It's so important to get off in the season on the right track. What do you think will happen in this game? Burch brings a legend coach Butch Joplin back to the coaching ring.
What is everyone thoughts?

Should be a very good game, neither team is very strong this year but the Betsy Layne faithful are very excited and since I'm a Floyd County guy myself I'll take the Bobcats by a touchdown.
Best of luck to both!

Betsy Layne by 4 td's.

Burch was probably the weakest 11 man team in Kentucky and West Virginia COMBINED the past two or three years.

If Betsy Layne can't beat The Burch Bulldogs.....It is going to be a long, long season. Burch probably hasn't scored 7 TD's over the past 2 yrs.

I think Burch will be much better than the past, but I do have to say the bobcats will win. Coach Joplin will be in his first year, he did coach some very good pikeville teams.

Well, if both teams are equally bad, I have to go with Burch because of the coaching advantage. Parsons hasn't coached long enough to match wits with Joplin. IMO

Burch won't be much better or any better at all. Butch coached them last year, he just didn't have the title and they were worse than ever. Betsy Layne will have a 4 to 5 td lead by halftime.
I don't even think Butch is that good of a coach anyway. Look at what he has done with the Hatfield and McCoy Bowl.

I have to admit, I don't know a thing about Burch. It's hard to imagine that BL could be 4-5 touchdowns better than anybody. Especially after they lost some of their best players to graduation.

First I think BL willl win. Burch is young . the school is definately in a rebuilding stage. However I can tell you this there numbers are up. The kids are committed to Butch. I don't think they will win alot , but these young men have my respect at least there out there trying not sitting at home playing video games.
Second the statement about Butch in a previous post about not being a good coach is off base. I know this man he knows football abd he treats kids right. Just to say he can't coach because of results in a all star game is stupid.

How about the results of were he has been in the past? How about Burch last year? Butch was there then and they honestly showed no improvement from the beginning of the year to the last. And through his coaching in the all-star game he has made some not so great moves. Like this year, he kept playing Johson at quarterback when WV had no answer for Honaker. But I guess that is what you get when a West Virginia coach coaches a Kentucky team. Players told me he didn't brign towels, tape, or anything like that to the game, they borrowed it off West Virginia.

Betsy Layne should win by 3+ TD's.

Belfry, Burch until last year had no midget league program or its feeder school did not have a program. I don't care who you are you can't win. He has improved the numbers on the team from like 15 to 27. In an all star game you play everyone. It would not have been fair to Johnson if he didn't play. However I agree with you Honaker was better. Butch had an offer from schools to be there head coach and he said no because he wanted to stay loyal to Burch because he told me the kids might be young but they are committed. Again Betsy Layne wins

Again Betsy Layne winsHe didn't stay faithful at first, because he took the Phelps job but backed out. I understand playing Johnson, but he was in more at QB than Tim. I like Butch as a guy and stuff but he won't turn Burch around. Nobody will. In order for a school to be turned around, it takes a whole administration to support that not one person. And Burch is not in support of it, to many individuals run the school, and you know who I am talking about. As long as they are alive and have a push they will never fund anything into football but all to basketball.
Also no middle school program in the past tells me they wont be ready this year neither. The middle school team last year was not fundamentaly sound, but they did have a couple kids on the team that was tough to handle. But I don't anticipate ever seeing them at Burch.

I think that this will be a good game. I love my bobcats, it is all up to who wants it more. I know the bobcats have been working real hard.

I have heard good things about the bobcats this year from sources close to the team. The bobcats are definitely on the right track and if they can win some games it will bring alot of confidence. This year could be a good start of something here. They have alot of talent coming up in the next few years. They have a quarterback in the grade school level right now who could easily throw the ball 50 yards and a half back who will definitely get alot of yardage. The defense will be tough as well. So in my opinion, things are looking up for the Bobcats. BL wins.

Should be a good match up speaking that both teams arent the best, ill be anxious to see this one

I agree 100%. BL's gradeschool has produced some athletes, if they'll come out and play, and they do have two down there right now who are quite promising in the qb and rb

The big thing is for Betsy Layne to get the players from the grade school. The high school and grade school are working close together. I am excited for the bobcats, I hope they stay healthy so they put the program on the right track.

I'll take Betsy Layne. Go Cats!!

What are the numbers looking like now for the Bobcats heading into the first game of the new season?
08-23-2008, 01:08 AM
they have 31 players right now.
But they are coming off of a bad scrimmage. The passing looked alright, but they struggled to move the ball.

I'll take Besty Lane by a couple TD's.

I watched BL play friday, and i think once they got all the jitters out and the line gained some confidence they didnt look like the average betsy layne type team, but i do think they might need to mix up the plays a lil bit more like run, run, throw, or something. I do think that they looked real nice in the spread, throwing the ball.
08-24-2008, 06:22 PM
I have a question. Why do teams with limited talent try to run complicated offenses like the spread offense?
I have no idea what kind of personnel Betsy Layne has, but based on their past seasons, I know they tend to struggle. Why not work very hard on the fundamentals, pick your 2 or 3 best athletes and run the veer or something simple? Yes, you will still get beat up on pretty good when the other team has superior strength on the LOS, but keeping it simple and technically sound, you give yourself the best chance to win games.
Just a thought.

Im sorry but the spread is anything but complicated. Why dont parents just sit back and be fans rather than think their kid is going to be the next big thing.
