Ironton, OH is right across the river from Russell, KY. Ironton football has more history, tradition and success than Breathitt County, Pikeville, Belfry, Russell and Bell County all put together. They are the premier program in the tristate area. Part of which includes Northeastern Kentucky.
Tanks stadium is a historical land mark and a trendsetter. It was under roof long before Breathitt County's school was even built.

Above is the home side under roof. Locker rooms are below the home side bleachers. It was a terrible place to have to come out of with all those rabid Ironton fans yelling at you. Terrible but pretty cool too. I've never played or coached in another place like it.

Above is the visitors side. Yes that is a press box on the visitors side. This picture is from 1982. Outside of the old fashioned facemasks and neckrolls not much has changed.

Above is an shot from 3,000 feet. No, its not the one with the track around it. It is just below that to the left.
Here is a link to the school website that gives you a nice history of Tank Stadium. Its worth the look. No team in Eastern Kentucky matches the history of this place.

Again we talking about schools in KY. Also it states that they were a semi professional team, not high school originally.
Was it built for the semi pro team, then given to the high school? Breathitt's was built specifically for the high school football team, not a semi pro team then handed down.

The thread topic makes no mention of KY schools only. Since Belfry played Ironton for many years plenty of KY fans know of Ironton...
The Tank opened in 1926 so I highly doubt these bleachers were built for a semi-pro team in the 20's or 30's...

It said that it was built for the semi pro team it had that joined the American football league in 1930, so i would say it was built for the semi pro team. I would guess that after the city got rid of the team they made it into a high school field, unlike Breathitt's covered stadium which was built specifically for the high school football team.

I would hope that a stadium that was home to a semi pro football team(ironton) would be better than one built just for a highschool(Breathitt).

Breathitt County's bleachers didn't always have that roof above them did they?

Why.......can you beat them?:lmao:I don't care who you are ...your point is moot.I could Google stadiums that have covered sections and pull up alot across the USA.When we HAVE to play them to get to state maybe we will consider them;but it aint going to happen.

No......after you win a few State Titles things get better.......ask Belfry.Their place used to be the worst but now it is probly the best.

Teams such as Ashland and Russell have long rivalries with Ironton. Belfry had a nice series of games with them as well.
I didn't google anything;
Maybe you should get out of Jackson and see that there is a whole great big world around you.

OK. That was my point. It was not built like that for a high school.
Other teams have won state titles. Breathitt County is not the only school to ever win a state title in football or have good facilities.

My point is that tank stadium was built for a semi pro team, then the stadium was handed down to the local high school team. Breathitt's stadium was built for the high school football team after winning there first 2 state championships.

Actually they just added the roof over the bleachers. The rest of it was already there. I'm not trying to knock Breathitt's facilities. But you guys need to stop trying to say nobody elses facilities compare.
Does it really matter how the stadiums came to be as they are now. I will say this. I have not been to a highschool stadium anywhere that matches the history or atmosphere at Tank. Most of that history comes from the Ironton Tigers.

If you want to see one of the top hs websites around go to this link. It has all kind of historical facts about the fighting TIGERS.

We are not trying to say no one else has awesome facilities. We know that we do not have the best there is. Belfry, Letcher central, and Russle all have better facilities in my opinion, along with many other schools.

So how recent did they add the roof to tank stadium? Was it 2 or 3 years back that they added it or longer?
12-27-2008, 05:16 PM
Still, Breathitt is the only team in the state and maybe America that had a [B]High School[B] stadium built for them. Tank was built for a semi pro team back in the 20's and 30's. That is what the sign said right? You also said that the roof was only added recently.
12-27-2008, 10:45 PM
The roof has been on Tanks as long as I can remember. I asked other from Ironton they all said they believe the roof was put on back in the 20's. One said it was on there for sure in the 40's.There are some more doing research on it I will post as soon as it comes in.

But according to FBALL the roof was just recently added to their bleachers.

Sorry i took that the wrong way, it sounded like you were talking about ironton. Breathitt had their stadium completed in 97' so we have had the roofed bleachers for a while. Not recently built like you suggested.

And they did just not add the roof over the bleachers at Breathitt. They got a complete makeover. The bleachers we have now were not the same ones we had before the roof. Everything was redone.
