I'll let you take that one where you are wanting to go with it. If you have a kid over there you know what's going on and from the sounds of things tonight, they were great. Ready to see the boys on the field Friday night. Good luck Tigers.

I just don't understand why people are quitting this early in the season, especially seniors. When the group I played with during high school was in middle school we won a grand total of 4 games out of about the 20+ we played. We stuck together and eventually won a Regional Title, only to get beat out by NCC in the Final Four. When Daniel Pugh come up as a freshman he took over for Shane Simpkins at QB, not much was said then by players or fans. Everyone could see that Coach LeMaster was looking to mix things up to get something clicking and the fans as well as the players knew it. The Tigers offense has struggled this year, no question about that, maybe Coach Kinner thought the current QB could be a better asset to the team at another position to use his speed to help get the ball rolling. The defense isn't much better and that all comes from youth as well as the competition they have played this early in the season. The Daniels kid could be a better throwing QB than the former, and in their district if they can pass then they can beat a lot of teams because hardly anyone does it and hardly anyone can defend it. When times get tough, you tighten up your chin strap, put another notch in the belt, suck it up and go out with your blood pumping to take a stand and make it a point to improve every day. The Tigers are very young and could be the next Regional Champion team to go along with the many other past outstanding Tiger teams. I hope all this was, was just frustration and they will see the light at the end of the tunnel and come back out. Not everyone is going to be as big as Lawrence Co. Not everyone is going to be the quality of a Prestonsburg. Eventually you will face teams and say, "Hey these guys aren't anywhere near the competition that we have already faced" and put a pounding on someone like they have taken early on this year. It really disappoints me to see the former school that I represented not do well, but you have to have trust in the scheme and Coach Kinner, and I have that. He will get things back to the way they were in the late 90's and early 00's. It's hard enough to beat a team on Friday nights, but it makes it even more difficult when you have to win the game on the field while trying to please the players and everyone else. It's a team sport. Everyone has a role that they need to do and if you aren't playing then you just have to wait your time. Friday nights is totally different from playing on a Saturday afternoon. I had the time of my life playing with my friends, representing my school and community, more so than I did in college. There is nothing else in the world to describe the feeling you get when playing high school football. The memories you make right now will last you a lifetime.

Comparing Daniels and Pugh is like comparing a mini van to a mustang. And it wasn't because of passing abilities.

Pugh did not take over for Simpkins without a glitch. Pugh came into summer camp wanting to play football, Simpkins was not present and didn't decide to come out until the week before the first game. By this time the offense had been ran by Pugh and the reigns turned over. Btw, great post and very true words.

If I remember correctly, didnt Simpkins get hurt his senior year? I believe it was a knee injury? And then Pugh took over. Seems like it was in the Apple Bowl actually. Not sure though.

I knew the whole situation BB, but when a senior comes back out most would expect him to jump back into the position he was at the year before without much being said. Coach LeMaster stuck with his intuition and let Pugh stay at the reigns. People knew. It worked out pretty well for the Tigers in the long run, they took their bumps early but ended up being darn good later on. Thanks for the comments at the end big guy. I hope all is going well for you.

Pugh was the starter from day one. Simpkins played RB and split a little. His injury did occur in the Apple Bowl though.

Maybe right now RR he's a Chevy Lumina but could later progress into a Saleen. Pugh took his bumps early like everyone else but things paid off in the long run. I'm sure you know that things aren't as black and white as they may seem, passing may have had nothing to do with it. I just feel that a change was made to better the team. If the young guns stick through this tough time, glory will follow. Have trust, that's all anyone can ask.

Ridge Runner Wrote:Heard the rumor today and drove by the field this evening.

From what I saw, the Tigers have demoted their SR QB D. Brown to WR and promote FR QB M. Daniels to the starting role. I also spoke with a few people there and found out that 5 starters quit. Brett Reynolds, Trent Burchett, Timmy Sublett, PJ Pack and Jimmy Judd. And the only new player I was told that was out, was a kid named Seth Daniels. Who hasn't played Highschool football before. So you gain 1 with no experience and loose 5 who have played their whole life. So YES this is BIG news.
Paintsville hasn't had a true QB since Chas Harmon. Pugh, Vanhoose, Humpfrey, Deaton and now Brown were very good athletes that were pit at QB because there was not much choice. Pugh thrived only because of his hard work and determination along with the fact that he was one of the best athletes ever to come out of Paintsville. So....moving Brown from QB to WR is not a demotion. Although...if it were me, I would put Brown and Doderer in a split backfield. That would take a whole lot of pressure off of any QB. We have no real use for Wide-outs IMO, cause without an arm to get the ball down the field, I could cover Randy Moss! Seams drags and screens are about the only things I would throw. And very seldom at that! Straight ahead blocking for the young line and dives, leads and an occassional cross or mis-direction. Then after the Backers start cheating up a little.....A seam to the tight end or maybe a drag to the WR! That would be about it until we proved we could do those things on a consistant basis. Oh BTW....It might help things a little if we cut down on the penalties and hung onto the DANG ball!
As far as the ones that quit....though I could never condone quitting, I just hope it was the kids decision and not just talked into it or forbiden to play something they love.

