There are about 8 applicants for the job so far. Randy Johnson and Sam are not among them. they are not "qualified" for the job. A teacher will be hired as the next football coach at jenkins. One of the leading candidates has 10 years experience.

10 years of experience still doesn't put a good product on the field.

are there any names???

One name that I had dropped to me was Joe Thacker, formerly of Pike County. He has been the offensive coordinator at Franklin County. They have had a bunch of great QB's and score bunches of points. He also was at a couple of other successful schools in the last 10-15 years or so. Interesting move on his part of this goes down. Might be a step down in the coaching ranks. I find this whole thing weird. I always thought that he wanted to be a baseball or basketball coach.

How is it a step down if he has been a successful coach at other schools and scored a lot of points while at Franklin Co? I don't see how it is a step down.

I have coached against Coach Thacker several times and he is an excellent coach. I just don't know why he would leave a successful school and program and go to a school who historically struggles. This is not meant to be a knock at Jenkins. I know many of the kids from that area and school and they are great kids.

There are only two assistants left. Bentley and Taylor since Coach O quit. Taylor is great with the freshman/jv! Surely he wouldn't get rid of Bentley!

I think its time to talk about Jenkins and leave East Ridge and any other teams out of this thread!

Lincoln "Bear" Bentley would be a good choice for Jenkins.

Did I not say Lincoln?

What teaching position would be available at Jenkins, and how many paid assistants does Jenkins currently provide. They have been competitive there the last couple of years, but it looks like they are going to really have a difficult time getting numbers out in the future. Their middleschool program has had 11-15 kids the last 3-4 years and they have not been over loaded with talent. Maybe 8 man would be a better fit for Jenkins in the upcoming few seasons. Also I find it very hard to believe that Joey and Lincoln would consider the job. I had heard that Thack was trying to come back home and that Lincoln was trying to get closer to home, but this job would be really hard to be successful in. I wish the program the best in whatever direction they decide to go, but it is sad to see the smaller schools just hanging on by a thread.

He coached defensive line at Letcher Central before becoming defensive coordinator at East Ridge.

they should have enough to at least put a team on the field
we'll just have to wait and see how good those 11 on the field will be
02-08-2008, 04:50 PM
I have heard from a lot of different people that Jenkins won't have enough for a team. How many students does Jenkins High School have?
02-08-2008, 06:52 PM
They probably can put 11 on the field, but I am guessing that is about it and the 11 would be a little sketchy. From talking to people who are close to the JHS program, it will be really tough for them to put a team on the field that would be competitive on any level. My guess is they will try to field a team but if they do look for them to struggle to make it through the season. I was told that they didn't have enough to field a jv basketball team. That maybe complete gossip, but they are struggling with numbers. I think they only have about 170 kids in the school and I think they had like 15 kids transfer to LCCHS over Christmas break. I would speculate that this trend will continue. I wish them the best because they do have a few quality kids over there that can contribute to any program.

Are there any teaching positions available or will come available for a new football coach? Is Jerry Bentley still the A.D. there?
