Really good.

I love reading  and watching  stuff about the old West. Would like to be transported back in time for a day to feel what it was like to live back then.  Ah, there's always Gunsmoke reruns.

Definitely some interesting stuff there.  I've watched a lot of stuff on Billy the Kid.  I believe I've even seen the series about him that was mentioned above.

I remember watching something, maybe the series.  It told the story of Billy the Kid going to his friends house.  Then it showed the sheriff gunning him down at the house.

I maybe wrong but there mighta been another theory, that the sheriff shot Billy the Kid in his sleep.  Because the sheriff was scared of him and knew he couldn't out draw him.

Idk what really happened to Billy the Kid.  Those two guys claiming to be him.  Then the one with notches in his gun like that.  Definitely makes you wonder if he really made it.

But you often hear stories of people claiming to be someone famous. Especially when the famous person was expected to be dead, and their death surrounded in mystery and conspiracy.  How many people claimed to be DB Cooper towards the end of their lives? Not all of them could be the same person, but who knows, maybe one really is! Definitely interesting stuff!

Something else that's very interesting that I had read is that the sheriff Pat Garrett after the killing locked the body in a closet and would only allow a select few to view the body. Refused to let the corner come and get the body nor let him do any type of tests on the body.

If that's true then that makes this situation a lot more interesting.

I've read a TON about Billy the Kid!! LOVE stories from that era, and love conspiracy theories!!
I've found no proof as to what happened, but from what I've read, I believe Billy the kid walked out of that house and with the help of Pat Garrett and Henry Hoyt, lived his life well into his 70s, if not longer.
That's just my take on it!

I haven't heard of Henry Hoyt but I do believe he also walked out of that house.

Henry Hoyt was a doctor in Texas (can't remember the city) that befriended Billy and doctored him and kept his mouth shut. There's not much to read about him, but what's out there is very interesting to me.

I think Murphy, Riley and his seven rivers gang thought they had Pat Garrett in the back pocket but this could have been the ultimate betrayal and to show his alignment to his good friend Billy The Kid.

I also love to read stories about Superstition Mountain. I visited there one time. It's so desolate, it's difficult for me to call beautiful but it certainly is interesting!!

Great thread! Just my 2c but if anything I have ever read about him or seen in movies is even remotely true (hard to know), he enjoyed killing too much to ever just go cold turkey.

BTW, Paladin would whip all their asses. hehe

I don't see any of them out smarting Doc Holliday.  Even on his death bed he was plotting and taking people down.  At least in the movie Tombstone!
