This Russell team is not as strong as the past teams they have had the last two years, but they are Russell. The front line is still a work in progress but they should be getting better after three weeks of playing. They have a better secondary than last year imo.. The linebackers are solid. This Russell team is not really all that fast. They do have a couple of players that can run but over all not that fast. Boyd County needs to play smart and protect the ball when they have it. Keep it in the hands of the qb and Bryant and this should be a good ball game.

I wonder if the Ironton fans complain about Lutz running the same plays for the last 2 milleniums. Bottom line is you got all these teams running around here running the spread offense.....sure it's fun to watch but, who are the only two teams to win anything around here? Russell and Ironton with their stupid play calling that's who. Oh yeah.....The Evils roll in this one.

Russell wins this one.

This senior class when they were 8th grade & freshman had 24 players on it. What has happened cause they are down to 12 senior players. Most of these players were lineman also.
Wing - T isn't very complicated....8-22 9-23 8-26 9-27 etc..depending on what direction your going left or right...the motion in the backfield is the same...and the blocking assingments are consistent with the steps...most kids pick it up fairly easy during their freshman year....actually most know it before they even get their back during the JFL days...Ivan sends players in with the play most of the time...so they don't have to be looking to the sideline to HEAR him...The freshman class usually is bigger compared to when they become seniors b/c there is more playing time on the freshman team...as they get older...that whole class won't be starting as Seniors...there will be Juniors and Soph. taking those positions as well...so unfortunately some kids quit and don't stick with it....it's like that with most of the schools in the area...if it weren't we'd be seeing things like they were in the 70s and 80s when there was 70 players on a team...now 45 - 50 is big number for teams around here.

Ironton is in a different class of football. Ironton is the true power house in the Tri-State. Yes Russell has had a good run, and are good for the 3A schools in Kentucky.
That being said, everyone has down years. Russell is use to winning and it is hard for this group and fan base of the last 5 years or so to get use to. Russell certainly has many good athletes and are very capable of winning a lot of ball games.
Yes the play calling at times make no sense!
Russell and Ironton are not the only teams around here to win anything!
I wish the Devils lots of luck, but if something doesn't change that is exactly what they are going to need is luck.

Very much ashame, when they had the crap that went on last year and no coach stood up and did anything about it!

It was more than one lil word...it was a flurry of words.....and it was not something coaches wanted to do, but you can't put up with that when your the Coach or you'll lose control of the whole team....you can't let kids talk to you in that manner..i don't care who you are or how good you are...kids have to respect whether they like the coach or not or the team will suffer
09-17-2009, 08:24 PM
It was a lot more than one word and the kid quit the team for the second time this season. He wasn't allowed to rejoin the team. He wasn't kicked off. Why do people keep bringing up something that happened and is OVER???

It seems at times we go over and over the same old stuff year after year. McGloan and the coaching staff call the wrong plays. McGloan calls a play and the players have no idea what he is calling. What are we trying to say? The coaches have all lost thier minds and have no idea what the plays are.
Horse crap. These are coaches that took Russell to the state chamionship game two consecutive years are the same coaches that made Russell a school that has earned respect on the field. It was not so long ago that signs appeared around Flatwoods and Russel that said "Ivan for President". How soon we forget. I'm tired of hearing the crying and whinning about play calling. Ivan is here, he is not going away because of a few disgruntled fans. We have a hall of fame coach. How many other teams can say that? Not many.
Just maybe we don't have the talent that we have been blessed with the past 10 years. We have been blessed. How fast some forget.

I think that is great how everyone backs the coaching staff no matter what the situation is.

It's not that EVERYONE backs the coaching staff no matter what...its hard to argue with what that coaching staff has done over the last 10 years and what Ivan has done over the last 30 years...the record speaks for itself....the team isn't as good as they've been in the past and i really think most people knew that going into this season....if there's legit gripes that's different, but there really isn't other than Russell just isn't that good this year..they aren't going to be able to do what they've done....its just how it goes...it cycles and it will come back..and they will probably still win 6 or 7 games this year even though they are down...
I gotta say though Boyd County gives Russell a game even when they are terrible....and it looks like Boyd is terrible this eyar so look out :devilflam

I was told this was Russell's weakest team in over 20 years.
Russell fans, is that a correct statement or an exaggeration? Tough to compare weaker teams when you have state champions to be compared to.

I wouldn't say that this is the weakest team, maybe one of the smallest, they just don't have the size of teams of the past, BUT what they do have is HEART. If any team was the weakest I would have to say last years team was weaker just because there was NO leadership on that team. But yes going into this year everybody knew that this team was going to have it rough, but so far from what I have seen this team is taking it in stride and will prevail no matter what their record will end up.

Amen.
We don't support the coaches blindly. We support them for good reason. They have proven over and over again that they can not only win, but win on the biggest stage, given the right group of players. During the last decade, they had quite a few teams who had quite a few players who really dedicated themselves to the weights. If a few of the underclassmen realize it takes a year round commitment to get bigger, stronger, and faster, then Russell will be right back to competing for state championships again. If not, then they'll still be above .500 because the coaching staff is top notch.

Can u explain the difference please ^...wasn't allowed to rejoin, not kicked off----gimme a break.. The funniest thing is nothing happened to the parent or the coach who both acted much worse.

There have been plenty of parents who would speak up but don't this is why & that's the way it is. Good luck Red Devils !