It seems like there's some trouble in Tigerville!

With six quiting the team and Rice being unable to play; what's the point spead now?
#44
There isn't any trouble in "Tigerville". Not sure where you are getting your info but there aren't 6 players that quit and they weren't all seniors as someone previously commented. 3 players quit yesterday b/c they didn't agree with playing time and 1 player quit over the weekend because his heart wasn't in it. If you talk to the current players, things are going great and they are happy with the changes that have been made. That's what is important in the whole situation. I just hope those players who quit did so because they wanted to, not because of pressures from their parents. The Jude boy did NOT quit as someone previously posted and there were a couple new kids coming out for the team as of yesterday. Whether or not a kid is a "chevy, cadillac, or porsche" doesn't really matter. What should matter is that you support your team whether they win or lose, whether your child plays or stands on the sideline, and whether you agree or disagree with the coaching decisions. In my opinion if you can't do those things, the team if better off without you. Best of luck to the Tigers this season. They have a very bright future ahead of them and a great chance to win the district this year. Good luck against Magoffin!

Ok, so you had 4.0 players quit after the first game.

Did they contribute in any way to the team? Will their not being there, create holes that have to filled on either side of the ball?

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR FOOTBALL PARENTS

1 Be positive with your son; let him know he is accomplishing something by simply being part of the team. Don't put him down.

2 Don't offer excuses for him if he is not playing. There is usually a reason for it. Encourage him to work hard and do his best.

3 Don't put down his coaches, etc. Remember, the Coach respresents the Boss, the Authority, the Parent, the Teacher, the Law, etc. If you are constantly bad-mouthing your son's coaches, how can you expect your son to play for him? You are teaching him to be a complainer, not a doer.

4 Encourage your son to follow the team rules. Whether he is a first-stringer or a seventh-stringer, players must follow rules pertaining to curfew, drinking, smoking, girlfriends, promptness, and school. Football is a very demanding sport and coaches must concern themselves with a player's off-the-field activities in order to get the maximum physical and mental performance out his players.

5 Insist on good grades. Check the number of hours your son spends on homework. It is the duty of the parent to see that their son is working in the classroom (no matter how good a player he is, if he doesn't have good grades, he doesn't get in college - times have changed). Eliminate use of the car, phone calls, television, internet, etc. This cuts in on study time.

6 Don't develop envy toward players because you don't like their parents, etc. Don't try to live your life vicariously through your son. Football is a kid's game - let them play it. Don't show any animosity or jealousy to any of your son's teammates because they carry the ball more, score more touchdowns, or even get a write-up in the paper. This type of envy rubs off on your son and it can devastate a team. Who cares who scores, etc. as long as everyone does their job to the fullest.

7 Don't be a know-it-all. The coaches work with the players 12 months a year and they know what each kid can do and what he cannot do. As a fan, you are entitled to scream your head off, but don't become belligerent and arrogant toward players. They are amateurs.

8 Insist on your son's respect for team rules, school rules, game officials, and sportsmanship. Don't let him make fools out of his family, school, and team by some uncalled-for gesture or incident whereby he will bring shame. Self respect begins with self control.

9 Encourage your son to improve his self image by believing in himself. A good beginning would be to encourage him to have faith. Great players have a lot of faith in themselves and others.

10 Encourage your son to play for the love of the game - not a scholarship. This alleviates a lot of pressure for a young person. Scholarships are something that are in the hands of college recruiters. Players become selfish, etc. Insist on unselfishness. Usually, good things happen to the unselfish, hard-working athlete.

I'm just putting this up just incase it was some parents that forced their child to quit.

It was their second game. Read up on the team a little before you make comments, it would eliminate some of these questions to get you caught up to speed. With them not being there, it will allow someone who does want to be there to fill in. I'd rather have a guy who wants to block, make a tackle, catch a pass, and be a contributor to the team in any way possible than someone just going through the motions. It's all about heart, pride, and contributing to the grander goal of the team, not just a way to pass time until basketball or baseball season.

But I was curious about what positions the kids played or were they bench warmers and made no contributions to the team?

