WYMT: do they have any journalistic credibility anymore?
#1
This latest fiasco in reporting falsely that Pikeville HS had hired a coach is the second time in just over a month that WYMT has excercised poor judgement and said things on the air about Pikeville High School or one of its athletes without any base of fact. Just rumor, innuendo, and quoting "reliable sources" without getting the official word are the only base they have. The first incident was during the WYMT tournament when one annoncer claimed on the air that he heard that Daniel Harmon was tranferring to "a school up the road". According to both Daniel and his Dad this was completely false. Some of these guys over in Hazard need to realize that they arent talking sports with a few freinds at a resturant. They are broadcasting out to hundreds of thousands of people so they might want to pick their topics of conversation and the words they use within those topics very wisely. Peoples livlihoods are at stake here.

I think we may need to wait this one out and see what happens.

WYMT may have actually had a credible source and they just let the cat out of the bag before they were supposed to. Now, PHS is trying to do some cleanup.

I don't know, but would WYMT be considered credible if Hensley does, in fact, get the job?

Yulp that's what happened....leaked it a little too early.

The powers that be at PHS look more inept than WYMT, for not having a coach in place many weeks after the last coach resigned, and spring practice starting any day now. And, it looks like they have only talked to 3 or so people about the job. The fiasco has been on Pikeville's end, WYMT made a mistake of getting caught up in it. Obviously WYMT had what they thought was a credible source inside the process, which makes it look like there is a lot of confusion on the inside. Not good.

I completely DISAGREE with the above post.
I think Pikeville's administration has done a professional job in going about the process the way it is supposed to be done rather than simply fold to public pressure.

My prediction and JUST my prediction...Hensley will Not be the next coach at Pikeville.

Your prerogative to disagree. Interviewing only 3 people and still not having a coach two months after the last coach quit, with spring practice supposed to start this week is not the way it is supposed to be done IMO.

Thank you for allowing me to disagree...That's what this site is built on, free opinion.

Stay on topic,PLEASE...

this thread is NOT about how many were interviewed or how long the process has taken or whether you agree with the way the committee has done their job.
It's about WYMT or WKYT(who first aired the story) as Next stated.

Could it be the "source" is inside the process playing politics??

I didn't grant you permission to disagree, I only meant we would agree to disagree. As for WYMT/WKYT, and I am speculating here, but it would seem that someone in the meeting told WYMT/WKYT that Hensley had been hired. I seriously doubt they would report this based on someone telling them that someone in the meeting said that Hensley had been hired (second hand)...

That would mean that either someone on the committee or Hensley told them that Hensley had been hired. So, either someone on the committee or Hensley lied to WYMT/WKYT, or someone was telling the truth but jumped the gun, or there was a misunderstanding of what the result of the meeting was. My point is that WYMT/WKYT PROBABLY only reported what someone who was in the meeting told them directly. Nothing wrong with reporting that. I am going to make another guess - that WYMT/WKYT will reveal their source(s) after PHS officially names the new coach...

All this strictly IMO and for entertainment purposes only.Big Grin

I disagree with your disgaree. Why not announce all the applicants for the position? For example, the Kentucky Board of Education learned a lesson around a year ago for keeping everything so hush hush when they were looking for a new Commissioner of Education. Keeping things so hush hush can come back to haunt you.

You may be right! This leak may change everything. If they do hire him, it will be pretty embarrasing to the committee and Pikeville High School, knowing that the leak was true.

From what I have heard, yes...................

Of course they are still credible. WYMT has done a tremedous job of promoting sports in eastern Kentucky. How many of us wait up on Friday night for Sports Overtime?

Again, I ask, could it be that someone very closely associated to the situation is playing politics??? Possibly by releasing false information???

Should WYMT/WKYT have verified the information before publicly announcing it???

BTW, I happen to agree that they do a great job promoting kids in the mountains!
#16
I remember when one of the t.v. stations in Lexington swore up and down that Billy Donovan was going to be the next coach at UK.....wrong. I wouldn't worry about this too much because a lot of news stations want to be the first to release breaking news and will go by just about anything.

However, I have heard that the job would be Hensley's....have heard this for a couple of weeks now, but I expect an announcement of the new head coach by as early as Friday...hopefully.

.

I agree with your prediction. If this is the case and the other three have withdrawn their names from consideration, then that leaves only one person, correct?

By "someone very closely associated to the situation" do you mean someone on the committee or the coach in question? Because that is almost assuredly who told WYMT/WKYT. I don't know why they would give out false info, if it does turn out to be false, because it could make them look bad when word gets out who did it.

I guess even though WYMT/WKYT got their info from someone involved in the committee/Hensley meeting, they should have verified it through the principal...

If I were a betting man Id say after the coach is named whoever it may be that Brian Milam will reveal who "Deep Throat" is in order to save his credibilty. If that person was an employee of the school system in any capacity they better brush up on their drive thru skills. IF Milam took the word of some Joe Schmo off the steet that Hensley is the coach then it will be a big double yolk egg right on the face of "East Kentuckys most trusted source for news". I dont think that he is stupid enough to risk his job like that. So it must be someone close to the situation and quite possibly a school employee and one that he talks to often and trusts. Still he shouldve checked with the principal first either way.

Not to get off topic but spring practice doesnt start until after the girls B-ball season is over whenever that may be. Being that the region tournament hasnt even started yet I doubt it will start this week.

Could someone(perspective hire) playing politics release that kind of information to see if other candidates would withdraw from consideration???

We also have to consider the fact that one of the prospective hires is just trying to raise the price on his own stock, hoping to get a better offer from his current employer. Iv'e been told that his meeting had just broken with the hiring committee when WKYT made their announcment. Just a theory!
#23
I think we are waiting on a decision from Hensley IMO. The administration from Pikeville doesn't want this to get out because if he turns it down than whoever they hire will be the 2nd choice. But again this is my opinion. Either way someone let it slip before they should have.
#24
Just to be fair and clear, WYMT didn't announce Hensley had been hired, they announced the job had been offered to Hensley. Big difference.

I'm not sure what WKYT said in their broadcast but I did see the WYMT broadcast.

We may never know if it was A) a valid offer and PHS is covering their tails after it was released too early; B) no offer, but a misunderstanding on the part of one party or the other left them believing it was an offer; or C) a complete fabrication on the part of whomever reported it to WKYT.

One thing is certain, SOMEBODY credible, at least credible enough for WKYT and WYMT to trust them, reported that the offer was made to Hensley. When it is all over, it will likely come down to "he said, she said".

I think the bigger question is how did the report affect the hiring process, if at all?

I don't know if that would be true with Hensley or not. Word is he really wants to get away from Dunbar. Doubt he is using the Pikeville offer for leverage with them.

Why would they offer the job to Hensley if they still had an interview already setup for Copley? This false information was leaked before Hensley got to his interview at Pikeville on Friday night. I can't wait to see who Milam pins this on after the hire is made. I have a feeling of who it is and let's just say if it is then somebody needs to put him out the door. If Pikeville's girls get beat out of region this week then spring practice can start on Monday. If this happens then don't you think we should have a coach before then?

From what I heard it was leaked after his interview on Friday.
#28
When was the interview? When did it end?

WYMT announced it at the tail-end of the sports during their 6pm newscast. That's usually around 6:20 or so.
#29
I don't believe his interview was until 7 or 7:30.
