They also had 997 yards of passing last year. It is easier to compile yards if you run the ball everytime you run a play. The Beauty of the Russell backfield is mutiple attacks and with AJ at the helm this year in the QB slot,,, speed kills guys!!!!!
Add this QB to the mix and you decrease the focus of the FEATURE BACK system.
Man I cant wait for football season.!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone on here is talking about pikeville boys, but know one knows much about russell's backfield

We all know who the best running backs in the state will be...the next trio coming up at Belfy...
1. Ivan Lee
2. Charlie Dotson
3. Thomas Varney
with Belfry's big hogs clearing the holes up front they will be unstoppable

In one word? Yes.
Ivan's big and strong, and he has a good top speed, but he doesn't change direction very well. I bet he'll have one of, if not THE, highest avg YPC this season statewide.

Dustin May was listed the same way in 2006 when Russell came to town. BIG-STRONG and quick up the middle, did not need to change direction becasue he would run over you.... Well after 19 yards total rushing and a 0 on the score board,, it did not mean much. Ivan is tough and I have a lot of respect for Belfry, but I dont think you will see a more loaded backfield than RUSSELL has this year.
We have had our combos- Gross & Clark.. Clark and JONES,,,,,,,, But this years backfield combo's have the ability to one of the best Russell has ever had in there together since the the early 80's.

Belfry's returning line could make 3 freshman look like one of the best backfields in the state. Belfry has a tremendous ammount of talent returning, but this backfield's effectiveness will be a direct result of what could very well be the most dominating OL Belfry has pieced together.
May only had 19 yards because of what Russell did, not what he did. That was a sensational Russell defense that season. I am willing to bet that Abrams would not have been much more effective last season against that excellent Pirate defense.
From all indications this year's Devils backfield is a mirror image to that Belfry backfield in 2006 you just mentioned. Abrams is a great back, but VERY similar in style and effectiveness to Dustin May, and his complementing players are on the same keel as a Corey Chapman (had back to back 1000 yard seasons at Belfry) and G Epling. At the very best, I wouldn't put them beyond the Belfry backfield of 2005 which featured May, Maynard, and Chapman (all three 1000 yard rushers that season). That's great company to be considered with, but nowhere near, IMO, the best ever to wear a Devil jersey. Especially when just a handful of years ago you had Gross and Clark in the same backfield...

Big words from a team that didn't even get the chance to play Belfry last year. I'm sure Russell has a talented backfield, they always do, but to bring up all that talk about May was pretty much a cheap shot. You never hear anyone from Belfry talk about how Gross was the 3rd best back on the field when his undefeated Russell team came to Vipperman and got smacked in the mouth by Jones and Howard. You don't hear them mention how Doug Howard stiffed armed Russell's all time leading rusher to the ground as he went to the endzone. But thats ok you just keep talking about May. The kid was only first team all state last year and tied for the most overall votes. Where did Gross & Clark end up on the all state ballot? Was it first team?

OK here is my last comment before this thread needs to get back on track.
Where do you get that 15-12 is getting hammered considering how Mercer had beaten every other team they faced all year?

Wow that has to be the funniest comment I have ever read. Russell losing 15-12 is getting hammered??
What would you call Belfry's loss to Central last year with a score of 27-17 a massacre?????

How about taking a minute and going back and reading the post I was replying to.
It was made mention of Dustin May and getting first team all state and the poster asked what Gross and Clark did. I supplied information instead of some sarcastic remark.
As for this year Russell will worry about Russell and I an sure Belfry will worry about Belfry and if we shall meet it will be a good game.

Yes how ironic. If I recall correctly Russell beat Belfry in 05 and 06. But that is neither here nor there. This is about this year.

OKay since I only got to read the posts now I say this...
I mentioned Dustin NOT IN DISRESPECT, but in good favor. he was and is a great RB.. I dont argue that,, the point is said from all teams.. and you are right we can say what we want about the best RB this coming year but we have no idea,, we can just TALK.
Now as far as history is concerned. We got beat by a great Belfry team in 2004. Everybody knows that. Jones and Howard were a great tandem, Gross still had over 200 yards rushing, yea he got pounded, pounded to death but never came out of the game even after injuring his shoulder in the first quarter. He had the fumble into the end zone when he got DRILLED. I am not argueing that we got beat or if was even close, we were outmatched in that game, out played and flat out beat.
BUT believe me we returned the favor for the next 2 years, with the greatest win over Belfry by coming down there and totally shutting down their offense, only allowed like 70 yards rushing the entire game and played prolly the best defensive game they played all year.
We can sit here and talk history for along time. But the post is the TOP 5 EKY RB's in 2008.
here goes.
Drew Abrams- Russell
Harmon- Pikeville
Lee- Belfry
Denton- Raceland
5. fill inthe blank
EKUALUM05-- My words were- "Have the ability"... you are right,, they have to play hard to beat the combo of Gross and Clark.. I bet they will surprise alot of people this year.

I am pretty sure if Russell can bring a trophy up Red Devil Way again, and do so with a dominating rushing game, they definately will make a strong case for discussion. HAHA

What would you call Belfry's loss to Central last year with a score of 27-17 a massacre?????

Harmon goes to Pikeville, not Sheldon Clark. Unless there is one there that I don't know about.

Super-Card Wrote:Big words from a team that didn't even get the chance to play Belfry last year. That stiff arm was on Russell's other cornor that year. He was 155 lbs soaking wet.
But That team wore Russell down and turned a close game into a comfortable victory. They were the best team. Jones was the best player on the field. All three RBs put on a show though. Jones and Gross each had over 200 yards and I believe Howard had over 190.
Yes Gross and Clark were both first team all state.
Fans from Russell and Belfry need to lay off each other. They both have great programs that have produced many very good football players. No need to cheapen either one.

The best RB next year? Abrams from Russell is legit and will be even more special with getting a considerable amount of more carries in Russell's methodical offensive scheme.
