I think the loss to Belfry in 1989 really helped Pikeville win their 3rd in a row. They didn't take well to being on the losing side of the scoreboard.
I don't think there is any doubt about that. That loss refocused Pikeville and got their heads out of the clouds enough for Hillard to coach them. Heck, they didn't need a lot of coaching. They rolled from that point on. It's interesting, but Belfry held their own 2 of the 3 championship years for Pikeville. In 1987, Pikeville spanked the Pirates, who were rebuilding a bit after back to back state runners-up. However, in 1988 it was a relatively close game, I think like 24-14 after it was canceled on a Friday and moved to Saturday. Then of course the 1989 Belfry win. That '89 Belfry team went on the the state semis where they lost a hard fought game on the road at Highlands.

Went to the Belfry/Highlands game in '89 in the frigid cold, as Pikeville played B'wood on Sat. May be biased, but there was no doubt in my mind Belfry was the better team vs. Highlands and should have won by a couple of scores.

Quarterback keeper stopped at the goalline... I was 7 years old and was sick for a month after my dad took me to that game. Belfry should have been State Champs that season.

1982 Highlands vs Cov Cath. This was a playoff game, but everybody knew the winner of this game would go on to win the state championship. The game was a nail bitter to the end. Highlands went on to win the AAA championship.

Since we are going old school, sstack, 1979 Belfry at Highlands. The game which put Belfry on the statewide map imo. 14-8 Pirates in the state semis.

1969 harlan vs lynch...ended in a tie,...lynch gets to playoffs on strength of schedule and wins state...sad to say but harlan was probably the 2nd best team in the state that year with no losses and 1 tie.

its been a while but the pike county bowl where pike central beat shelby valley in like triple overtime 40 something to 40 something.
if john johnson would'nt have otten cramps it would have been a shelby valley victory, all in all a GREAT game.
and shelby valley lost to grundy on a last second hail mary...was a dandy.

That's correct, 13-6 in OT. The regular season score was the same, just not in OT. There was a huge crowd at that playoff game and I doubt anyone there forgets it. Just one of many good games between these two schools.

Get over it! Highlands followed court orders the entire season, KHSAA is the one that screwed up and did not make a decision until the night of the state game. Highlands would still have won without the player in question, they were not a one pony team.

I agree. Im from bell co. and im sick of hearing people talk about that. If mitchell wasnt in the game, there would have been another player right there in his spot making those plays. As for the best game ive seen....Ive got 4 bell games in mind.
Bell/Rockcastle regular season 05. Bell down most of the game come back on more than 300 yards passing by kyle nelson. wins late in the 4th on a questionable qb sneak play.
The last 3 games of the 08 state championship run. The game against knox central, boyle and bullit east were all nail biters.

I would have to go with the 1990 Bell Co/Cov Cath playoff game. If I remember correctly, the game went into overtime and Bell had scored. Cov Cath needed a touchdown to prolong the game. Dallas Skidmore met Marty Moore in the whole and Dallas won the battle. The place went nuts. Bell lost the next week to Ashland in the semi-finals. The 1990 team is arguably the best team that Bell has ever had (talent wise), even though they didn't win it all.

Highlands had a player named Marty Moore, sure you have the right name or team? Highlands Moore went on to a nice run in the NFL.

'95...3 legit pass interferences and a short flag was the winning TD route. Both teams were 6-0 at the time.

Pikeville had a long touchdown run called back or it never would have gotten to Belfry's final drive. Belfry had a long way to go and they threw a long bomb. There were multiple Pikeville defenders back and one Belfry receiver and it was a jump ball and Pikeville intercepts, game over, right? wrong. Interference on Pikeville. Next pass, incomplete. Questionable interference at best. Next play. Interference no doubt. A Pikeville defender wiped out a Belfry receiver across the middle and left time for one more play. Final play, a pass to Brad Hatfield in the corner of the endzone toward the concession stand end at Vipperman. Then I believe Mike Hardin booted the extra point. Field was crappy and muddy and that was it. I watched all the last few plays from about 10 feet away on the sideline. Pirates got an early Christmas present that night, but Oh well. The Pikeville DB who wiped out the Belfry receiver on the final interference call was none other than the late Brent Coleman. I remember asking him why he done that after wed just got 2 DPI penalties in a row? Ill never forget his reply. "The only way they werent going to throw a flag is if he caught it. I wasnt going to let him catch it." LOL!

1) 2002 4A Championship - Trinity 59, Male 56
What a display. The collection of talent on the field and the way they performed was
a sight to see.
2) 2001 AA Region 1 Championship - Glasgow 31, Trigg County 24 (2 OT)
So many big plays in this game. Tony Driver (Glasgow) and Devron Wadlington (Trigg)
put on a show.
3) 1995 Regular Season - Hopkinsville 53, Leslie County 0
Tim Couch came to Hoptown, and this game looked like a dandy. Hoptown's defense
went nuts. I believe it was 35-0 or 41-0 by halftime. Couch was pulled after the
second series of the 3rd quarter after going 9-25 for around 90 yards and 3 or 4
INTs. This Hoptown team featured Miguel Merritt (Alabama) among others. Neither
before this game or since have I seen a good team get manhandled like Leslie did.
They just flat out got taken to the woodshed.

Thanks Stack. I'm starting to show my age. I had 2 different players and teams running together. Whoever it was that Dallas met in the hole, it was a great moment in Bell Co. football.

Have to disagree. He was responsible for all of the HHS scores and forced 2 fumbles, 1 of which was fumble return for TD, the other was on the 1 yard line with Robbins going in for the score. As a team HHS has 150 yards of offense he had 120 of the 150. On that night they were a 1 pony show.
(That 04 team was 1 of the better teams at Bell, along with 90, 93, 95, 03, and of course 08. That goes to show you the best team(s) don't always win. The 91 team got hot at the right time and played near perfect football in the end)
08 Boyle @ Bell would have to rank somewhere on that list.

2001 Paintsville 28 Pikeville 6 Why is this the best game I have ever seen? Simple. It's the only time I have seen Paintsville beat Pikeville.
2005- Paintsville 28 Lynn 27 Paintsville was up 28-0 at the half and had to block a PAT to preserve the win in the second round of the playoffs. Daniel Pugh had a QB scramble for about 70 yards for a TD as time expired right before the half. No one figured it would be the game deciding TD.
2001- Paintsville 27 Middlesboro 22 Second round of playoffs at M'boro. The Yellowjackets had future UK LB/DE D. White and he was a load to tackle. I still consider this win the game "that you probably should not win but did" in Paintsville's recent history.
Other: 2008 Highlands 35 JCHS 21 Score does not indicate how good of a football game this was. 7-7 at the half. Passing when one team was on offense, smash mouth belly option when the other was on offense. Neither team could really stop the other between the 20's, turnovers late killed JCHS.
