Belfry Pirates--Sailing back to Louisville
#1
Pirates rout Breathitt to punch ticket for Class 3A state finals
BY Randy White

Staff Writer

In the first half of Friday’s state semifinal matchup, Breathitt County coach Mike Holcomb was heard screaming at his defense to not pay attention to the Belfry fullback.

It was a strategy he would come to regret as junior Charlie Dotson ran for four touchdowns to lead Belfry to a 62-28 rout of the Bobcats in a battle of 13-0 teams.

After a two-year hiatus from the state finals after back-to-back championships, the Pirates found their way back to Louisville and improved to 14-0 in the process.

With the win, Belfry will play either Louisville Central or Paducah Tilghman for the Class 3A championship. The title game kicks off at 3:30 p.m.

Belfry got out to a quick start against the Bobcats.

Dotson put the Pirates on the scoreboard in the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown plunge, capping the Pirates’ first drive to put Belfry up 7-0.

Dustin May got the Pirates back to the end zone with a four-yard run with 8:46 left in the first half to push the lead to 14-0.

Breathitt County’s spread offense came back with a quick answer. Running back Channing Fugate got things going with a 21 yard run. His brother and quarterback Colby Fugate found Rusty Herald on a 47 yard pass play to set up a first and goal on the Belfry 3. Colby Fugate finished the drive off with a one-yard TD.

The Bobacats came back with another quick strike on their next possession. Dusty Allen found the end zone on a 23 yard TD run. Dustin May blocked the point after kick to hold on to a 14-13 lead with 1:47 left.

The Pirates finished the half in style. May broke a big 41 yard run to set up a first and goal inside the Bobcat five yard line. Dotson found the end zone for his second score on a four yard TD run. The Pirates couldn’t convert the point after and held a 20-13 lead with 54 seconds left.

It didn’t take the Pirates long to find the end zone again in the first half. Breathitt County fumbled on their own 29 yard line and Corey Coleman fell on the loose ball.

It took the Pirates just one play to add another touchdown to the scoreboard. Andrew Elkins found Dustin May on a 29-yard-play action pass for a TD to end the half and push the Belfry lead to 27-13.

Belfry kept the offensive firepower going in the third quarter. Ivan Lee broke a 32-yard TD run to push the lead to 34-13 early in the first half.

The Bobcats and Pirates traded fumbles on the next two possessions. The Bobcats tried to take advantage of Belfry’s fumble, but Phillip Hickman knocked the ball loose and Dustin May recovered on the Bobcat 8-yard line.

Dotson took advantage of the good field position as he reached the end zone for the third time during the game to push the lead to 41-13 with 7:46 left in the third.

Dotson wasn’t quite finished, though. He capped off his night with a 33-yard TD. It was his fourth score of the night and he finished the game with 102 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Thomas Varney got in on the action on a 29-yard scamper late in the third quarter to push the lead to 54-13.

After Breathitt County added a score, Heath Varney added a short yard TD run for the Pirates. Breathitt County’s Dusty Allen added a late 30-yard punt return TD to set the final score of the game.

The Pirates will look for their third state championship in five years as they travel to Papa John’s Stadium on Friday.
