Should be a good game.....Estill has shown the ability to stop the run and that is what Harlan does well.

It looks like from the stats that Estill has only two kids that do their scoring.

- Harlan won against solid opponent last week and if they can shut down the run, which they have not done thus far, they should win. It always comes down to who controls the action on the offensive and defensive line when teams that like running the ball are matched up.

I like Harlan County in this matchup, the ride to Harlan County will probably take a lot out of the Engineers.
Best of luck to both!

If Estill can play aginst Harlan like they played aginst us (Breathitt) they will win easily, but if not it should be a heck of a game. I dont see Harlan Co. really stopping the Estill running game. Estill will pull this one out.
Estill- 42
Harlan Co.- 14

Well, according to friday's game, Harlan only has one kid scoring. When you're a running team, chances are you're going to have 1 or 2 main guys carrying the load, but really, the team as a whole does the scoring witht the double wing offense.

I was only noting that there are only 3 kids on the team that have any rushing stats for the season listed on the KHSAA website. Two of which have really racked up some yardage. These boys must be your bread and butter.

Everyone is basing their predictions on the score of one game. Let's play this game: HC beat Fleming 33-0 knocking out 10 players for the next game in some fashion or the other (putting Powell in the playoff by the way). Estil, however, only beat them 27-14. So Harlan will win. I guarantee that Corbin is better than Estil. They only beat M'boro by 7 while HC beat M'boro by 22 and that was with several circus catches being made. So that means that HC must be better than Corbin who is top 5 AA. Makes no sense, you say? Well neither does the rationale that Breathitt whipped up on HC and Estil played them close so Estil will kill HC. Breathitt and Letcher are the only teams that ran on HC for the one who said they haven't stopped the run. Those two teams ran the spread. Anyone who gets under center and plays real football has gotten stopped by HC. Hunter Adams, (and Estil has no one like him), had 150. 70 was on a trap option. 40 was on a scramble at the end of the game against some of HC's subs. Powell ran for 9 yards. Estil cannot boast the same stats from that game. As for predicitions, I predict war.
On another note, in another thread I posted before that Breathitt dropped three wide open TD passes vs. Estil and also kneeled inside the 5 in a victory form. in that game. So to say the score was deceptive is an understatement. Breathitt also had a kid hurt that game. #34 I think it was.
We could compare the last two weeks but Harlan County did not schedule Phelps and Berea. Whew!!!!! Thank God too. Those could have really been some measuring sticks for our program. Real toughies. Until Estil stops playing people like them and Pineville and stops scrimmaging Lou. Iriquois and Jackson County, they will never get where they want to be. Like Ric Flair always said, "To be the man, you gotta beat the man!" They dang sure ain't beat no MEN yet. Whoooooo!!!!:ChairHit:

Try this one on for size. The Fugate kid from Breathitt, or the Gillam kid from Harlan. Not a hard question for anyone who has seen them play, Fugate big. This kid is a solid mountain back, and has great potential for D1. Gillam is tough as well, we've seen what he's done against a rebuilding M'boro team, anybody that puts up 400 yards rushing is tough, but as good as Fugate, not a chance. Fugate had 79 yards against Estill, that's a low number for most top backs, but especially him. Where it gets interesting is he had at least 40 yards (probably more like 50) on the last drive of the game when the Bobcats were sealing the victory. In about 44 minutes of football Estill's D held Fugate to 40 something yards at the most, that's a huge statement, and anyone who thinks otherwise has not seen the Fugate kid play. Middlesboro has had trouble stopping the run, Estill has not. No bus ride is going to effect the way Estill plas, there is a lot on the line this game, and in the end, it won't even be close. Harlan is an impressive team, but if Estill plays their A game, the Bears are handled easily!
10-20-2008, 12:29 AM
So how many yards do you figure Gilliam will get Friday — 30, 40?
10-20-2008, 01:11 AM
The Black Bears win 32-20. How come last week Middlesboro was a good football team that would beat Harlan County and this week they are a "rebuilding program"? The Bears got a quality win against M'Boro and that will carry over to the Estill game.

This game will be exactly what I have been saying all year. I know we must play Harlan for the fact it is a district game. However, by us playing Berea and especially Phelps before a big district game will not be enough to have prepared us for Harlan. Just maybe we should have scheduled a Corbin or a Prestonsburg, a tougher competion never hurts a program that is trying to get over the hump. So I sadily say Harlan 36 Estill 20. Does anyone know if coach Niece will be taking the drive to Harlan co. Friday night? A fan that cares.

i'm glad to see a few people giving Harlan co. the respect that they deserve, but I KNEW without a doubt that someone would say something about "middlesboro wasn't what they were" you CANNOT under any circumstances base a team winning by the person that this person played and how much they beat them by. that's bull and everyone knows it! Harlan is a good team, you all are forgetting that these boys are JUST NOW playing together in their first year, while these other boys have been playing together for a lot longer. Harlan co. didn't not have a spring practice because the school was not finished, so guess what...that means while everyone else was hanging out practicing together getting ready, these boys were still apart from each other. These boys are for real whether or not they get the respect they deserve this year or not. But they have earned mine, and I think they're going to be deadly from now on, anything can happen in a game, have people never heard of off nights? teams have those every now and then, and just because Breathitt and Estill were close and Breathitt blew Harlan out doesn't mean Estill will. there's many different factors that are going to go into this now. Harlan has worked on what they needed to since then, and I'm proud of them from last week!
okay, I'm done with my ranting for the night... sorry I've had a bad day anyways...so I'm sure this seems overly aggressive.
I'm taking Harlan in this one by 14.
GOOD LUCK BEARS! MAKE US PROUD AGAIN, WE KNOW YOU ALL CAN DO IT!

To the powers that be, we must start scheduling better non district competition to prepare us for the district play. I can only imagine other than our 4 dist. games for the 2009 season the schedule will more than likely be as follows.
1 Lynn Camp
2 Beth Haven
3 Jackson Co.
4 Country Day School
5 Phelps
6 The stony Brooke Mud Hens (If there is such a school)
I am sure coach jones will find them just to add W's to his personal resume. A fan that cares!

Comparing scores is really useless. Comparing strength of schedule is also useless. Harlan is a quality team, and so is Estill. The team that wins the game Friday night is the one that makes the fewest mistakes. Bottom line.
Last year Cawood played Somerset and Middlesboro before playing Estill, do you think that better prepared them for the game? Sometimes it seems that we are comparing apples and oranges. This forum is good for over analysis and nameless, faceless venting. Just let the boys play, and let's not try to spoil the game.

Estill played Breathitt better than Harlan did, Harlan played Fleming better than Estill did, Estill probably played Powell better than Harlan did. What does this mean? Absolutely nothing. The team that wins the game Friday night will be the one that blocks and tackles better, making the fewest mistakes.

Estil better win this one or what they did v/s Breathitt will look like a fluke. Go Estill. I really think Estill will win...BIG!

I am almost definately sure he will not be making the 3 hour drive. I would have picked Estill big until Harlan beat Middlesboro in a thrashing fashion. Hard to pick this one. Harlan has been beat by Letcher Central and Breathitt and have beaten some decent teams. Estill has been beaten by Breathitt also but not as bad. Depends on which teams the two bring Friday night IMO. Estill should win but I worry about the previous competition and the 1 week layoff. And to add, you can count on some big runs by Estill being called back, along with a few face mask calls to comfort Harlan.

Be another 9+ win season with the district being: Breathitt, Estill, Powell, and Magoffin. I think that is what the district will be.
