Powell County 2009
#1
What does this Powell team look like for next season?
#2
Looks like Jesse Rose & Tim Hardy. No QB.Looks like Fraley;Flinchum;and Brewer on D.That's about it.
#3
We have a good core coming back. Bobcat is right on QB though. Very young but Coach Dubya is a good teacher. I think we have started to turn the corner. It's a shame that it took 20 yrs though....LOL

The biggest hurt will be the line, IMO. They lose their whole left side and their center. All 3 were very good linemen. Jacob Conners will be the new center, Frank Spencer will be the guard, and Dylan Davis will be the likely person to take the left tackle position. The QB of course will be the hardest position to replace. Powell still has the FB and HB in Rose, Brewer, and Wasson. Then they have a couple receivers that will return. Bobby Ward is is going to have to step up for next season. On defense, they return Rose, Brewer, and Wasson as linebackers, Hardy at CB, Branham at backer, Faulkner and Flinchum at ends. This team will do good next year.

Don't forget Fraley. The O'Shae boy will be a freshman next year.He looked tough as an 8th grader. If someone works with Flinchum on X and O's he could be a beast on D and could be a good blocking back or TE.

True. I was just stating the returning players. And I agree about Flinchum. He can be a very good player.

X's and O's is for coaches, Flinchum needs technique work which he got plenty of but will get alot more and he was a first year player last season. First step, Post and get seperation, squeeze and close, push to where the head is going-pull away, If my tackle don't block me- I never allow a free release inside- I must squeeze and close him down and know trap is coming, wrong arm the trap or kick out, defeating the double, fight across the down block, pressure keys, read keys, hat outside I must contain, push to where the hat is going(post him) and pull away( unsquaring him so he can't reach me) work to keep my outside arm outside. My tackle don't block me and hat inside I have to sqeeze and close him down not allowing a free release on my linebacker and I know right now hat inside it's trap or power. Flinchum can be good but he did get technique work and he will get alot more. Someone has been working with Flinchum for your information.

??? I don't know how you figure that's about it on defense. Almost the whole defense returns. Rose, Wasson, Brewer, Faulkner, Flinchum, Hardy, Branham, Spencer, Tipton, Frahley. All of these guys started or saw alot of P.T.

Looks like you got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning JS.I was saying he could play offense too but he doesn't understand really how to read his playbook. He needs a little extra help.Just because you know how to doesn't mean a first year kid knows how.You did good with him on D but I think he could go on both sides.

I get what your saying. Flinchum has got to be more physical and understand playing defensive end out of a 4-4 is not just flying up field on a pass rush every play. He did a good job last season for a first year player and made some big plays on D. 5 Techniques have got to attack half a man on offensive tackles. You can't just fly up field, YOU HAVE GOT TO GET HANDS ON. Flinchum needs to work on squeezing(closing) the tackle down on an inside release.
Flichum and Faulkner both are pretty good at D ends but have got to get more hands on and get more physical. Flying up field every play will get you crushed if they run power.

what kind of offensive threats will they have? i know rose and hardy.

If you plan on running a 4-4, 4-3, 3-4, you probably need to lower your schedule like your neighboring county did, if you watn to get wins.

Hey man, what's your beef with Powell? You seem to have a chip on your shoulder. Did they fire you or something? I don't get it. You seem to have alot of info. So, if that's true, then name the coaches that aren't coming back?

Flinchum had some really good hits at Breathitt this year. He was showing some real potential. I agree, needs to consistently be more physical.

1st I have heard of it. Who ain't coming back? Besides, whoever quits we will just have to find someone else capable of helping. We had people that walked away last year and did ok. Coach Dubya can get more coaches. You can count on that.
#21
WR will be key in us having a better yr. Branham, Ward, Pelfrey, will have to step up. they can do it and will be fine. Hopefully, some of the FR will come out for weightlifting, get stronger, & help out too.

No on being fired, but a guy I know was. He drove close to 100 miles round trip. You will find out the other soon enough. Can't name name's on here, that is not politically correct.

Gettin and keepin are two different issues.

We do have some 8th graders that can play some football.Such as Daniel Jones, and Tiller can run.And if trey marcum plays he will help the team.

I agree that x's and o's are for the coaches, but I also think that in order to have a great team, the players have to understand the x's and o's as well as the coaches....Kids do better when they understand why they are running a certain route or covering a certain area. There are many talented kids that play football in Kentucky, but not many understand why they are being told to do a certain thing, and that makes them less effective in my opinion...

Pirates will continue to improve. Very young next year, but more good athletes are playing football. That has been a problem in previous years.
#28
Powell Pirates will be fine next season, still growing and improving, Coach Whitaker won't let these boys fail!
#29
I think pirates will improve and have a good year. If they work hard, and pull together as a team, they will do awesome.

You are right. All this guy does is ramble about everything he's done for Powell, but, to my knowledge he is not around anymore. I don't understand what he is looking for...thanks? gas money? praise? That's what high school coaches do. You put the time and work in because you want to. He needs to get over it already.
