Since most people agree academics should be more important than athletics what is everyone's thoughts on requiring players to make better grades than required by the KHSAA. As of now if a student has six periods a day that student can have 4 D's and 2 F's and still play. In other words that student only has to be passing four classes to play. Some school's "up the bar" and require their students to have at least a 2.0 GPA. They feel that their athletes rise to the occassion academically in order to compete athletically.

Student-Athletes should set an example on and off the field and courts.

My child has played 3 sports since he was in the 4th grade. This is the first year that he has even made a "B" on his report cards. He is taught at home that his academics come first and athletics afterwards.....

i agree 110%.. if they cant do that off the court or field, they dont need to be on the field

Grades come first, that is the only way to go.
It is terrible to see kids play in college and can not do the work, then get drafted into the NFL and get introuble......yea I know I am stretching it BUT- you have to focus on an education and doing well in school. then everything else should come first.

Coach J holds his players to a higher academic standard than the KHSAA requires here at Pikeville and I commend him for it.

What does Coach J require from his players concerning grades?

How can you trust a player to get the job done on the field, when he is not dependable in the classroom? Academics first:Thumbs:

Alright, since I got us so off track, I'll try to salvage this thread by saying that I think the KHSAA needs to raise the bar as far as minimum academic performance to be eligible. They should go by GPA.
12-29-2007, 01:21 AM
I have not seen one post on what everyone thinks the GPA should be to allow Student-Athletes to play sports. Any thoughts on that?

2.5
People will argue that 2.0 is a "C - Average" but the truth in schools today is that it doesn't take a whole lot of effort to get a B in most classes and in some it even takes very little to get an A. A 2.5 would require a student-athlete to keep atleast half Bs and Cs each.

He checks grades every week and if a player is pulling a D or F in any class he gets placed in the F.A.C.S. program (I dont remember what that stands for) which is basically forcing these kids to keep up with their studies. If a player doesnt get his grades up then he must sit out of practice and games until his grades are brought up. And it is working. At the football banquet CoachJ asked all the kids to stand who were on the honor roll from B average all the way to all A's. I think every kid but 2 or 3 stood up. Now thats impressive!!!

I also wonder what classes the players are in.. Honors classes with a C is diferent than PE with an A. I would love for my child to choose the Honors classes. As my daughter does right now. Out of her 7 classes- 4 are honors. No she does not play sports but thats okay- she is getting an education and a good one at that.

This is exactly how it should be. The parents should be the ones holding their children accountable for academic progress.

Faling Athletic Student Services is what i was told hail. Thad be embarassing to not be able to stand. But they could have prevented that theirselves. But personally i make horrible grades. I never do my homework and guess on test. Only because im not playing a sport right now. So im going to try and stay in as many as possible for the years to come. I want to keep them up for Coach J. especially

I was informed that Pikeville forces their players into FACS if they have a D or F but they can still play as long as they meet KHSAA requirments. Pikeville and most other districts throughout the state have a generic board policy that states they will meet the minimum requirements of the KHSAA.
The link to some district online policies is:
http://policy.ksba.org/
Choose a district and look for policy 9.313.

I think a 2.0 is too linient. A 2.5 should be required to play sports IMO.

Thank you!!!
I feel it is MY job as his parent to make sure that the coach doesn't have a reason come down on him. BECAUSE>>> If he has a bad grade..... he won't be playing!! PERIOD!!!
By bad grade..... I mean 1 grade... NOT a GPA or 2 C's, 1 D or a F.... I have been on him rough sometimes but it has kept him at a VERY high GPA and excellent grades. At the elementary school he went to, they have graduation ceremonies when they exit the 6th grade into Jr. High. He was 3rd in his class with a 97.8 total average for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. NEVER made a B or below!! I do think they it takes BOTH academics and athletics to make a well rounded athlete. If you can understand that one!! LOLOLOL.....

What kind of parent would allow their kid to have such terrible grades to be allowed to leave the house, let alone play a sport???
