Best Game You've Ever Seen?
#61
Udon'tKnowMe Wrote:2001 Paintsville 28 Pikeville 6 Why is this the best game I have ever seen? Simple. It's the only time I have seen Paintsville beat Pikeville.

2005- Paintsville 28 Lynn 27 Paintsville was up 28-0 at the half and had to block a PAT to preserve the win in the second round of the playoffs. Daniel Pugh had a QB scramble for about 70 yards for a TD as time expired right before the half. No one figured it would be the game deciding TD.

2001- Paintsville 27 Middlesboro 22 Second round of playoffs at M'boro. The Yellowjackets had future UK LB/DE D. White and he was a load to tackle. I still consider this win the game "that you probably should not win but did" in Paintsville's recent history.

Other: 2008 Highlands 35 JCHS 21 Score does not indicate how good of a football game this was. 7-7 at the half. Passing when one team was on offense, smash mouth belly option when the other was on offense. Neither team could really stop the other between the 20's, turnovers late killed JCHS.

Best game I ever played in or was part of. I think the best part of it was that I finally got to play defense, not just offense. And you're right, Durrell White was a load but we held him in check, the other RB, I think his last name was Schnieder, he was nearly unstoppable.

rayboy55 Wrote:I would have to go with the 1990 Bell Co/Cov Cath playoff game. If I remember correctly, the game went into overtime and Bell had scored. Cov Cath needed a touchdown to prolong the game. Dallas Skidmore met Marty Moore in the whole and Dallas won the battle. The place went nuts. Bell lost the next week to Ashland in the semi-finals. The 1990 team is arguably the best team that Bell has ever had (talent wise), even though they didn't win it all.

same thing can be said for that 90 ashland team who won the hole thing

EKUAlum05 Wrote:Quarterback keeper stopped at the goalline... I was 7 years old and was sick for a month after my dad took me to that game. Belfry should have been State Champs that season.

Actually the 4th and inches took place around Highlands 15 yd line with under 3 minutes on the clock. During the timeout, preceding the play, Haywood almost elected for the field goal. He decided otherwise and the rest is history. I cant remember that years Belfry team ever being stopped on a 4th inches the whole year and Haywood made the correct decision. The line got completely blew up on that play and Belfry's QB actually slipped or we may be talking about that years Belfry team as the best Pirate team ever. FWIW, EKUAlum05, i wish i was only 7 years old then, being that young i might not remember everything about that game and i could forget about it.

Evarts 8- Pikeville 7 1990 Regional finals at Pikeville. Pikeville had won three consecutive state championships before this loss if my memory is correct. Another good one was Evarts 31- Lynch 19. This was the only game Lynch lost that year. They were of course state champions. Evarts big upset of Corbin in 1991 was another good one. Scott Russell had 200 yards rushing for Evarts.

big blu 2 u Wrote:1969 harlan vs lynch...ended in a tie,...lynch gets to playoffs on strength of schedule and wins state...sad to say but harlan was probably the 2nd best team in the state that year with no losses and 1 tie.

Evarts also was as good as Lynch and Harlan that year. Evarts beat Lynch 31-19. However Evarts played with the big boys in those days. They were AA when the only schools in the state that were AAA were in Louisville.

Trinity's win over Cincinnati Elder at Ryle High School was a great one. That's the only game Elder loss that year. They were Ohio's Division 1 state champion and GCL champions.
#70
i have two, they both happened in 2005:

1.Ironton 27 Ashland 26 - Ashland lost on a missed FG attempt as time expired.
2.Bellaire 34 Ironton 28 3-OT - Regional Final - Peden Stadium - Athens, OH

I would have to say the best game I have witnessed was 42-14 Alcoa over Bell County. That game was well worth the five dollars it cost to get in the game.

ROCKSOLID69 Wrote:2004 Rockcastle County and Lincoln County Game. the score was 12-13 Lincoln on top with 3 seconds left. When Rockcastle Through a **** mary pass for about 70 yards to win the game 18-13. The win gave Former Rockcastle County coach And Current Harlan County Coach Tom Larkey his 200th Win

That was pretty special. I also remember the Rockcastle-Covington Catholic game, where the German kicker from Rockcastle kicked the field goal to send Rockcastle to their first state title game!

I hope I had all that info right, :lmao:

2003 Boyle County 22 Highlands 21 in the regular season.

(Boyle ripped Highlands 44-10 later that year for their 5th consecutive state title.)