OK here we go. I swore I would never get on here again. But, This IS Bryan Sublett. So I just thought I would set the record straight from this part of the equation.
YES, my son quit. Did I want him to quit? NO Did I try and talk him out of quitting? YES
He said his heart wasn't in it and he wasn't happy. So I told him to do whatever makes him happy. Because if he isn't happy it can hurt the rest of the team. So he quit.
Do I think that maybe him playing FOUR Varsity Sports may have been a little much on him? CERTAINLY!
Do I feel he was don wrong? YES
Does he think he was done wrong? YES and so do the other at least 30 people who have come to me and said the same thing.
Do I feel it is right to call kids "Fill in the Balnks!" Most def. not.
Am I gonna yank my kid out of the school? NO, that would be crazy. He loves it there and starts in 2 other Varsity Sports and should play quite a bit in another this season.
Now, to say that all he was doing was just waiting for another sport to come around is ludicrous. The kid has always given 100% for any coach he has had no matter where they have played him. Coach Kinner even said this himself. No, he isn't a superstar and He's not a crybaby or a quitter. BUT, He has NEVER quit at any sport since he started playing them at the age of 4.
This is all I have to say and am going to say about this. The main reason I got off this site was because people need to practice what they preach. A lot of people get on he and cast stones at people and then other people get on here and assume they know what is going on and turn right around and end up doing the same freaking thing.

As far who quit and who didn't. Guess what kids talk. And I would say that prolly 95% of the things posted on here are from what a kid has told an adult.

Now that being said. My son has a big game himself coming up Thursday night as he travels across the creek to take on JC in a big District Soccer match.

Good Luck this weekend to both teams and may the best team win.

Bryan never once did I single your kid out. Show me one post where I singled him out. Just making the general statement. If his heart's not it in and he's playing 3 other sports then yeah I 'd say he is fairly occupied. Not once did I say that he inparticular, was doing this in as a filler sport. Lot's of kids do that you know. I just think it's crap that you take a general statement and think that I put everything in those posts just directly to your kid. If his heart isn't in it, so be it, why keep staying miserable when you have other things that you like to do better. Right? Sounds to me like he made his own mind up and you can't knock a kid for that. I remember the day I stood up to my old man when I didn't want to play baseball anymore, wasn't an easy thing to do. I played with kids that didn't care in high school, heck some didn't come out until their senior year trying to get the starting position, that's where I get a lot of my beliefs from. They didn't give a hoot about the game or the team, they were just there for the jersey and to say they played it in high school. I really do wish your boy would've stuck it out, kinda suprised when RR mentioned he wasn't on the team anymore, he's a well rounded athlete and after getting the hang of things with a few more games, everything would've come more easy to him. It's a big transition from dominating middle school to being overshadowed in high school. The same can be said about me when I went to college or moved up from the middle school team. Every thing takes time, maybe next year he'll give it another shot, if not at least he can say he gave it a shot which is a lot more than other people can say. Who knows, you may have the next Freddy Adu on your hands. I've known you too long and you should know that I would never single out your kid in a public forum, as well as any other kid, just making a general statement.

I would also like to apologize publicly to OTH and those whom I offended. That was NOT my intent. I guess I just chose my words poorly and was alittle miss informed. I am a true Blue Fan. Always have been and always will be. I thought I was just passing along some information to everyone. Not once did I speak down on a kid or any of his teammates. I have no kids in this fight......at least not for quite awhile anyway....lol. Again.....HOOK and your Tiger friends I AM SORRY!

Now, back to the subject though.

I "Heard" today that 2 more players quit. Is this true? Who? And if so..could someone pleeeease tell me what is going on?

As Dale said. This was a very good young group of kids.

AND AGAIN....My fault on poor choice of words...SORRY.

Tell Timmy I said good Luck Thursday Hook!

If you dont think Paintsville will put 11 out there that will be well coached and play their guts out then think again. This will be a dog fight. To my knowledge MC has never beaten Paintsville on the grass. I dont think they have played each other since the HUGE brawl in the early 90's (after the game). MC kids are extremely excited about playing this game. They will be geared up, as will the tigers. It has the making for alot of electricty. Should be a fun atmosphere on Friday. Im getting reports that MC will be very short handed as well. That kid that rushed for 230 last week is out as well as their top receiver. Dont kill the messenger.

DALE Wrote:TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR FOOTBALL PARENTS

Outstanding Post and should apply to all high school sports

I talked to some MC players through the week about their last game against South Floyd..they mentioned that they didnt execute that well but it was simply that SF was simply that bad...interesting take from the players mouths...

DALE Wrote:Bryan never once did I single your kid out.

At least he tried to do everything in his power to raise you right.
