mrsportsfan Wrote:For the same reason we had blistering temperatures last year and no rain, so no water. We had plenty of rain this year so we will probably be back to a drought next year or cold temperatures next year. There is nothing wrong with coal, you just have to burn it more effectively. If you live in Pike Co., you have lost a loved one, know someone who has, or people now that are dying from cancer. All the sludge that was dumped and is being dumped in Grundy to come to our drinking supply, is the one of the major causes. When the paper prints that you shouldn't eat more than a few fish a year out of fishtrap, doesn't that ring a bell? Don't eat the fish, but here drink the water. If there is anybody on these boards who works with the EPA and knows the cancer rate in Pike Co., I would sure be interested. It is off the charts. There is so much chlorine in our water coming out of our faucets, that if you run a bath, and then walk in the room, the fumes are overpowering.
It's not just Pike, it's all of EKY. Ask yourselves what we all have in common, our water. Water that coal runoff has inhibited for generations. A doctor at Markey cancer center told me when my mom got cancer, said EKY has an alarmingly high cancer rate, and blamed it on the water. Coal people don't care about that, as long as they live at their higher standards.

That is a load of bull. Maybe some people in the coal industry live at high standards. For others it's their only way of life, the only thing they know how to do, and the only thing that puts bread on the table. "Quit whining about the government and go get a job", right? Give it a rest. :eyeroll:

Haha, talking about me skipping on topics? What about your old statement? "Why should Obama do anything to help this area when we didn't vote for him as a majority?".

Come on RV.

Like I thought. Fact is, by you skipping the question, you could give a crap less if coal runoff getting in the water is upping cancer in EKY.

Quote:EPA: Higher Cancer Risk for Kentuckians Due to Coal Ash Waste Frankfort, KY – Environmental groups are reacting to news The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, for seven years, not released information documenting health risks for people, animals and fish near coal-fired power plant landfills and waste ponds. An analysis of the research shows Kentucky is home to several high-risk sites where EPA knew for years that the cancer risks were much higher

Eric Schaeffer, director the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP), is a former EPA official. He says neighboring communities show higher cancer and non-cancer health risks near the facilities due to a long list of toxins seeping into groundwater.

"Unlined waste ponds can result in exposures up to nine times the federal standard for lead, and there are additional toxic metals that exceed thresholds, which are generally established to protect people."

Those liberal EPA people, they hid these facts from us. The EPA is out to kill coal by hiding cancer facts.

Your extensive study leading to the conclusion that coal causes cancer in Eastern Kentucky consists of some doctor from Lexington telling you that is the case? Are you for real?

He is the leading doctor at Markey in research on cancer, you know something he and others don't? Dispute the claims with facts or go back to your hole. It's a researched fact that coal leads to cancer. Type in Yahoo search, "coal causes cancer" and "coal doesn't cause cancer", and see what you get.
#43
Good lord.... get this back on topic!!! The thread title doesn't mention doctors OR cancer in it so please, go another direction on this one or start yourselves another thread!!!

You haven't provided any "facts" to dispute. I know all kinds of doctors around here, and they don't think coal causes cancer. More liberal garbage. If I believed that crap, I would get my family out of here at ASAP!!!!:please:

The first one I read warned that burning coal in your house increased your chance of getting lung cancer, but the increased risk was diminished with proper ventilation...

I'm sorry, I have to quit talking to you now. Get your family out of here before coal makes them sick!!!!!!! LOL

I Agree With You, All SomeOne Has to Do Would Be To Look At This Word.

Coal worker's pneumoconiosis

Definition
Coal worker's pneumoconiosis is a lung disease caused by breathing in dust from coal, graphite, or man-made carbon for a long time.

Alternative Names
Black lung disease; Pneumoconiosis; Anthrosilicosis

Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Coal worker's pneumoconiosis occurs in 2 forms: simple and complicated (progressive massive fibrosis, or PMF).

Your risk of developing the disease depends on how long you have been around the coal dust. Most people with this disease are older than 50. Smoking does not increase your risk of developing this disease, but it may have an additional harmful effect on the lungs.