Evarts Vs. Pikeville 1990
Evarts ends the streak of 3 straight State Championships
Pikeville ahead 7-0 with 2 Min left. Evarts scores and gets the 2pt conv. and the win

97 Breathitt vs Lawrence County

lcgrad2002 Wrote:I enjoyed watching the Lawrence County and Sheldon Clark game back in the late 90's when Gerad Parker was there. I think the Bulldogs lost by two points I think 18-16 or something like that on a last second field goal as time was running out and the field goal was blocked. I think Ben Delong played for the Cardinals then, they were really good.

yes i remember that i was in 3rd grade lol, parker lined up for the game winning fg, but I think it was a bad snap or hold and he missed wide right and we lossed 16-14, but overall it was a great game to watch

Yes i was only one yr old, but Coach Goldsmith told me a 1000 times about it on recruit trips lol It sounded like a great game and he also told me about the Lawrence county vs Mayfeild and how he wished he would have had a kicker lol
#78
I worked with a guy that played for Lawrence County against Mayfield. I didn't get to see it, but I heard it was a great game. Wish I could find it on tape.

yeah i was on the team that went to mayfield, great game, but a long trip

NEWARKCATHOLICFAN Wrote:The Male/Trinity state final.
59-56 final I believe was the score.

AMEN!!! Brohm vs. Bush! Out of all that scoring there was (I believe) only one turnover in that game. Bush threw an INT with about 1:30 to go in the
4th quarter. What a way to send out Old Cardinal Stadium. That was the last football game ever played there.

1999 Middlesboro vs. Breathitt County -- MBoro wins 42-41
2007 Trinity vs. St.X -- Trinity wins 34-28 in OT to win state title
2002 Breathitt Co. vs. Russell --- Breathitt wins 28-27 in OT to go to finals
2000 Rockcastle Co. vs. Sheldon Clark -- Rock wins 7-6 in region finals ***hardest hitting game I have ever seen***

I'm sure there are others but those quickly come to mind.

I will never forget the Lawrence County fans chanting 42 and 1 at the end of the Breathitt Co game. LC snapped the 42 game winning streak of Breathitt Co. If you missed this game, it was truely one of the best high school football games you will ever witness. Nick Meadows played out of his mind.

I have watched the video of that game. How hard did it rain?!?!?!? Beautiful Louisa weather!

You guys have got me "wondering" about my Top 10 mountain games. That will be the next video blog. Great discussion!

I remember I was in 8th grade when this game was played and I stayed under an umbrella the entire game. It was great atmosphere. Jason Michaels and Charlie Vinson, Nick Meadows were playing above their heads. It was an "awe" struck feeling to see the seconds countdown and to see LC victorious. Breathitt County was almost unbeatable then. The best game I have ever seen in person.:popcorn:

I'm gonna have to throw in Breathitt and Pburg this year

HailPikeville Wrote:LOL! The first flag was on fourth down with a jump ball between two Pikeville defenders who had position and a Belfry receiver who came over their backs. Pikeville intercepted and interference called on Pikeville. The single worst call I have ever seen. The refs did everything except kick the winning extra point in that game. It led to the famous "They cheat at Belfry" quote by Hillard Howard which was printed in the paper, lol...

bucslover68 Wrote:This was a game that was a gift to Belfry, and people know how I love the Pirates. Pikeville led 6-0 and that's the way the game should have ended. Pikeville had a long touchdown run called back or it never would have gotten to Belfry's final drive. Belfry had a long way to go and they threw a long bomb. There were multiple Pikeville defenders back and one Belfry receiver and it was a jump ball and Pikeville intercepts, game over, right? wrong. Interference on Pikeville. Next pass, incomplete. Questionable interference at best. Next play. Interference no doubt. A Pikeville defender wiped out a Belfry receiver across the middle and left time for one more play. Final play, a pass to Brad Hatfield in the corner of the endzone toward the concession stand end at Vipperman. Then I believe Mike Hardin booted the extra point. Field was crappy and muddy and that was it. I watched all the last few plays from about 10 feet away on the sideline. Pirates got an early Christmas present that night, but Oh well.

Memories might be fading a little bit on both of your parts. The first pass was not intercepted, and was the only questionable call of the drive. Belfry wouldn't have been in that situation had Brent Coleman not spiked the ball for an unsportsmanlike conduct foul when Pikeville should have punted the ball to seal the win anyway. And the other two pass interferences could have just as easily been called pass interference with unnecessary roughness or unsportansmanlike conduct penalties, too.

I'll grant Pikeville glory-days fanatics this, without the first pass interference in which I myself wouldn't have called, Pikeville would have had one more in the history books. And honestly, if the Belfy alum would have known how bad things were to come in the next decade we probably would have just give it to ya to show what good ole' holler boys will do for their big city brethren...Confusedhh:

Bottom line BELFRY 7 - Pikeville 6

02 Russell vs Breathitt
00 Russell vs Lex. Cath.

Both terrific OT games, Russell lost both but they were still 2 of the best games Ive ever seen played, played by probably the 2 best teams Russell has ever put on the field.
