Boone County head coach Rick Thompson credits the tactical blocking and running of Scott Countyâs Wing-T offense for getting defenders to do too much instead of doing their job.
Thatâs one explanation for Scott Countyâs 30-14 run-fueled victory at Boone County Friday night.
Boone County, No. 6 in the state AP Class 6A rankings, was forced to play catchup all night, and every Rebel touchdown was answered by the No. 8 Cardinals.
The Rebels struggled to stop the run on defense. On offense, they botched several center-quarterback exchanges and failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
âThat should be a given,â Thompson said of the quarterback snap. âTonight it wasnât.â
Boone County quarterback Nate Alford had an uneven night, passing for one touchdown and running for another. He threw two interceptions and caught one on defense.
âI just had to settle down and keep my head,â the senior quarterback said.
Owen Hauck Stadium fell silent when Marcus Hill picked off Alfordâs pass halfway through the third quarter. Hill returned the interception to Boone Countyâs 16 yard line, and Scott County seemed poised to add to its 21-7 lead.
But Alford made up for the mistake two plays later by intercepting a pass by Cardinal quaterback Tevin Buffin. Alford finished the Rebel drive with a 41-yard run on a naked bootleg.
Boone County could have tied the game in a bizarre five-down sequence that closed out the first half. The Rebels marched the ball on a dozen plays to the Cardinal 11 for a fresh set of downs. The ball was snapped over Alfordâs head on consecutive plays for losses of 24 and 14 yards.
Boone County recovered most of the yardage on a third-down screen pass to Charles Quainoo. A facemask penalty advanced the ball to the Cardinal 9 yard line.
With the scoreboard incorrectly indicating third down, Boone County threw an incomplete pass. The Rebels came up empty-handed on the subsequent extra play, when a 26-yard field-goal attempt sailed right.
The rest of the first half was not as dramatic. Scott County kept things simple, doing damage with a ground attack. Brooks Barber got most of the work on interior runs, and Walls and Hill complemented with outside sweeps.
Barber, a 5-10, 205-pound senior running back, punished the heart of the Rebel defense. Barber ran for 96 first-quarter yards on five rushes, including a base play up the middle that he busted for 51 yards.
Scott County rushed for 380 total yards.
âWhen you run for the number of yards that we did, you have everyone doing their assignment,â said Cardinals coach Jim McKee.

The Cardinals scored the first touchdown of the game on a seven-play drive in the first quarter, capped by a 38-yard run by Barber.
Scott Countyâs success with inside handoffs to Barber loosened up the Boone County defense on the perimeter and set up the Cardinalsâ second score. Buffin faked to Barber on a bootleg and floated a 20-yard pass to Danny Arnold to give Scott a two-touchdown lead with two minutes left in the first quarter.
The Rebels cut the Scott County lead in half in the second quarter. Running back Jordan Oppenheimer found a seam in the middle of the Cardinals secondary on a pass from Alford and ran for a 28-yard score.
