Your Pre-Season Mountain Top Ten
#1
Since high school football is about to start, I figured I should go ahead and make this thread. This is what I think the Pre-Season Mountain Top Ten should be:

1. Belfry
2. Johnson Central
3. Bell County
4. Breathitt County
5. Boyle County
6. Corbin
7. Sheldon Clark
8. Rockcastle County
9. Letcher County Central
10. Prestonsburg

The last 5 teams probably aren't correct. I didn't really spend very much time looking up these teams. I just kind of quickly skimmed through the teams and made up a decision.

I wasn't sure what teams would be considered in the mountain top ten. I just thought Boyd might be a Mountain team (It's just north of Lawrence County, couldn't it be considered a Mountain team?).

good prediction, I have the first 4 the same, a tie at the 5 spot with Belfry and Sheldon Clark and 7 going to Letcher Central , then back to your order 8 thru 10 . The best part about this order is most of the teams will play each other during the season.

Good rankings. You may have Hazard overrated but you can tell more after the season starts. It is hard for a Class A school to bounce back as quickly when they were hit hard with graduation like Hazard was.

Not to nitpick, but why would you rank Johnson central ahead of Belfry when the Pirates went a round further in the playoffs and defeated JC on the road at the end of the season?

I don't have sufficient info to accurately rank all of the mountain teams.

IMO

1) Bell Co.
2) Breathitt Co.
3) Johnson Central
4) Belfry

As for the rest. Who knows. I will say this - Bell Co. is enjoying one of those great periods of success where talent is flowing good. AND the new classification helps. The same goes for Johnson Central. Coach Matney has enough boys to pull from to put a heck of a team on the field year after year. He is earning EVERY dollar he makes folks. He will have them in the hunt year after year. Look for JC to give the NKY teams a run 1 in 4 years - and he WILL break through at some point. Probably just in time to come on home to Pond Creek.

Breathitt is loaded. This is their time. They have that rare couple classes that will make them special this season. Of course all of 3A has to deal with the juggernaut that is Louisville Central.

I put Belfry 4 because I feel that strongly about Coach Haywood and his ability to turn boys into men. He is that good folks. The feeder system is good enough on any given year to have them up near the top.

Letcher Central is close. Whitley County is moving in the right direction. Hazard seems to be on the right path - but its just real hard with that few kids. Pikeville is in need of a rejunivation. Perhaps it starts now. We will have to wait and see.

The rest are the rest. Prestonsburg is the one team on the outside who will occasionally look in, every 5 years or so.

As much as things change, things stay the same.

Just curious, what are the different mountain teams? I would appreciate it if someone could make a list of the schools.

There is no way that you can put Breathitt ahead of Bell County. No one in the Mountains has beat them in 2 years and the only team that has was Lex Cath in 07. The las team from the mountains that beat Bell was Rockcastle in 06 and they beat them twice.

I've looked at Bell County's schedule for the past few years and I haven't seen any other top mountain school on their schedule (except Rockcastle and Sheldon Clark, which are great programs, but they've not exactly been the "best of the mountains" in the past few years). This doesn't mean that Bell County has an easy schedule; it just means they haven't played the best teams in the mountain region. I also mentioned that I put Breathitt County slightly above Bell County.

I doubt you have ever seen Bell County play within the last couple of years, if ever. Coach Hilton has easily had the best team in the Mountains the last two years and is expected to again this year. Even some Breathitt County fans would agree that Bell County is a small step ahead of them. Bell County plays Johnson Central I believe in the third week of the season at Johnson Central, you should go check that game out and understand how for-real the Bobcats really are. I got the privilege to watch them in '07 and was convinced that there was no team in the Mountains that came close them. Take note that the game I watched was the playoff game they lost to Lexington Catholic. That's how good a Dudley Hilton coached team is. Bell County lost a couple of key players in Greer and Zachery, but they return Matt Raines who is the second best player in the Mountains to Channing Fugate in my opinion. Corey Davenport is a speed back who will leave you in the dust of your just the least bit lazy on defense.

Bell County should be the consensus number one in the WYMT Mountain Top Ten poll. Don't think this is me calling you out either, I am not trying to get on anyone's bad side. All I am saying is that Bell County is the number one team we have here in the Mountains followed by Breathitt County. The top two should be the same on everyone's list. I am a fan of neither school just to throw that out there.

I would have taken the Belfry team from two years ago all day against that Bell County team. Last year Bell was the cream of the crop, and I suspect the same will be said of this year installment as well.

Eagle Pride 90` Wrote:Did you happen to watch the Jc, Hazard game last year?

Yes it was a blow out. Im sure if they played this year it would be the same way. JC is a very good team but sub players in and out of a game that was over in the 1st quarter is ridculos. The starters shouldnt of never played any after half time.
#26
EKUAlum05 Wrote:I was talking about your rankings of how they ended up last year.

Im sorry. Belfry did go much further but i guess i ranked them higher because they played a much better team in Highlands in the playoffs and played with for a while before being over matched.

You had listed Boyle County in your original post, not Boyd. If you meant to put Boyd, of course they would be considered a mountain team. Boyle County, on the other hand, is in Danville and is definitely not in the mountains.

Breathitt at number 6? Can you explain why Corbin and Whitley are ahead of them. I can understand Bell, JCHS and Belfry, but Corbin and Whitley is just kinda crazy for me.
