I saw this kid on campus the other day. I guess he was there for a visit. He will certainly be a great asset to the Pikeville team next season.

I was up there on Monday taking in a little bit of the Fall Ball practice and the Bears look to be improving. Didn't they sign a kid last year from LC? Looks like they are trying to set up a pipe line from LC to get some solid players.

They signed 4 kids from the 57 District last season. Daniel Harless from Sheldon Clark, Morgan Roberts from Lawrence Co., Kyle Sublett and Josh Watkins from Paintsville. It looks like Coach Ashby has his sights sets on making PC a contender with local talent. I know they also brought in kids from Hazard, East Ridge and Shelby Valley. Hopefully, he'll continue to catch the local talent. Congrats to Jeff and good luck this season as you venture to continue next year at PC.

Congrats to Jeff and good luck. I am also an LC alum and Pikeville College alum. PC has always been a great school but lately has really grown by leaps and bounds.

Well, I for one, would like to CONGRATULATE Jeff Cyrus. I KNOW Pikeville College is a very good school. THERE IS LIFE AFTER COLLEGE... + EVERYONE IS AWARE THAT IF A PLAYER IS "GOOD ENOUGH"... THE "RIGHT PEOPLE" WILL FIND THEM.
Way to go Jeff!

PC is a good school when it comes to education. The baseball program just isn't very good. They have had some good players the last few years, but those players definately coulda played for a better program. I wasn't tryin to knock the school itself, I went there I know it's a good education, just sayin that Cyrus could go bigger and better. If anything it was a compliment to him.

Look, it's a great school. We agree upon that. Cyrus is a good player, we agree upon that too. As for the Baseball program, perhaps this gives him a chance to make an impact early on, perhaps Pkv can develop a better program based on local talent, and his family can see him play without having to travel a long distance.... ( I know the family being able to see him play... and that's not just immediate family, that's extended family... was a big factor in his decision )
I also know that making this decision early, gives the kid a chance to enjoy playing his Senior year!

I spoke with Sublett on Monday and he said Watkins is no longer playing. He said it was probably due to his grandfather passing away. Anyone that knew Josh knew how much he meant to him. I was very saddend to learn the news about his grandfather, he was a great individual and enjoyed talks with him. Pikeville also has Shane Sturgill, the former catcher from Johnson Central. I agree it is great to see local boys stay together and play at a place so close to home.

The Pikeville team is young, but talented. They may not be very experienced at some positions, but they've got talent, that is for sure. They got a few transfers and a very talented freshman class (mainly from eastern KY) for the upcoming season. Coach Ashby knows his baseball, and these kids have been working hard all fall. With the right mixture of veteran leadership and young enthusiasm, this team could compete in the spring. I'm sure all the hard work and dedication will pay off.

Ashby knows his baseball huh, lol??? I gotta bunch of buddies that play baseball at PC that say he's dumber than a rock. I know Don pretty good, he played college football, that doesn't mean he don't know anything bout baseball but seriously, how many colleges do you know of would hire a coach who has never even coached before.

He knows the basics when it comes to baseball, but he aint no college coach. Other colleges would laugh if he gave them a resume (or however ya spell it) and it said 0 years coaching experience.

Its always great when kids get the chance to play at the next level, It makes it even better when you had the chance to watch theses kids most of there child hood play sports and grow into fine young men. Congrats

I've seen teams who's coach may not be very "bright" do extremely well because of the intelligence of the players. The players on Pikeville's roster are very smart when it comes to the game of baseball.

I have no comment either way about Ashby knowing what he is doing, or not knowing what he is doing, but I do have a comment on the rest of your post. When you get into conference play against the likes of Cumberland, Cambellsville or Georgetown you dang sure better have a coach that knows what he is doing, or you arew going to get humiliated real fast. Lets look at the facts, Pikeville will be loaded with a lot of underclassmen. The college game is a whole lot different than the high school game and with all the inexperience that Pikeville will have I'll be safe in saying that they are not college game level smart yet. So you better not rely on your players only to take you to the promised land.

i dont know where you all get your information, but he was under Lemaster for 2 years before he took over, and its not too bad having a mentor who played that long in the majors.
you know what really kills me...I dont know the Cyrus boy, but if he is like every other high school kid around he has dreamed of playing at the next level since he was probably in middle school. He finally gets that opportunity to do so and you have people who come on here, and instead of a congratulations(which you did at first REDNECK), but then you went on to downgrade the program he is going into. you have people who are so negative about every situation that it completely takes away the great accomplishment this kid has made. Maybe its jealousy i dont know, or maybe your "buddies," REDNECK, are the ones Coach Ashby let come out just so he can have enough to intersquad and dont get alot of attention from him. Regardless i think you should be ashamed of yourself for not embracing these local kids for accomplishing something great...
Congratulations Jeff Cyrus!!! I hope you have a great career at Pikeville College

All my buddies were signed by and played under Johnny. They all started under LeMaster and started under Ashby last year. I was givin Cyrus props and me sayin that he is better than PC is an even bigger compliment. Ashby did coach under LeMaster, but that doesn't mean he is gonna make a good college coach.
10-16-2007, 08:13 AM
well i dont know you but my best assumption would be that unless you personally played for him or know who you wouldn't have the slightest clue about what kind of a coach he was or could be. Coach staggs had never coached volleyball and he's done a pretty good job with them. You admit he did coach under lemaster so that discredits one of your statements which says that he had 0 yrs experience. You did give Cyrus a compliment but in the same breathe you badmouthed the decision he made...I just wish people would be more positive about the sports system here in eastern kentucky, and what it accomplishes.
