I think the game turned out about as I predicted with the exception that the point total was down for both teams.
It was a tough night that did not go our way. I have not seen Russell utilize such few different plays on one night. It seemed like we ran the same five or six plays all night long. As the night went on it got harder and harder to run the ball. Give Mason County credit they knew the plays we were going to run and just flat out stopped us.
Congratulations to Mason County for coming into Russell and winning a big game.

It was pretty good hard hitting game. Mason County executed and came out on top. Congratulations to the Royals. Two pretty good teams in this game.
Biggest play of the night IMO was the TD at the end of the first half for Mason County. On 4th and 9 the reciever fell backwards into the endzone and the ball went through the Russell defenders hand and landed right in his gut. It was that kind of night and Mason did a good job of controlling the second half.
Russell was killed also by special teams play. This may have been the deciding factor between to very even teams. Mason had two huge kickoff returns in the first half. The first was called back on a holding penalty. Mason County went three and out on that series. The second was returned to about the Russell twenty yard line and set up Mason County's first score following a Russell scoring drive.
Not having Bailey tonight I thought was a big key. He is a big part of the offense, defense and a good punter. His absence I think put Russell in some tough spots.
On a positive note I thought the Russell defense really looked better tonight. They gave up some big plays that should have been stopped but I liked the effort.
Finally the Russell passing game has to get better. You can't hold onto the ball that long. Throw the ball or take off.
Mason County is a good team. I can see how they played with Boone County and Campbell County.
Russell still seems to be a team struggling to find its rythem. I know people have been calling for it but I think they tried passing too much tonight and it hurt them. 1st and 10 at the Mason 25. Take a sack. Get a penalty punt on 4th and 33 and have it blocked. Give the ball to Mason County at the Russell 48 after a good drive got them down the field in the first place.

Without Bailey essentially out, Russell stuck primarily to Abrams on the ground and mixed in pass plays when forced. Abrams probably went for his customary 100 yards, but it was clear that the only way Russell was going to win this game was if the passing game was successful and it wasn't. Mason County made the plays when they had to and came out on top.
This means it looks like we might get to see the old Russell-Belfry rivalry renewed in round 2 of the playoffs. I wish it was under better circumstances for the Devils...but for now, I just hope the Red Devils regroup to compete against Raceland next week who will be wanting to humilitate them on their home field.

Russell seems to lack leaders this year. It appeared that when they got behind the gave up. The Burgess kid played well (this is the first time I have seen him) and Abrams just got wore out. This game is history, learn from mistakes, work as a team and come back next week and play your game.

I agree with you that the lack of on-field leadership is evident, but I actually didn't think they looked as if they gave up quite as badly as in the Ashland game. I think they were trying, but just powerless to do anything to come back on Mason County. They didn't have any tricks in the bag that worked.

I don't think anybody gave up either. You also have to remember that this offense is not a come from behind type of offense. I thought you saw some people pressing and doing things that out of the ordinary once Russell got behind. That goes for the play calling as well. I for one think they went to heavily to the pass. The sweeps were still there all night. Dives were working. Short trap was working. Take the 3 or four yards and go to the next play. The passing I thought put Russell into situations that I don't think this team is suited for. Stick with what you do well and don't hurt yourself.

It looks like Raceland will have no problem taking Russell down next Friday, It will be a good game.

Congrats to Mason.
Russell boys shake this one off you may just see this team again. Get ready for Raceland they are the real deal.
Jeepman I am just asking nothing meant in any way but what other plays could Russell ran to have more success with? With Bailey out didn't Mason key on Abrams? With it being so wet and windy the passing game struggled for both teams except for the LUCKY catch at the end of the half.Like one of the radio guys said somebody else is going to have to step it up.Sorry if I am out of line.

I find it a little disappointing that they don't even pretend to have any sort of hurry-up package.

I'll give you my take on it. You aren't out of line. Russell ran the same plays they have always run and probably a few more.
Let me say this again. Mason County is a good football team. Russell actually moved the ball pretty well on the ground. I thought they went to the pass way to much. The defense played better. If they stick to a grind it out kind of game and don't put themselfs in a bad position with sacks and turnovers in the passing game, Russell is fine.
I really think playcalling did them in tonight. But not that they ran to few plays. I thought they ran to many passes and got away from their strength.

Congrats Mason

It would have been fine, though, had they been able to show something close to an effective passing game.

If they don't execute well in a basic package how well do you think they are going to do in a hurry up?
Its not like they are doing anything different than what they have ever done. When they were going to state championship games everybody raved about the Wing-T and three yards and a cloud of dust offense. Grind it out and wear down your opponent. The coaching hasn't changed.
Those teams got some breaks along the way too. This years team does not play as smart, they are not quite as talented all though not far off and the ball has not bounced their way a couple of times. Its not like they have lost to bad teams either.

I agree there. It seems their passing game is simply to throw it up for grabs and hope the receiver outduels the defender for the ball.

The College One Wrote:solid win for mason. what is happening to the red devils guys!!!They have lost to three pretty good football teams. Russell is just fine. They may not be as good as the past few seasons but they are not bad either.
Let me just say. Anybody that thinks Russell would be an easy win or they are a bad team is fooling themselves. Russell has a good team just not a great one.
When you are an established program expections are high but even the powerhouse teams aren't going to win every game every year.
Also Mason County should feel insulted. Some of you need to give them some Credit. There is a reason they beat Russell tonight. There is a reason that they played a close game with Boone County and played with Campbell County. ------ They are a very good team and have a shot at going a long way in the playoffs.

Yes...Mason County is a good team. I hope they do well in the playoffs.

What set up Mason's last td I had to go out for a little bit and they were down20-7.
Mason is a good team and they did what they had to win. The second kick return gave them great field position and momentum. They scored the second td on a fortunate catch in the end zone.
As far as passing I have never known Russell to pass much. They are a team that runs certian plays. Everybody in the house knows what coming good luck trying to stop it.It all lies in one word EXECUTION.

Honestly, I forget what set it up. I am pretty sure they had a short field to work with, though, thanks to either an interception or one of our 10 yard punts. Again, the punter Bailey was injured so we made do with what we had.
As far as Russell running the same plays...I am just saying it would be nice if we at least did a no huddle to save a little time with 5 minutes on the clock, 80 yards away, and down 2 scores. I realize we aren't going to run the shotgun formation or anything, but I just want us to look like we understand the urgency of the situation.

Mason County got a big stop when Russell went for it on fourth and one. Then the Royals had a very nice drive and punched in the TD.

Well I think they could have run the sweep more than they did. I have yet to see the screen pass that we have run very well in prior years. I'm not sure if our 44 who was in the backfield tonight ever touched the ball. They keyed on Abrams as you indicated and I kept waiting for 44 to carry the ball.
As you indicate they need to shake it off and get ready for Raceland.

Mason County had a short field most of the night mostly thanks to poor special teams play.

The sweep was there all night. Which is why I really didn't understand all the passing. They tried to run one screen but Mason covered the back comming out of the backfield and we took a sack for a big loss on it.

I was not sure if that was a screen or not or if he just got sacked. I did not see the back. Abrams runs the sweep very well. I have no clue why we did not run it more. He gained positive yards every time it was run.
You are correct Mason is very good and they had our number. Special teams were lacking. I would have liked to see 44 storm run the ball he played a lot of the game in the Russell backfield. I don't think he had any carries. I could be wrong.