You People Are So Stubborn To Realize That We Have To Change, We Cant Keep Living The Way We Are, The Human Race Advances Always Has And Always Will, Do You Really Believe We Will Be Coal Mining In 50 Years?
#53
^^^Let's advance far enough to not capitalize every word before we predict the future of coal.

China and India and all the developing countries will burn every lump of coal they can get their hands on until all the coal is gone. And let the whining liberal crybabies in the USA have a blackout for 5 minutes and they will be screaming at the government for causing an energy shortage. You people need to quit listening to your idiot-box TVs and believing all the far left crap that is being dumped on you...

There you go again with resorting to the childish antics of name calling. You have no facts to present, just stubborn, uninformed opinions.

PS. My info doesn't come from an "idiot-box tv" it comes from science books, and years of study, maybe you should try that. And if anyone on here gets the majority of their info from an "idiot-box tv" it would most likely be those on the right, Fox News has spread a virus across this country with their ignorant broadcast, and it has affected most of you on the right.

I dont know why you all cant understand that no one is saying that we have to stop using coal tomorrow, we just want to start developing alternative energy sources. You keep using remarks like, "let them freeze", or "Go without power", can you stop with scare tactics, and actually present something meaningful. Coal will be gone eventually, and the process of strip mining cant continue at this pace much longer, we have to get new fuel sources, and that is the path we are taking, get used to it.
#56
Continue at what pace? Thanks to our wonderful government the unemployment rate right now is higher than it's ever been! The mining industry has suffered huge blows but as long as the "big man" has his pockets lined, I guess no one else is worried about it. Mr. Blankenship makes some good points in his discussion, I just wish some would view with an open mind INSTEAD of tunnel vision!

Just about everything we do , manufacture, mine , or what ever it may be , someone comes out and says it causes cancer.

What about the guy that runs a rock drill when they build roads? He gets the same thing as the guy who runs a drill when they mine coal. Ever hear of silicosis? Does this mean we outlaw building roads?

What about the people and the health hazards that come from mining iron ore, bauxite(aluminum), gold, silver, copper, gypsum, diamonds, emeralds, rubys, and on and on and on and on and on. Do we stop mining this stuff too?

Hey, if it's in the ground, then that means we take a shovel and dig it out of the ground, right?

Ask any doctor or scientist and they will tell you everything we do causes cancer. Working around chemicals causes cancer, smoking causes cancer, too much drinking causes cancer, grilling your food over charcoal causes cancer, naturally occuring radon from the ground causes cancer, Nuclear radiation causes cancer, burning wood causes cancer, Standing too long in the sunlight causes cancer. And this list just goes on and on and on. I dont understand this whole idiotic drift into this discussion.

Unless any of you are willing to take the diamond studded gold, silver or platinum rings, watches, and earings from your body; If you are not willing to park your vehicles (because they are made of steel, plastic, fiberglass and rubber); If you are not willing to kick the tobacco habit; If you are not willing to abstain from the 6pack habit; If yoiu are not willing to stay out of the tanning beds; If you are not willing to live in a house with no sheetrock; If you are not willing to throw your cans of insect spray away; If you are not willing to live in a house without copper wiring and plumbing; If you choose to not have electricity in your homes; If you are not wanting anything you own to have a coat of paint on it; If you are not willing to ......etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.....THEN YOU ARE ALL JUST HYPOCRITES, and should just shut up.....period.

You'll jump on coal and the producers , but you dont say a word about any of the other stuff which is much more dangerous and environmentaly unfriendly than mining coal.

This is all stuff that one would expect from someone with the mentality of DW, but I am amazed at the ignorance of some of you others.

For a bunch of people that are claiming to be so intelligent, the level of ignorance, hypocrisy, and just plain old stupidity is astounding.

I can promise you that JP is a heavy weight when it comes to discussing what he does on here. Ever hear of someone that is able to carry a big stick? Then just wait till you get a load of ole JP!!!!! lol....Quite frankly, you would be amazed. You my friend, are what we call a lightweight in these type of discussions.

So far your big claim to fame is to make intelligent statements such as "elk are not a natural species" to this area. I suggest you get those science books back out and burn some more midnight oil. Ooops , scratch that, I forgot you dont use as much electricity as the rest of us..:eyeroll:
